Chapter 1: The guardian's mistake
Chapter Text
This part is narrated by the Multiverse Guardian
"Go Anne and live your life! I've already waited thousands of years to retire. What's another 80 or so more years going to matter?" were my final words to the great Anne Boonchuy.
"So, in about 80 years I'm going to be…" replied Anne as she was zapped by a bright light. She didn't manage to finish her sentence, but I assumed this Anne girl would be safe back in her human form, ready to live out the rest of her life before taking over my position as the Multiverse Guardian. Little did I know I would have made a terrible mistake.
At Amphibia, where Anne has returned to the living world. This part is narrated from her perspective.
I wake up again having gone through the ordeal with the so-called Multiverse Guardian. I expect to return to my human body, but something doesn't feel right. My vision is weird, and I can see 360 degrees all around. I look down at my hands and immediately notice they are abnormal. Instead of the usual skin tone colour, they are in a funny shade of blue with oddly shaped black spots. They are also webbed, with four curved fingers instead of the five straight ones I should be seeing.
I soon stare around, and everyone is gasping. I then see Sasha and Marcy who have become giant like figures with long spindly legs, forward facing eyes and a strange bump on their faces. They immediately yell out together "Anne, don't tell me you became a FREAKING frog!"
I could still speak and answered "WHAT! I'm just like the Plantars now?"
I then saw my adopted family - Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly jump over to me. "There now Anne, I'm sure we can find some way of fixing this," said Hop Pop.
"Well, now there will be Spranne against the world forever!" cheered Sprig.
"Guys, I didn't want this to happen!" I protested. "I wanted to go back to my parents and the human world. Now what do I do?"
A piece of paper soon falls off my slimy back. My two human friends Sasha and Marcy pick it up and find that they are shards from the Calamity Stones. But there are only two of them, with the blue gem missing.
I see King Andrias approaching, and he speaks out "Well I'm glad that's all over now. But this changes everything!"
"Well duh, I'm now trapped in this strange frog world and will never be able to join my friends ever again" I replied to him.
Sometime later
We get a visit from the ghost newt Valeriana, who explains that there was some mix-up with transferring Anne's spirit and that it was put into a frog body instead. She also highlighted that without the missing blue gem shard, there is no way for the box to activate and return us to Earth.
"So, I guess us three are stuck here forever," I say to Sasha and Marcy who tower over me.
"Don't say that Anne, I think we still have time to figure out a way to get us back somehow and return you to your human state," replied Marcy.
"Yeah, we're still your friends no matter what form you take," said Sasha.
"Come to think about it, I can see one solution," said Valeriana.
"Please tell me!" I replied.
"Well, it appears the blue gem was used to transform Anne into a frog. With the remaining gem shards, Sasha and Marcy can also be transformed into amphibians. That way, you three will still be friends in this world."
I looked up at Sasha and Marcy, who began to smile back.
"We will take your deal," said Sasha and Marcy together. "It doesn't matter if we spend our lives in this world, but as long as we're with Anne it should be fine."
"Aw thanks guys," I replied. "But don't you want to live out your human lives too? Being stuck as amphibians would sure suck for you."
"Anne, you taught me to empathise with others and be less of a jerk. Without you I couldn't have led the resistance against the Core," answered Sasha. "Hell, I can work with Grime and the toads as their diplomat in this new era."
"Me too, as you freed me from the Core's awful influence. I will be able to join the Newtopian elite and a reformed Andrias," said Marcy.
"Well, let's get this over with," said Valeriana as she placed the Calamity shards onto the ground next to the music box. With a short enchantment, she waved her staff and the energy from the stones soon unleashed a magical spell.
After a few minutes, I looked back and saw my two friends in their new amphibian forms. Sasha was a similar height to me; except she was a bulky pink toad with blonde hair. Marcy transformed into a green newt, retaining her black hair.
"Hey guys, this is actually pretty cool!" said Marcy.
"Yeah, I think I can get used to this form in no time," replied Sasha.
"So, I guess that's it then. We all spend the rest of our lives as talking amphibians in this world," I spoke.
Chapter 2: Worried parents and a strange event
Summary:
Whilst in their new amphibian forms, the Calamity trio accidentally open a portal and Sprig vanishes.
Chapter Text
Sasha, Marcy and I were riding aboard Joe Sparrow, alongside the Plantars who would become our new adopted family. We were heading back to Wartwood to settle down, considering the changed circumstances. It was still an unusual feeling as the three of us had not fully adapted to our much smaller amphibian forms.
"So, Sash and Mar-mar, do you have any plans to re-join the people who first took you in?" I asked them.
"Well, I do want to reunite with old Grimesy, but it can wait. I want to make sure you're still fine, although I'm sure you'd fit right in with the Plantars now!" Sasha replied.
"It's still a new experience for us all. It would be good to settle down in a quiet town before returning to the big smoke," answered Marcy.
We had just landed outside the Plantar farm, when I had a realisation. "Oh, heck Sash and Mar-mar, how do we tell our parents about all this?!"
"Well, I'm sure my parents have forgotten about the whole incident and decided to move away without me," said Marcy.
"Me too, last time I heard my parents were considering a divorce. It would be good if I don't have to think about them anymore," replied Sasha. "My god, those arguments were a nightmare for me to handle all the time."
I joked lightly at Sasha's comment, but followed up "I know guys, but my mom and dad would be worried sick right now. I told them it was just a quick return to Amphibia to beat the villains and I would be back within a week."
"You actually told them you were coming back!" Sasha exclaimed. "What if we were severely injured and couldn't return anyway?"
"Yeah, didn't think of that. My bad," I replied. "I wonder how they're feeling right now?"
Meanwhile at Los Angeles on Earth, in the Boonchuy household.
"Why hasn't my daughter come back yet? She said it was just a fight they had to deal with," asked Oum.
"Maybe there were complications in that world. Did you see how Anne fought off that giant salamander Andrias when he invaded our world? It was so intense I can't even comprehend," replied Bee. "Just give it a bit more time, it's only been two days for goodness sake."
"I know, but I don't want to lose my dear Anne again. She was gone for months last time and came back looking like a washed-up mess," said Oum.
Back at Amphibia, in the Plantar house
"This is awful. I can't even comprehend it!" exclaimed Sasha.
"Seriously calm down girl. I'm sure we can think of something," I replied.
"No, we can't. Our phones are useless, and we have no contact with our home world. Without the Calamity Box we can't even travel to Earth anymore," said Sasha worryingly.
"You two just relax," said Marcy trying to reassure us. "Anne, your parents would no doubt contact authorities including Mr. X so they can figure out a way to get a portal back to Amphibia."
"Yeah right, as if that would work," answered Sasha. "Last time it was Anne's inner energy that activated the portal. Now they have nothing remotely as powerful."
"Sash, why don't you just stop worrying about my parents and think about all the great things we can do here in Amphibia," I followed up.
"You're right Anne, maybe I am overthinking things too often," replied Sasha. "Let's just get inside the house and rest up."
Once inside the Plantar house, we were feeling more relaxed. I got out my phone, but noticed it was covered with blue slime. "Guess that must be my natural coat I excrete in my frog form. Well, my phone is probably ruined by now," I said.
I put the phone down on the table, but something strange happened. A blue aura lit up around the phone, as if it somehow absorbed my inner Calamity energy.
"Guys, what the heck is that?" asked Marcy.
"I don't know, but we should stay away from it," I replied.
Sasha was too engrossed with her phone to notice the aura. When she did look up, she was shocked and dropped her phone. We all then saw the aura grow bigger, as if it was creating another portal.
"Anne, Sash – I think we should get away from here. That thing looks like another portal about to open!" said Marcy in a fearful tone.
Sprig was with us three and could also see the unusual aura developing in front of us. He was too curious by it and jumped up to the table to have a closer look. "Hey, this thing is cool!" exclaimed Sprig as he began touching the aura.
"Stay back Sprig! You don't know what that thing is capable of!" I shouted.
"Relax Anne, it's probably harmless," replied Sprig.
Once Sprig started playing around with the aura, it soon enveloped the whole table and zapped him away.
"Oh no, what do we do now?!" I asked in a freaked-out manner.
"I say we all go through that portal," replied Marcy.
"But what if it takes us to some strange new alien world? How will we survive?" I ask.
"Look, based on what happened it appears Anne's Calamity energy connected with Sasha's and created a portal back to Earth. Isn't that the most logical explanation?" said Marcy.
Sasha and I both nodded, but we were still hesitant. "Even if that does take us to Earth, what will everyone think when they see us all as amphibian freaks?" I ask.
"Yeah, what happens if we are taken to the FBI and get dissected?" Sasha followed up.
"Look guys, I'm sure we can explain to authorities in a sensible manner. But we must go and save Sprig," said Marcy.
Sasha and I both groaned, but we knew we had no other option but to jump through the newly created portal.
Chapter 3: Return to Earth
Summary:
The calamity trio arrive in Earth whilst still in their amphibian forms. They are captured but later released into the care of the Boonchuy parents.
Chapter Text
Sasha, Marcy and I jumped through the portal. We looked around and knew we had definitely arrived back at Earth in Los Angeles. Fortunately, it was a safer location than last time, as we were in a large park with a pond and luckily other people were far away.
"We're finally home!" exclaimed Sasha.
"Guess this is a familiar feeling Anne," replied Marcy. She was still unstable with her newt tail, and accidentally flicked it almost knocking me over. "Sorry Anne," said Marcy apologising.
"Looks like you're still just as clumsy in your amphibian form," I answered.
We soon found a large empty table and gathered under it.
"I say we stay here until nightfall and then emerge. We don't want others to see us like this," I spoke up.
"Good idea Anne," replied Marcy as her stomach began to growl. "But what food do we eat around here. All I see is just trash."
"Well, there are insects and bugs all around us," I answered picking up a beetle off the ground before putting it into my mouth.
"Eew, that's totally gross!" exclaimed Sasha. "I'd rather just stick to human food thank you very much."
Unfortunately, someone heard us and started walking towards where we had gathered. It was a teenage boy with a purple mohawk, dressed in a punk style.
"Sasha, I know you're around here. Come out and we can chat, I want to know all about your adventures in that strange world you visited," the boy said.
"Psst Anne, what do I do now?" asked Sasha in a worried tone.
"Just hide and stop speaking, you sound just like your human voice." I replied.
"Hey, isn't that Anne too," said the boy as he bent down and peered under the table where we were hiding. He immediately saw the three of us in our amphibian forms and freaked out.
"Woah, am I hallucinating or is that three weird looking freaks I am seeing here?" said the boy.
"Vince, it's me your old pal Sasha!"
Vince soon fainted and fell backwards.
We all panicked wondering what to do next. After a minute or so, Vince suddenly got up and began dialing a number on his phone. "Is this the police, I want to report a disturbance. I found three talking freaks and one of them, a pink toad claims to be my friend Sasha."
"Oh no, this is totally bad!" said Sasha freaking out.
"I say we make a dash for my parents' home. Trouble is we don't know how to get there," I said.
"You think?!" answered Sasha. "We're all going to end up as amphibian experiments!"
"Just calm down both of you," said Marcy trying to reassure us. "We will ask to be taken to some specialists, including Dr Jan and Mr. X, they could help us and even try to change us back to our human forms."
Sasha and I were not convinced but still decided to stick with Marcy. Within minutes, the police arrived and had brought Mr. X along with them.
"Well, if it isn't my old friend Anne and her pals again," said Mr. X. "You lot are in a whole heap of trouble."
"How did you know?" I asked. "What makes you think it's us, we could be some random amphibian creatures who have travelled from that world."
"Look Anne, your voice clearly gives you away," said Mr. X. "I don't even know how you transformed into those hideous creatures in the first place."
The three of us groaned as we were taken away. We eventually arrived at a laboratory, where Dr Jan and Terri were waiting. They had brought along my parents too, who were shocked seeing the three of us in our amphibian forms.
"Is that my daughter as a TALKING FROG?!" asked Bee.
"It's still me Dad," I replied. "I won't harm you."
I could see my dad was still uncomfortable, although he didn't faint this time.
"My goodness, we never thought humans could actually become these talking amphibian creatures," said Dr Jan.
"Well, I say we kill them all," said Mr. X. "After all, they could have turned evil."
"Please don't hurt us!" I pleaded. "If you could find a way to return us to human form, we won't interfere with you again."
"If that's the case, why did you bring one of your actual froggy friends too?" Mr. X asked as he brought out Sprig, who was gagged and trying to fight back.
"It was all an accident, I swear! Look if you want to know why we transformed into our current amphibian forms it was because I actually died in that other world fighting off evil and there was some mishap when I was revived."
Mr X was shocked hearing that news. "But why are your two friends also in that state? Did they die too?"
"Well, actually no. We were too distressed seeing Anne in her frog form, so we both decided to use some magic to transform ourselves and hopefully spend our lives in that kingdom," Sasha replied.
"Just give me a minute. This is too much to take in," answered Mr. X.
"But why come back to Earth if you knew you weren't in the proper state to do so?" asked Terri.
"It was an accident, a portal opened and Sprig being too curious played around and got teleported to Earth. We felt we had no choice but to come and rescue him," I replied.
"That is strange, how did that portal open from the other world?" Dr Jan enquired.
"It's complicated, but all three of us absorbed some magic when we were transformed into amphibians. That energy mixed with the electronics from the mobile phones we carried with us, and it created the portal." I answered.
"Sounds quite simple. So, what we need to do is get some powerful electronics and hopefully make another portal to send you girls back to that frog world," said Terri.
The three of us nodded slowly. "Well, what are you going to do with us in the meantime?" I ask them.
Mr. X answered "Seeing you all pose no harm to us; you can go back to your parents. Although that might be tricky for Sasha and Marcy."
"Are you saying my parents actually got divorced?" asked Sasha.
"And mine left LA for good?" Marcy followed up.
"Yes, that is the case girls," replied Mr. X. "Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy, how do you feel taking in all three of these amphibian children?"
"It's bad enough my daughter is a frog. But since you insist, we will take them all back to our home. Including the pink frog who was with us last time," said Oum.
After that incident, the four of us were in the company of my birth parents and in a car being taken to a safe place.
Chapter 4: Experimentation with calamity powers
Summary:
The Calamity trio, in the safety of the Boonchuy household, find a way of returning back to human form. They do encounter some challenges however, as the transformation is not permanent.
Chapter Text
The four of us (Sasha, Marcy, Sprig and I) were taken to my family home and we settled in quite comfortably. Naturally, both my parents interrogated us as to what happened with the final battle in Amphibia and why we had transformed into talking amphibians. At least they were more willing to listen to our explanations compared to the last time I outlined my adventures in the kingdom.
My mum saw that I was out of breath after the explanation and handed me a bottle of drink. "Here you go Anne, you must be thirsty after that talk," she said. I took the bottle, which felt heavier than normal due to my short stature. I quickly read the label and was shocked seeing 'Blam Berry Blitz'.
"What the hell mum, are you trying to kill me?!"
"But isn't this your favourite drink Anne?" replied Oum.
"If you haven't already realised I'm no longer human anymore! Hop Pop, that elderly frog who visited last time attempted to try that as a dare when I first entered Amphibia and he ended up getting into a weird state seeing all kinds of hallucinations. I don't want that thank you very much."
"Well sorry if I still haven't mastered what is good or not for your new froggy form. How about I just give you some water instead?"
I nodded and my mum passed me a glass of water which I drank.
"Now how about you four all get some rest whilst I cook you up some lunch," suggested Oum.
The four of us went into the living room whilst my mum cooked up lunch. Sasha was the only one who was still processing the whole series of events and was quite unsettled. She eyed Sprig and began to lunge at him. Marcy was the first to react and tried to intervene, although she still wasn't in control of her newt form and knocked her tail straight into Sasha's face.
"Watch where you're pointing that stupid tail of yours!" yelled Sasha.
"It's not my fault, I'm still adjusting to the whole reality of being a newt," answered Marcy.
"Well, you're the genius who suggested that we go to Earth whilst we're still in our amphibian freak forms," replied Sasha in a sarcastic tone.
"Hey Sash, Mar-mar just calm down you two," I called out trying to restore order. "It was our collective decision to come here and try and get Sprig."
I could tell Sasha was beginning to get upset. "Did you see how one of my best friends reacted when he saw I was a toad. It's like he doesn't even recognise me anymore!"
"There now Sash, I'm sure we can try to figure out a way to get us back to human form." I said, wrapping my froggy arms over Sasha's shoulder.
"It's no use!" Sasha yelled out as she pushed me away. "We're stuck here as freaks, and we won't be able to see any of our human or amphibian friends again!"
I waited for a short while before speaking up again. "Sash don't forget you are the strongest of us all. Without you, Maggie would have continuously bullied me at school."
Sasha slowly began to calm down and wiped away her tears. "I'm sorry Anne, it's just that all I feel now is despair."
Marcy chimed into the conversation "Yeah, and you saved Anne and I from those bullies at the park when we were in kindergarten."
Sasha suddenly began to feel a wave of emotions and I could see a pink glow emanating from her. Her bulky toad body began to expand into her elongated human form, with her normal arms and legs soon appearing. Sasha could feel her transformation and was shocked "Am I actually transforming to my human form?" she asked in a surprised tone.
"Yes, you are!" Marcy and I both yelled out with excitement. Despite that, it was scary seeing Sasha tower over the two of us in her human form.
After Sasha completed her transformation, she brought Marcy and I back into the kitchen and showed my parents. "I don't know how but I activated the powers to transform back into a human!"
"That's great news!" Oum replied. "But how do we get my daughter to transform?"
"I think these stone shards can still be triggered by our personal emotions. So, it seems that Anne and Marcy just need to think of times they used their heart and wit emotions, and they will transform back to human state." answered Sasha.
Marcy was the first to try, and she said "Hey Anne and Sash, remember the time when I won first place in that Science competition. I was in 2nd grade but didn't get the official prize because the competition was actually meant for 4th and 5th graders. When I showed my parents, they were so proud of me, and it was such a surreal feeling!"
Sasha and I both acknowledged Marcy's comment and gave her support. "Yes Mar-mar, you totally smashed it that time!" I followed up.
Marcy was waiting patiently, expecting to transform like Sasha into her human form. But there didn't seem to be any response as she remained stuck in her newt form.
"Maybe the transformation only happens under stress," I suggested. "Because Sasha was clearly upset and thinking of all the times when she used her inner emotive strength whilst under pressure helped."
"Yeah, I think you're right Anne," said Sasha.
"Well, enough messing about with your transformations into or out of human form. Lunch is ready you lot," my mum spoke up.
We then left and sat on the dining table to have lunch with my parents.
My mum cooked up Pad Thai and green curry chicken, with both dishes being delicious. Although being in frog form meant it was hard to use the cutlery with webbed fingers. Marcy in her newt form didn't fare much better, and there was even an incident where I lost control of my extended tongue. Whilst trying to chew normal human food, it accidentally flicked out and almost hit my mum who was sitting opposite me.
"Hey, watch out with that wonky tongue of yours!" said Oum.
"Sorry mum, I'm still getting used to this frog body of mine and its unusual components."
Once we finished, Sasha was told to help clean up the table because she was the only one in human form. But she was reluctant and spoke up "Ms. Boonchuy, aren't you forgetting I'm just a guest here. Why can't you get your daughter to do it?" she asked.
"Well, we took you and Marcy into our family expecting to adopt you. Besides, Anne is still in her froggy form and I don't expect her to carry the weight."
"Don't worry mum, I can still help out a bit." I said carrying my plate and cutlery to the sink.
"Anne you really should be careful whilst in that tiny frog body of yours," answered Oum.
"Oh, it's not a problem mum. I'll be ok," I replied.
After Sasha had finished clearing the table, the four of us went back into the living room with my dad.
"So, Anne and Marcy - how does it feel to be looking up at the dominant one now?" Sasha asked as she stood up to reveal her full height.
"Sash, you were already the dominant one before we even went to Amphibia. Hell, you even pressured me to steal and open the Calamity box." I replied.
"That's fair Anne," said Sasha. "Now that I have my proper body back I might go out and see if I can catch up with any old school friends."
"No way, you're staying inside the house," said Bee. "I still don't know how you even managed to transform out of that frog like body."
"My dad is right. We should wait and see if your transformation is stable before we try anything too risky," I followed up. "Besides, you don't want to be stuck in toad form when you're out in public."
Sasha groaned but accepted my dad's reasoning. "Ok fine. But once we know that this transformation is stable, I'm getting out of here."
Sprig saw an opportunity to lighten the mood and he leapt onto Sasha's upper legs. "Look at me, I'm climbing this human!" he exclaimed.
"Ew get off me you dirty pink frog!" shouted Sasha as she tried to flick Sprig off her legs. "You're lucky I don't have my trusty sword and weapons with me, otherwise you'd be crushed to a pulp."
Sprig soon jumped off, feeling embarrassed. I then restarted conversation with Sasha. "Look I know you want to get back to normal life, but things are different now. Whilst we're here with Sprig, why don't we talk about how much fun we all had in Amphibia?"
"Ok if you insist Anne," said Sasha. "My favourite experience was being accepted by old Grimesy as his lieutenant."
As soon as Sasha had spoken, we could see another pink glow being emitted from her body. Sasha herself felt a strange sensation as her muscles began to cramp up. "Guys, what the hell is happening to me!" she yelled out.
We could see Sasha's limbs shrinking, as her torso became chubby, and her skin soon grew thick scales. When it was over, Sasha soon looked around and saw she was a similar height to Marcy and I.
"Oh no, am I back in my toad body again?" she asked.
Marcy and I nodded.
"No, this can't be!" Sasha yelled as she threw her fists onto the sofa.
"I think I know how these transformations work," said Marcy. "If we think of a time when we used our calamity powers whilst under stress, we can change into human form. We then return to our amphibian states once we think of the experiences we enjoyed back in Amphibia."
"You're not helping genius," retorted Sasha in a gruff tone.
"No, I think Marcy has a point. Sash, you just need to think of the times when you helped us. Then you might be able to undergo the transformation again," I answered.
Sasha followed my advice, trying to recall the memories of when she helped Marcy and I in the past. But it didn't seem to help because Sasha couldn't seem to activate the transformation. "This is pointless, we won't be able to return to our human forms ever again." Sasha spoke up.
"Don't think like that," said Marcy. "Maybe you need to have a full mental breakdown like you did earlier this morning. Or it could be that the gem shards are too weak and can only do a limited number of transformations."
"Yeah, I agree with Marcy. We just need to stay with my parents inside and do more experimenting to figure out how we can trigger our transformations at will," I followed up.
Sasha reluctantly accepted her fate as she sighed. "Alright you two have a valid point. It's just that I want this all to end," she said.
We all decided to rest for the remainder of the afternoon and vowed to do some more experimenting tomorrow.
