Work Text:

Despite the many hurdles cooking had ensured for Gregor, he had managed to find his way around it, supplying sinners and staff alike with the necessary nutrients for the day. However, he could never quite say he enjoyed it, as it was a chore to him nonetheless.

Rodya appeared to have noticed, always keeping an eye on Gregor. She would often even find herself assisting him in the kitchen, albeit only a little. It was quite the sight to watch a (one-sided) quarrel break out between the two in the process of chopping vegetables, or boiling potatoes, though it was nothing too out of the ordinary.

What could be considered out of the ordinary was Rodya’s idea to reserve the kitchen for herself one afternoon. The sinners could not guess what for, Dante was not even willing to question her motives or the quality of the meal that would come out of the situation. Afraid of her culinary skills, most opted for other snacks, while others ignored the fridge overall, Gregor included. He could not fathom what his so-called “partner” could’ve prepared, had she not claimed to be making sweets, he would have had hopes of it being edible — she could often be spotted around him in the kitchen, surely she had picked up on something.

As night fell upon the land, Gregor got to sleep. After a while of rather uncomfortable sleep, he opened his eyes, and stared at the roof, before deciding to go outside and take some fresh air. He used to find the starry night relaxing, it having the magical ability to distract him from his sorrows, offering the comfort of a warm embrace he felt that he was missing all his life. Instead, this time, he discovered that the scents from the nearby cities fueled his hunger, and there was nothing the moon and stars could do to make his stomach put an end to its complaints.

So he went back inside, heading towards the kitchen area in search of anything edible. He hated to admit that his curiosity for Rodya’s supposed sweets had not died down, and he figured that even they could fill his stomach. Taking out the container and removing the lid he prepared himself for what he would come across, only to find dozens of…truffle-like sweets, covered in cocoa. Consuming them proved to not be a difficult task, either, as the taste of cake, paired with condensed milk and vodka was quite mouth-watering.

Content with his meal, Gregor made his way back to the so-called “beds”, choosing to ignore the empty container he placed back inside the fridge. Unsurprisingly, the lack of content within it had gone unnoticed by the rest as well, everyone still ignoring its existence altogether.

Until he himself awoke and, having mostly forgotten about the last night, searching for the Russian lady’s treats.

“My, my, darling, I didn’t know you appreciate my cooking that much!”, an annoying voice.
“I don’t”, a sharp response.
“How come the container’s empty then, hm~?” oh how he despised that tone.
“Huh. Must’ve been someone else?” Gregor’s attempt at covering it up was nothing short of fruitless.
“Mhm, but of course.” Rodya got up from her seat, brushing past Gregor, “you can let me know if you’d like some more”, she smiled walking away, watching him over her shoulder.
Gregor stood still, a red tint visible on his face. He closed the container and put it in the sink. He would deal with it later.
