i think that this is when it's over for me

Summary:

So I'm back on my sad MerDer shit.

Based in season 11 when Derek is in DC.

This will be a 6 part series with pretty short parts based on Kelsea Ballerini's new EP Rolling Up the Welcome Mat (if you haven't heard it, I highly recommend it).

I don't own the song or the show.

Notes:

Song is Mountain With A View, recommend listening while reading!

Work Text:

Meredith sighed as she hung up the phone. She didn’t even know why she tried anymore. She couldn’t remember the last time he picked up outside of the scheduled calls he had with Zola. She stood up and walked out to the deck. Sitting down on the swingset he had built for the two of them, she looked down at the empty space next to her.

He was supposed to be here. He had promised Zola months ago that he would be here. He had brought the redeye flight and everything. But when she texted him to find out if he wanted her to pick him up from the airport he had replied and said he had an important deadline that he couldn’t miss. She didn’t think she had hated anyone more than the president in that moment.

Because It was her that had to deal with the fallout from Zola. It was her that had to convince Zola to still go up onto that stage and dance her little heart out. It was her friends that had taken Derek’s place in cheering her on. All for him to only reply with a thumbs up to the video she sent him.

She heard tyres crunching the gravel down the driveway and she looked up hopeful, maybe he had realized how much he had fucked up, maybe he was here. Her heart sank when Alex’s car came into view. He got out and jogged over to her.

“Have you heard anything?” He asked her, the expression on his face doubtful.

Meredith just shook her head, knowing if she tried to talk the tears would come.

Alex sighed and sat down next to her, putting his arm around her shoulder and pulling her close. She didn’t know how long they sat there, it took her awhile to build up the courage to say what she was thinking.

“I think that this is when it’s over for me.”

Kudos are very much appreciated and please let me know what you think!
