Chapter 1: Destiny in the Works

Summary:

Day 1: Destiny

A moment on Toyland.

Chapter Text

Serafina swings her leg over the fence, carefully balancing two milkshakes in her hands. Cedar is hunched over in the distance, nearly completely concealed by the strange paper statue she’s been building for the past month. She swings her other leg over the fence, and makes her way over.

“Yo! Break time, cagna. The point of Toyland is for you to be-”

“-all play, no work, I know. I just want to get it done.” Cedar tries to push her hair out of her face, and looks up with a grin. “Where’ve you been all day?”

Serafina hands Cedar her milkshake, and leans against the bench. Their bench, with Cedar’s art supplies cluttered around it, and blankets attempting to spill off of it.

“The billiard room.”

“I’m guessing you didn’t win.”

“Nope! Punched Orwin in the face, though.”

Why ? He just gets worse every time you fight him.”

“You would get it if you tried. His face is hilarious .” Cedar hums, taking a sip of her milkshake.

“Cookie dough?” Serfina nods, smiling with the straw in her mouth. “Nice. You say it’s funny every time . I just think you like watching him bleed at this point.”

“That too.”

Cedar rolls her eyes, taking a seat, and propping her feet up. “What else did you do all day?”

“That’s it.” Cedar taps her cheek, just under her right eye, and cocks her head with a knowing grin. “Al diavolo quella maledizione della verità.”

“Were you spying on the boats again?”

“What are they even shipping out here?”

Cedar frowns, sitting up. “Sera, you know what they’re shipping.”

Serafina swallows, trying to not drop her smile. “I mean what else .” She grips the chain around her neck. “People have to be suspicious-”

“That doesn’t mean they’ll do anything about it. It’s basically a fact of out world at this point, why would they bother disturbing it.” Cedar puts down her cup, and stares up at the sky. Serafina scoffs, allowing the two of them to sit in silence until-

“I wish you hadn’t come with me.”

“It’s our destiny, Wood. We both signed knowing what would happen. I signed knowing what it meant.”

“Still.” Serafina finishes her milkshake, and sits down.

“Hey.” She takes off her necklace and grabs Cedar’s hand. “I don’t regret signing.”

“You’re going to d- I don’t want you to be a donkey forever.”

“Then find me, and get one of your magic friends to change me back. Easy Peasy.” Serafina opens Cedar’s hand, and pours the chain into her palm.

“Nobody’s ever done that before, I dunno if-”

“You can.” Cedar’s hand closes around the necklace, and Serafina smiles. “I believe in you.”

Cedar closes her eyes, and nods. “Okay.”

Serafina stands as Cedar puts on the necklace. “Let’s go do something fun, eh? Got a bit too boring there.”

Cedar doesn’t laugh, but she does stand, grabbing her milkshake as she goes. “Race you to the Ferris Wheel?”

“You’re on.”

They both know that Serafina is going to win, of course. And that she’ll wait at the end of the line for Cedar to catch up, like she usually does.
