Work Text:

skye and yoru had a lot of close calls in their relationship. like that time they had to sneak past cypher to the teleporter to go on a late-night date. or on missions when someone would radio to ask where they were, not knowing they were locking lips in a corner somewhere. or that time skye told astra to come in early in the morning forgetting yoru was lying next to her. she had seconds to kick yoru off the bed, out of sight from her. they were fond memories they shared together. always followed by a giggle or smile. however, this was their closest call yet.

“don’t fall asleep,” skye whispered as she held yoru in her arms. it was horrible, yoru was covered in blood, other's and his own, wet and dry. the blood also spread to skye, her hands and lap covered in it. if someone were to see her, they’d think she was also injured. despite all the mess she held him tight and rubbed her thumb over his cheek.

“you’re gonna be okay,” she wished, her eyes flickered between his face and his chest, watching it closely to see it rise and fall. his breathing was the only thing keeping her from losing all her shit.

she thought to only a few minutes ago when yoru and her stood here. they were both tired and covered in filth, this mission just seemed to keep on going. yoru noticed how tired skye was and said he’d clear site. skye refused but yoru argued. they settled with yoru leaving a teleport by skye, “i can teleport out if it gets too much,” he reassured, skye should have not let him go. minutes later when he gatecrashed out of site he collapsed right into skye’s arms. bleeding.

“i love you, kirra,” yoru whispered,

“don’t say stuff like that,” skye said, her voice almost breaking, “sage will get here soon,”

“say it back,” yoru said, bringing his hand close to skye’s. she instantly held it tight so he didn’t have to exert his energy. if skye spoke again she was surely going to start bawling so she squeezed his hand with a silent reply.

it made skye think back to when she first said “i love you” to him. he said it first and had been saying it for weeks, but skye was too shy to say it back until he demanded she do so. the memory was warm and she tried surrounding herself in it. she hoped yoru was also thinking about memories that kept him warm.

however, the cold ripped through her memory with the static of radio, breaking her delusions, “skye, how’s yoru doing!?” sage breathlessly asked through it,

“he’s okay,” skye lied, yoru squeezed her hand, asking her to stop lying, “please get here soon,” she added,

“the other attackers are still here,” sage replied, “i will be there as soon as i can!” her reply was drowned out by gunfire before cutting out.

skye’s healing did little to improve his condition and sage was her last hope. she didn’t want it to come to resurrection. it was barely ever used because of the risk. it can change people, alter personalities and memories, sometimes they become new people. skye didn’t want yoru to change.

“ryo,” she called again, stroking his cheek, “you’re still here right?”

with the little energy yoru had, he opened his eyes and blankly said, “say it back,”

“no,” skye said, “you’re going to be fine,” she repeated. she was in denial, this would not be their final goodbye.

“kirra,” he begged, looking at her through his hazy eyes. he could feel it, he could feel the world caving in. he didn’t want to die alone, he didn’t want to die unloved, he needed to hear her, “please,”

they shared a look of endearment, “i love you so much,” skye said, her voice shaking. she had been holding back tears this whole time but against her will they began running down her cheeks.

yoru softly smiled and reached his hand to her face, skye supported him by his wrist. once his hand was on skye’s face he gestured her downwards. skye followed him, leaning over and kissing him. their lips made contact and lingered, trying to live in the moment forever. skye pulled away only hovering inches above him, looking right into his brown eyes.

she softly smiled through her grief and he smiled back. then his eyes fluttered shut and his hand went slack. skye held his hand against her face, “ryo?” she called,

“ryo,” she called again and again, each one louder and more desperate. the slow tears turned into a rushing river. she kept saying things to him, begging, pleading for him to wake up.

she dropped his hand and wrapped her arms tightly around him, cradling him as closely as she could, “i love you, i love you, i love you,” she repeated softly. in the back of her head, she realised she couldn’t feel his chest rise and fall. he was dead.

she didn’t know how long she sat there crying before she heard her name being yelled. she turned to the sound of the voice and saw sage running toward her.

“sage!” skye yelled back, sage rushed over practically sliding on her knees to get to them,

“heal him!” skye said between sobs, “b-before he—”

“i’m so sorry, skye,” sage said putting one of her hands on skye’s, “i’m so sorry,” she repeated. sage brought her other hand to slide under yoru’s jacket, above his heart. it didn’t take her long to confirm her suspicion, “skye, i need to resurrect him,”

skye let more tears flow at sage’s words, resurrect. she wasn’t even thinking anymore, just crying.

sage took the lead, opening up her hands and summoning her jade. she closed her eyes as she stood and swirled her hands around in the air, “your duty is not over!” she yelled her hands shooting up,

yoru’s body was lifted from skye’s lap and into the air, a light blue, almost green, glow was shining from him. with the sound of a crystal cracking, yoru’s feet were back on the ground and he was alive.

on autopilot, yoru reached for his gun and aimed it at nothing in particular before being interrupted by skye crying his name.

“ryo!” skye cried, grabbing the bottom of yoru’s jacket and pulling him downwards,

“skye?” he asked, dropping his gun and kneeling to follow her pull. glanced at sage unsure what to do but she didn’t say anything. he looked back at skye, “what’s wrong?” he asked, she was covered in so much blood,

skye sobbed harder when he heard him call her skye and not kirra. had he forgotten her? she could only look down at the ground and grip his jacket even tighter. yoru scanned her body with his eyes, she looked like a mess. she was covered in blood and her hair was messy. he repeatedly brushed her hair back, it was so unruly and messy it was hard to keep out of her face. with his hands on the sides of her face (effectively keeping her hair back) he tilted her head up forcing her to finally face him. they looked into each other's eyes before skye sobbed and brought her hands to her eyes.

“i had to resurrect you,” sage butted in, yoru turned to her and then back to skye, the situation finally making sense,

“kirra,” yoru replied, brushing more hair out of her face, “i’m fine,” skye moved her hands down to peek at yoru. he hated seeing her cry, skye never cried so when she did it was heartbreaking. he grabbed one of her wrists and brought it to his chest, “i’m alive,” skye stopped sobbing for a second to feel yoru’s heartbeat.

“you know who i am?” skye asked between sobs,

“of course, i do,” he replied,

“w-who am i?” she asked still crying,

“kirra,” he replied, he was weary about his words, sage doesn’t know they’re dating,

they stared at each other, skye couldn’t tell what yoru was thinking. did he or did he not love her? either way all skye wanted was him, she pounced at him. wrapping her arms around his neck and tightly squeezing him. yoru was surprised but followed suit, wrapping his arms around her neck. he stroked her hair slowly and listened to her cry into his ear.

“i love you,” skye said softly, quiet enough that only he could hear it, her voice cracking a little. yoru thought that skye knew how much he loved her so he just continued to stroke her hair before skye pulled away. once again face to face skye said, “say it back,”

yoru could only stare at how beautiful she was, even so dishevelled. the way her bright green eyes were glassy and puffy from crying, the way there was blood splattered across her star-like freckles. he just could not say i love you back, no words could describe his love for her.

the hand on the back of skye’s head pushed her forward until yoru had pulled her into a deep kiss. it was brief and when their lips parted they leaned close so their foreheads were touching, “i love you, kirra,” skye giggled through tears and kissed him again before turning to sage.

“we need to get back to the protocol,” sage said, “yoru needs to be assessed,”

Notes:

in my brain, sage knows that they’re together because skye told her. but yoru doesn’t know that sage knows. :)
