Chapter Text
On the 11th of May in the Jungle of Nool, Gertrude McFuzz was looking for Horton when the Wickersham Brothers got in her way.
“Wickershams, if you’ll excuse me.” Gertrude says as she passes them.
“Still trying to find that clover for that fool elephant?” The shortest one asked.
“As a matter of fact I am and it is none of your concern.” She replied coldly. “It’s bad enough that I can’t fly, I have no idea where Horton is now, I can’t bear it anymore! Now get out of my way!”
“You should know that he’s not worth it.” The taller Wick said.
“Of course he is! He has the kindest heart of anyone I know.”
“What I really mean is that he doesn’t care for you like you care for him. You should be happy with someone who returns your feelings.”
“He would never stop talking about the imaginary world on that small speck of dust.”
Gertrude crossed her arms. “You may be right. But I don’t care, because I don’t care if he doesn’t return my feelings. I just want him to be okay and I don’t care what you banana brains will do about it!”
Chapter 2: An Elephant Bird
Notes:
So today was my school’s last show of Seussical the Musical and I’ve been wanting to write a fic about Horton, Gertrude, and the Elephant Bird’s found family aspect. But I never got around to it, but here it is! I’m pretty proud of how it turned out, it may be a bit corny but whatever!!
Chapter Text
Horton felt a weird responsibility when Mayzie left him with her egg. Like he needed to protect no matter the cost. He did for the Whos but caring for the egg was different. And when he met Mayzie again in Palm Beach she said “the egg’s all yours.” Those words replayed over and over again when Horton was with the Circus McGurkus for 4 months.
He feels just as protective and caring for his child as he did when he was still just an egg. He spends all his time with his family now. Teaching his son how to navigate through the jungle grounds and telling him stories about the Whos and Whoville and JoJo of course. How they’re both incredible thinkers. He hopes the same for his son.
When it comes to Gertrude. He was so disappointed in himself for never noticing her selflessness, he realized after their son was born that she cared for him long before he found the Whos on the small of dust, long before he sat on the egg, in the nest, in a tree.
He’s just happy they’ve made a good life together after the ordeals they’ve been through. Gertrude also spends a lot of her time teaching their son about the sky, because he’s part elephant; it took time to adapt to that part of the environment. On the mother and son’s first lesson, he almost tumbled all the way to the ground but Gertrude managed to save him before he did.
It’s important to Gertrude that their son receives the care of both a father and mother since Mayzie couldn’t bother to be there for him.
After a day of flying and exploring the Jungle of Nool’s great joys, the quaint family are safely in their home. The Elephant and the Bird with the one feathered tail are listening, amazed by their elephant bird talking about how much he enjoyed his day.
