Ves yelped and staggered when Ciri jumped onto her back and wrapped her legs around her middle. Bubbling laughter was in her ear, and Ves’ hands went to Ciri’s thighs automatically to hold the weight dragging her down.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m tired of walking,” Ciri said, resting her chin on Ves’ shoulder to see in front of her. They were in the outskirts of Vizima, on a dusty road that was empty except for them. “Carry me.”
“What, and you think I won’t get tired of walking with your entire weight on me?” Strands of white hair ghosted around Ves’ face, fading in and out of her peripheral vision.
“I’ll give you a kiss if you do.” For emphasis, Ciri pecked Ves’ cheek.
Ves hummed, feigning contemplation. She adjusted her grip on Ciri’s thighs and hoisted her up further on her back, earning a giggle. “Three kisses.”
“Two.”
“You want to negotiate to kiss me less?”
“I want to negotiate for the sake of negotiating.”
Ves huffed. “Alright, fine. Two kisses. And you buy me dinner at The New Narakort tonight.”
“What? No, that wasn’t part of the deal!”
“I’ll drop you.”
“No!” Ciri’s arms clamped around Ves’ shoulders as if her life depended on it. She laughed and buried her face in the crook of Ves’ neck.
“Alright. Two kisses and dinner.”
Huffing, Ves trudged on down the road and came to terms with the fact her arms would be aching by the time they reached Vizima.
