Rachel landed on a roof, not far from a young boy in a colourful monstrosity of a costume. She swiftly stalked toward her friend.
“We don’t have time for this, Blue Jay. Yes, I know who you are. No, I haven’t told anyone. I need you to take this.” Rachel thrust a necklace into his hands and wrapped his fingers around it.
“Keep it on you at all times. Don’t tell anyone you have it, if someone finds out say you inherited it. As far as they’re concerned, we never met. You never met Rachel Cliff.” Rachel turned on her heel and leapt off the roof, letting her wings take her away from the boy she considered family. She had to put as much distance as possible between them before they caught up to her.
Rachel heard the sound of something whistling through the air seconds before it hit her, pinning her wings to her body crookedly and sending electricity through her body.
The last thing she felt was her wings being cut into by the net as she fell.
The last thing she saw was the ground rapidly getting closer.
The last thing she said was a spell to bind her amulet and its magic to her soul so it could not be taken.
The last thing she thought was a prayer that her frère would be safe.
