You didn’t expect it to go this way, but you were always prepared. You protected and made sure he was safe at all times. When he spoke he was nervous, afraid. It was difficult to put him at ease while in the mines, but once the two of you were out it was like he could breathe again. He was visibly shaken in front of you, and it wasn’t just for the cold.
Amit’s arms were tucked into his sleeves and wrapped around his chest, his chin pushing against the collar of his shirt. You could see Logdok over his shoulder, making his way over to you as Amit stuttered out about leaving. Gently, you held up your hand, shaking your head.
“Please. Let’s get you stable before we move on. I will be back in a moment” you walked past him, touching his shoulder before stopping to speak to the goblin.
His eyes stayed on you for what felt like forever. The way he could completely recognize you from just the back of your head now was new to him. The entire time in the mines he memorized your voice, your face, the way you changed when danger came into play. You were like a dragon, protecting and defending him. At first, he was trying to calm himself and found you to be grounding. In that short time, he had realized the feelings he had shoved down to pay attention to his studies.
Amit felt a shiver go down his body from a gust of cold wind, the ghost of your touch on his shoulder now gone. He finally lowered his eyes away from you, throwing his hood over his head and tucking his hands back under his arms to shield them from the cold. It only took a few more moments before you were back in his line of sight, and he relaxed. You seemed to notice, and smiled at him. The way your nose crinkled just a little made his heart skip a beat.
“There’s a camp not far from here. I cleared it on the way in, we should be fine.” The way you spoke was so confident and matter-of-fact it was reassuring. It was nice to have someone tell him what to do. To not have to think for once, to just follow. Amit nodded, a half smile on his face as he followed after you.
“Thank you for helping me, Amit.”
“Of course,” he started, feeling his voice catch in his throat, “I wasn’t much help though.” He chuckled softly, finally feeling the wind calm down enough so his hood could be put back down. You looked back at him, a tender look dancing in your eyes, giving a soft chuckle in response. He wanted more, more of your soft glances and smiles, your touches. Amit felt his mind wandering into deeper thoughts, one’s he didn’t often visit. He couldn’t help but want to feel your hands on his chest, or your soft lips on his. You had to be a good kisser, after all your lips looked like pillows-
“Amit?”
Your voice pulled him away from the depths of his thoughts, giving a slight shake of his head he glanced up at you. He had been in his thoughts for so long that he didn’t know you had left him out towards the path. You were by the tent, patiently waiting for him.
“Are you alright?” you started towards him, your nose and cheeks red from the cold, your hair had fallen down from your normal updo. You looked like an angel.
“Erm, yes, I’m alright. Apologies.” He mumbled out before he followed you into a tent that had a fire in the middle. He sat down on a cot, watching as you lit the fire before him. There was a silence that fell over the tent as the sun slowly started to set outside. Amit was watching you, your hands held towards the fire, a slight shake in them. It was then that he slowly started to take in the damage you had taken from the goblins in the mine. You had marks on your face that were slowly healing from your Wiggenweld potion, but you still had the dark under eyes that never seemed to go away.
There was dirt under your nails, not to mention goblin blood mixed with the grime on your robes. He looked down at his own robes, which were just dirty. No stains or anything on them. No dirty nails, no cuts or bruises. How could you have thanked him, when he did nothing but read pieces of paper? Amit flexed his hands, the warmth finally returning to him, and a sense of guilt washing over him.
“I’m truly sorry I wasn’t any help. Maybe next time you should ask your friend Sebastian?” his voice was low, speaking slowly as if he didn’t know how to express his emotions. “Poppy would even be a better comrade” he gave a forced laugh, his eyes moving back to look at you.
You were stiff, hunched over slightly, your hair covering your face. The sunlight was peeking in, and hitting your hair that was glistening with the melting snow. It was once again quiet, and he suddenly felt the guilt weighing him him down. He really was just a weak link, wasn’t he? He couldn’t do anything right unless it was about schoolwork. Amit stood up, his eyes staying on the ground, feeling himself shake a little as he held back the stinging in his eyes.
He felt a warmth grab his fist, prying open his hand to interlace his fingers. You had stood in the same moment he had, and grabbed him with such force he thought his hand was going to break.
“Don’t you ever say that. Ever.”
Amit met your eyes, staring daggers into him, her own eyes welling up. His chest felt tight, he took a deep breath, feeling a tear threatening to fall. You lessened you grip on his hand finally, and then broke eye contact to look outside the flap to see the sun had finally disappeared. You pulled him out of the tent, leaving the warmth of the tent to make the trek back to the nearest Floo Powder location.
“I wanted you to be with me, in there. In the mine,” you spoke sternly, continuing to drag him along, “I wouldn’t want anyone else by my side.” It was quiet for a few more beats, only hearing the crunch of the snow beneath your feet. He gave your hand a squeeze, a small thank you for the reassurance as he wiped the tears away from his face. You saw him as useful. You didn’t have a doubt in your mind about his abilities, and sought him out. No one else.
“Thank you” he whispered, just barely loud enough for you to hear. But you were close to him, so of course you heard him. You glanced out of the corner of your eye, smiling your normal nose crinkling smile at him.
Oh he would do anything to see that smile. Even if it meant more goblins and mines.
