Chapter Text
Kirby bounced along Cappy Town's road waving at the passing Cappys. He couldn't stay and chat however because he was on an important mission! Get food!
His first stop was the mayor's house who was always found outside enjoying his morning coffee and doughnut while reading the news. Kirby skidded to a stop in front of his porch and bounced up to where he sat.
The mayor looked up from his coffee and paper at the waiting pink ball who looked happily at him.
"Why, good morning Kirby, doing well I hope?" The mayor greeted with a smile.
"Poyo!" Kirby greeted, grinning at the mayor.
"Always good to hear, always good to hear," the mayor mused, before returning to his paper and coffee. However there were no retreating footsteps and the mayor could feel Kirby's eyes staring at him.
He looked up to see that, indeed Kirby was staring over the top of the table at him with the biggest and sparkliest eyes they could manage. The mayor chuckled slightly at the display.
"Is there something you want Kirby?" He asked lightly. Kirby nodded his head quickly before pointing a nub at the doughnut sitting on the table before looking at the mayor hopefully once again. He shook his head with a light chuckle before pushing the doughnut within Kirby's reach to which the child happily grabbed and ate it before he could blink.
"Poyo!" Kirby happily chirped before running back onto the road.
"You're welcome!" The mayor called after him. He sighed and pulled a second doughnut from behind his coffee pot. This routine had happened enough times that he had learned to bring a second one for Kirbys morning visit. It was always a highlight to see them of course but the mayor wouldn't mind less doughnut stealing.
--------------
He stopped by a few assorted Cappy's homes he knew would be generous to share some of their breakfast before heading over to Kawasakis restaurant to round off his meal.
Kawasaki knew who it was as soon as the bell above the door rang. By the time he had turned around the pink puff was happily seated at the counter.
"Why! If it isn't my favorite customer Kirby! What can I do for you?" Kawasaki greeted leaning on the counter with a smile.
"Poy-!" Kirby began.
"Oh no no no! Let me guess!" Kawasaki held up his hand to stop her which confused the pink puffball. "Let me see… are you here maybe… to do my dishes?" Kawasaki guessed with a sly smile.
"Poy!" Kirby cried in horror.
"No? Oh goodness then hm… that must mean you're here to get rid of my trash!" Kawasaki guessed next.
"Poy!!" Kirby cried again.
"Oh well darn I do need those things done. It's a shame you aren't here to help with that because I heard a rumor about whoever can help me gets the biggest breakfast I can make," Kawasaki teased watching the pink puffballs eyes get huge. Kirby thought for a minute while Kawasaki watched.
"Puy," Kirby stated professionally much to Kawasakis amusement.
"You'll help? Oh that's lovely! How about you gather any trash on the tables out there and throw it out and then when you're done you can meet me back in the kitchen. Sounds good?" Kawasaki asked, handing Kirby a small trash bag over the counter.
"Poy!" Kirby happily said, saluting Kawasaki before darting off the counter stool and running around the restaurant around waiters to pick up any trash left over.
Luckily with the help of the other waiters the task was done fairly quickly with one even helping Kirby put the trash bag in the can. They patted her head before taking the trash out to the back giving Kirby the signal to head into the back where Kawasaki was washing the dishes.
"Done already Kirby? Alright! You can help me dry the dishes and put them on that table alright?" Kawasaki offered, handing Kirby a towel and a plate. Kirby nodded determinedly before getting to work drying all the dishes Kawasaki handed her with surprising diligence.
With the help of the little puff the dishes were done faster then normal leaving only the payment for all those chores.
"Alright now I think ya earned your keep i'll have your food out in a minute," Kawasaki said.
"Poyo!" Kirby exclaimed excitedly before running quickly out of the kitchen to once again sit at the counter.
It didn't take too long before the pink puffball was rewarded for all her hard work with a massive breakfast platter.
"Poyo!" Kirby thanked Kawasaki as he dried his hands off.
"Oh it's no problem! Always happy to keep my little helper fed," Kawasaki joked before heading off to serve some new customers that came in.
Kirby watched the diners activity while he ate and noticed a lot of families eating brunch as well. They seemed to be happy and the kids seemed to be having fun with their families. A little pang of something went through Kirby but he shook it off as he finished his breakfast.
Kawasaki saw him out as Kirby went bounding off again but this time to his best friend's home! Tiff and Tuff!
-------------
Kirby bounced over the fence of the castles courtyard alerting the two to their arrival.
"Hey Kirby!" Tuff called happily.
"Hey, how are you Kirby?" Tiff asked, closing her book as Kirby bounded over.
"Poyo! Poyo?" Kirby said, sitting with a plop next to the two.
"Well she's being boring," Tuff complained, kicking his legs in the air from his spot on the ground.
"I am not! I'm reading about wishes. I'm sure Kirby would find that very interesting," Tiff countered.
"Poyo?" Kirby asked, tilting their head slightly.
"I'm glad you asked! Well you see I'm learning about wishes and the legends about them! Like this story right here! It says that anyone who sees a shooting star can make any wish and it'll come true!" Tiff happily explained.
"Ooo, poy!" Kirby exclaimed.
"See I told you they'd think it was interesting," Tiff said.
"Oh whatever," Tuff huffed, crossing his arms.
"Hey Kirby, what would you wish for if you saw a shooting star?" Tiff asked. Kirby thought for a moment before responding.
"Poy!" They said confidently.
"Infinite food I love it! I'd wish for a really fast car! Or a spaceship! Or to be king! Or for a pet dinosaur!" Tuff listed out.
"You only get one wish Tuff," Tiff said, rolling her eyes. Tuff scowled at his sister.
"Then I'd wish for a million wishes!" Tuff cried.
"That's not how-! Ugh! You're impossible! Well whatever I would wish for an infinite library where I could read whatever I want and not have to be around any annoying younger brothers," Tiff proclaimed.
"Well whatever then! Kirby and me are gonna go play without you then nerdy pants! Come on Kirby!" Tuff said getting up quickly and stomping away causing Kirby to follow quickly after him.
Luckily Tuff calmed down quickly enough and the two played dinosaurs together until their parents called them over to lunch where the kids were given sandwiches. Kirby watched quietly as Tiff and Tuffs parents worried and fretted over them and asked them about their day. Kirby couldn't help but feel a bit lonely being left out of this exchange but he didn't know why. Was it because Tiff and Tuff had parents? What did that even mean anyway? Kirby decided after lunch to go ask Tiff, while she may be annoying she was also one of the smartest people they knew who wouldn't make fun of them. Well, much anyway.
While Tuff went off to beat up a tree with a stick he found Kirby however plopped down next to Tiff who was still reading.
"Poy?" Kirby started.
"Huh? What's up Kirby?" Tiff asked, not looking up from her book.
"Poyo?" Kirby asked, pulling at some grass by his feet.
"Parents?" This caused Tiff to look up, "Well parents are people that take care of you. They raise you from when you're born," Tiff explained.
"Poyo?" Kirby asked.
"Well like um, like they feed you or brush your hair or tuck you in at night. Like dad always likes to read us bedtime stories or make us dinner with mom or mom walks us to school. They take care of you and keep you safe. Because they love you a lot and want you to be happy," Tiff said expanding on her explanation. This caused Kirby to pause and think for a bit.
Suddenly she got up, startling Tiff.
"Poyo!" She thanked Tiff before hurrying off to go hit trees with sticks with Tuff.
Tiff could only look on a bit startled as Kirby retreated.
"What a weirdo," she said, shaking her head and returning to her book.

Kirby stayed over at Tiff and Tuffs house before heading out to head home. Despite the siblings' parents worries about Kirby heading home safe, Kirby assured them that she would be perfectly safe.
She walked from town into the woods where her home resided, a small protected tree in Whispy Woods that Kirby slept in. She scrambled up the trunk like many nights before and plopped down into the fork of branches where a bed of leaves were. Cozy, Kirby looked up at the night sky.
Suddenly, as if by magic, a star shot its way through the sky causing Kirby's eyes to widen in wonder. He quickly thought of a wish and screwed his eyes up tight to put all his energy into the wish. After a moment he relaxed and opened his eyes to look at the night sky once more. He hoped his wish would come true.
Cuddling up into his leafy bed Kirby closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep only thinking of his wish as he slowly faded into unconsciousness.
"I wish someone could love and take care of me,"
—----------
Somewhere far away a human was seeing a shooting star of its own although perhaps not the same one. It had never seen a shooting star before now and it seemed sad that it had taken so long. It closed its eyes and quietly made a wish amongst the crowd of people.
"I wish…"

The car screeched to a stop on the busy road causing a flurry of honking from the cars behind them. The man behind the wall stuck his head out the window as his wife sat in shock at the strange event.
"Martha what just..." the man trailed off, the look of disbelief plain to see on his face.
"They were right there I felt... where did they go?" Martha squeaked out agreeing with her husbands shock.
They had both seen it, and from a few shocked passerby they had witnessed it to. The couple had hit someone, and then they were gone just like that. Robert checked every inch of the car and the road but not a single trace of of the person they had hit was left. If it wasn't for their dash cam providing the evidence the couple would have believed that maybe it was a trick of the light, maybe they had just had too little sleep. But now all the two were left with was confusion and video evidence of someone vanishing into thin air.
It would have been very happy that nothing was left behind.
But as one door closed, one story ended, a window creaks open and a pen picked up to write again.
