"So, was I right or what?" Kevin exited the movie theater and stepped out into the mall, with Gwen by his side.
The girl adjusted her—or more accurately, Kevin's—jacket, trying to better keep herself warm. This particular mall was always too cold for her comfort. "Yeah, okay, that movie wasn't completely terrible. I give it six points out of 10."
"C'mon, it's at least a seven!" Kevin whined. He had spent days trying to convince Gwen to see the latest action blockbuster with him. He even splurged on getting them the best seats. He didn't want her to think it was a waste of money.
She stuck her tongue out at him in jest. "6.5, take it or leave it."
Accepting that she likely wasn't going to change her mind, Kevin tilted his head in acknowledgement. "I'll take it."
"I'm glad we got to spend time together, though." She latched onto him, putting an arm around his arm as they walked. "Thanks for taking me out."
"No probl—" Kevin stopped in his tracks outside a clothes store, the obnoxious "SALE" sign catching his attention. "Hey, look, they're havin' a sale."
Gwen couldn't believe her eyes. Kevin Ethan Levin, the boy who regularly wore the same few clothes for as long as she knew him, was eagerly looking to buy new clothes. Maybe her constant hints finally got into his head. "You wanna go clothes shopping?"
He snorted, then untangled his arm from hers. "Nah, I was thinkin' we could get you a new jacket so you wouldn't have to borrow mine anymore."
She shifted her feet, laughing nervously. "Oh, t—that won't be necessary." If he knew the real reason she was apprehensive, he'd probably think she was weird. It was better to come up with a lie instead. "I spent way too much money today."
"Then don't spend a single extra buck. It'll be my treat." He gave her a subtle, tender smile and walked into the store.
Darn, he was being so nice! The rational part of her wanted to say yes, but she opted to let the sentimental part of her take the wheel. "Babe, you're being very sweet, but it's no big deal." She grabbed him by the arm, yanking him away from the entrance.
A salesperson watched them from inside the store, wishing they would either come in or walk away, instead of loitering. Put off by Gwen's strange behaviour, Kevin's lips curled into a frown. "Alright, what's up with you?"
"Nothing's up," she said defensively, forcing a smile. "Like I said, it's no big deal. We can share, can't we?"
"But if I get you a new jacket, we won't have to sh—" He cut himself short, having figured out the real reason Gwen turned down his offer. "Wait. This wouldn't happen to be one of those weird things that girls do, would it?"
"Well, if it's weird for a girl to want to wear her boyfriend's jacket because it smells like him, then call me weird!" She almost immediately put a hand over her mouth, realizing she had said too much. Heat rushed to her cheeks, giving them a reddish hue.
He chortled. "For real? I thought you woulda wanted a new jacket instead of using mine. It looks way too big on you."
Smiling sheepishly, Gwen removed her hand from her mouth and put her arms around herself. "Maybe, but it's also pretty comfy, it keeps me warm and it has your mana all over it. It's like I'm wearing you." She paused. "Surprisingly, that's not the strangest sentence to come out of my mouth."
"Why didn't you just tell me before?" he wondered.
She shrugged. "I just didn't know how. Honestly, though, if you really want it back—"
Kevin placed a hand on her shoulder reassuringly. "We can share. If it makes you happy, then I'm happy." He took Gwen's hand and led her away from the store.
"So..." She rested her head on his shoulder. "Do you think I'm weird?"
He simply laughed at her question. "Gwen, we have powers. We're both way past weird."
