Burnt Coffee

Summary:

Oikawa finally admits his feelings.

Work Text:

Oikawa’s go-to study spot was a small café not too far from his home. It was always a relaxing environment when he went. In the beginning, Oikawa would go by himself. Eventually, he started dragging Iwaizumi along when he went. Iwa actually did enjoy their routine study sessions at the café, but god forbid he said anything of the sort to Oikawa. Now, on the other hand, Oikawa was very vocal about their study sessions and how much better it is when he had someone to study with. The catch was his comments were always vague and not the full extent of his thoughts. For example, Oikawa forgot to mention how Iwaizumi is the only one he wanted to invite, the café was one of his safe places so it only made sense that he’d invite just Iwa. Or that the playlist the barista would play always reminded him of his best friend if only we were more he’d think but quickly push that thought to the back of his mind. Oikawa would always tell himself I’ll look into that thought another day, but another day comes by and he just goes through the cycle of I’ll look into it, and never actually does. Oikawa finally got some sense knocked into him when he was talking with Matsukawa after volleyball practice, he was complaining about a girl asking for Iwa’s number. At the end of his rant, he mentioned that he doesn’t even know why it bothered him so much. Matsukawa threw a volleyball at the back of his head occupied by a much-needed comment, “it’s because you’re in love with him, you idiot.”

After that day he made a plan to confess his feelings to his childhood best friend, and today was that day. Oikawa’s leg would not stop shaking as he sat across from Iwaizumi, with a blue mug filled with his regular coffee order, sitting on the table untouched, him being too nervous to even take a sip. Iwa glances up from his computer, confused, “what’s up with you? You’re shaking the table.”

Without thinking he blurted his confession, “I love you, Iwa… and not in you’re my best friend kind of way.”

After a long silence, Iwaizumi began to speak, “Tooru… I love you too. But, I don’t see us as anything more than friends… I’m sorry.”

Oikawa lets out a fake laugh to try and mask his disappointment, “no worries, Iwa. I’m realizing now after saying it out loud, it would be too weird for us to ever be a thing.” It looked as if Iwaizumi was going to say something but decided against it. The two silently went back to working on their computers. It begins to dawn on Oikawa that his safe place isn’t feeling relaxing anymore, and the normal playlist starts sounding bitter, Oikawa finally takes a sip out of the blue mug only to realize his favorite coffee was tasting unusually burnt.
