House Always Wins: Jorge returns for vengeance and manages to trick Esteban and Doña out of their jobs with his various means of blackmail and bets. You and what army?: Captain Sandoval is forced to take a leave of absence when he injured his back and he goes to Doña Montaña in order to learn how to relax. Maybe even dabble in some comedy. It doesn’t pan out. But Shuriki’s old enemy from the Northern Isles has come back to strike Avalor when it’s at its most vulnerable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now back to present day Avalor. These doppelgängers are actually identical twins and polar opposites to the Los Cuatros Amigos plus Isabel. They are also ghosts. That’s right. When Elena goes back to the spirit world with Zuzo and Amaláy, she meets their doppelgängers and predecessors. Who all want a second chance at life and try to possess them.
Elena Castillo-Flores vs Itzal Malezas*
*Name opposites Bright, shining light Castle-Flowers vs Shadow Weed
While Elena is the beloved queen of her kingdom, Itzal was the princess of old Maru who let her anxieties of being Queen go to her head and she went mad, obsessed with using keeping her magic to herself than help her peoples.
Voice Actress: Emeraude Toubia
Isabel Castillo-Flores vs Isadora Castillon
Isadora was not the younger princess as Isabel is, but she was a renowned inventor to the princess. However her quest for knowledge does not come from a wish to bring help to her kingdom, but just to further her own prestige and even steals her ideas from her assistants.
Voice Actress: Isabella Gomez
Mateo de Alva vs Marco Asa*
*I thought this would be a fun note to how the EoA team wanted to originally call Mateo, Marco and the fact that Carla confuses their names. Plus it means “Warlike,” the total opposite of Mateo’s personality. The last name mean “Doctor/Healer” referencing his use of magic.
Marco Asa was the royal wizard to Itzel in Ancient Maru, before Amaláy’s turn. Unlike Mateo’s loyalty and support of Elena, Marco helped feed Itzel’s insecurities, like saying Itzel’s impulsive decisions would lead to her ruin and that she should only listen to his advice. From then on, acting like King of Avalor through puppet rule.
Voice Actor: Alberto Rosendes
Gabe Nuñez vs Azreal Guapo*
*Since Gabriel is an archangel, I used the “Archangel of Death,” Azreal as Gabe’s doppelgänger’s name. Plus I thought it would be fun if his doppelgänger was the great El Guapo)
Since we have all seen El Guapo in action, we know that he is unbelievably arrogant and proud of himself. His command during battle was subpar compared to Gabe. He delegated his tasks and took all the glory from his troops.
Voice Actor: David DeSantos
Naomi Turner vs Amara Roundhouse*
*Name opposites Naomi means “pleasantness” and Amara is “bitterness”
Amara was the dock captain of Avalor and very bitter about it too. She believed she was destined for greater things but when she pleaded to be given a position on the Grand Council she was refused for being a foreigner (combination of Marco’s influence and Itzel’s fear of foreigners invading Avalor) and since then has lived almost a life of a hermit.
Voice Actress: Emily Osmet
I picture this as a two parter episode like a special of sorts. Part one would be titled, Who are you? This would be where Elena and co. meet their doppelgängers and find out about the doppelgängers’ downfall. At the same time, Esteban and co. have a freaky friday moment when they switch with their doppelgängers. Esteban is at the monestary for the third time, and being alone with his guilty, guilty thoughts is worse than ever.
Sandoval’s jokes are still not good.
Doña comes up with increasingly thin excuses to procrastinate the murder she’s been hired for. Armando is in jail and Prof. Mendoza really can’t speak French. Basically the adults still have their flaws and don’t seem to really change as overtly as the teens do.
Part two is Who you are: In the spirit world, Elena must deal with her insecurities about the prophecy of darkness, her PTSD concerning Shuriki and her increasing anxiety about potential threats like the Delgados.
Mateo faces his great ambition again when it comes to living up to Alacazar and proving himself worthy and confirmation to himself that he will not do to Elena what Marco did to Itzel.
Naomi has to deal with her ambition, her pride and her stubbornness when it comes to being wronged (Tides of Change for example) and not let her need to be validated by others (like with impressing the parents or in her case royals.
Gabe acknowledges that his machoismo is not at all healthy nor a productive way to live life or lead an army and that he should express his feelings more rather than hide behind a tough guy mask.
Isabel remembers the need for knowledge in order to improve the world and while it is all nice and good to be honored for her achievements, that should not overshadow why she loves science and why she does science.
Well that is basically the gist of all my thoughts. Hope y’all enjoyed the mess that comes with doppelgängers and facing your own flaws through another person.
Also a few scenes (ish) I thought of between Checho (Esteban’s doppelgänger, former priest, amateur therapist) and others during Shuriki era.
I haven’t written full scenes or anything but you can probably tell whose who by Chencho being the one giving the advice, and you can probably guess, only sweet Armando took his words to heart... (Aug 5 2019)
Esteban and Chencho
“You may dismiss this as a cliche but something I have always agreed with is the truth does set you free.”
“It may. But in this case justice is much more important than truth. And for justice to prevail I deserve to be punished. I must bear this alone.”
“You cannot only think of yourself and what you do or do not deserve. What about what the others deserve. They love you, and deceiving them from the truth will only hurt them.”
“No, it’s not. It would break their hearts if they know the truth.”
“Break their hearts? Or yours?”
“Yes, I mean no. It’s both. The answer is both. You just don’t understand the heinous crime I did. It is beyond forgiveness.”
“Forgiveness is a great power, from what you have told me. I believe they could find it in themselves-“
“Well they’re not here, are they? They’re dead or trapped. And it is up to me to fix what I have done and bear my burden. Without anyone else.”
“If you’re so committed to fixing what you have done, then tell someone what you did and that way you can truly repair the damage.”
“I cannot do that.”
“You always have options.”
“Not anymore.”
“You did have an option back then that led to this “crime” you speak of. It’s up to you if you’re going to let that choice influence all your future choices from now on. I will leave you with this. The truth will always let out, only you can decide to be the one to do the final blow or someone else will do it for you.”
Doña and Chencho
“No, I mean yes, we usually fight but this. This is the he might not forgive me and he thinks I’m a horrible person. And it’s awful.”
“Why do you care if he thinks that-“
“Because he’s such a good person and I, for some explicable reason care what he thinks. And now, he might never speak to me. I mean speak to me only in professional settings and that’s awful, and I hate that I care about him. It hurts so much.”
“But it’s good to care about someone else, Love is one of the fruits of life. It means they have done something to impact your life. That they matter.”
“And what happens when it is unequal? That you mean nothing to the other person. It’s ugly.”
“You should talk to him.”
“I have a reputation.”
“Does that matter so much? He would trust you more- If you want him to think you’re not an awful person then you should allow him to see beyond your walls.”
“No. I refuse. You don’t know Esteban. Looks are the first things he sees, and criticizes. I can’t go looking like this, I look so so-“
“His response may surprise you. You know, vulnerable Doña is much prettier than the ice queen.”
“No it’s not. Me being vulnerable..that’s an idiot whose wailing hurts people’s ears. Besides being vulnerable doesn’t give you options, ice queen on the other hand...everyone wants the ice queen.”
“But they do not love her, and isn’t love what you want?”
“I don’t lo—No. No more emotions. Ice queen is all you get. Alluring, sophisticated, practical. Yes, practical. That’s an upside, don’t you agree? Vulnerabilities make you too trusting and hopeful and breakable.”
“Yet ice is also breakable. With love, someone will be there when you break.”
Armando and Chencho
“I don’t know if I can. My Armando touch will just ruin everything.”
“Never underestimate yourself. At the end of the day, one small ripple can make a wave.”
“What does that mean?”
“Uh to simplify it, you can make a difference, and even if you don’t, it matters to you. You must stand up for what you believe in, you owe it to yourself and your conscience.”
