Work Text:

I gave so many signs.

It first started with bickering over who forgot to do the dishes. Then, who forgot to do the laundry. Then, Leon forgetting dates. Then, you not answering his messages or calls.

Then, everything became a problem.

"I'm sorry that I fucking work all the time!" He huffed, running his hands through his already disheveled hair. "What the hell do you want me to do?"

So many signs.

"I don't know? Maybe act like you care about this goddamn relationship!" You were tired. Tired of this relationship. Tired of him.

"Of course I care about this relationship!" Leon was now pacing the living room. "I'm sorry I forgot about this."

"This" was your 6 year anniversary together. You spent all last week planning it out. You made the dinner you had on your first date, you bought roses, and you even went out of your way to buy the stupid fucking candles everyone has on their anniversary's. But, it didn't matter. You sat at the kitchen table for 3 hours with a big smile on your face waiting for Leon to get home. He didn't show till he came in laughing on the phone with a coworker, not giving a damn to even remember your anniversary.

So I'm leaving out the side door.

"Yeah, well, I'm sorry too." You got up off the couch and walked over to the door, noticing the photos of you and Leon on the wall. You both looked so happy together. Where did it all go wrong?

"Where are you going, sweetheart?"

Sweetheart.

You once would have felt giddy if he called you that. Now, all that 10 letter word does is bring you enormous amounts of pain.

You're not my homeland anymore.

"I-" You choked. "I don't think I can do this anymore."

Leon's face immediately went pale. "What?" He rushed over to you and gently grabbed your arm. "Please, don't do this. I love you."

Tears started to pool in both of your eyes, which made you cry even more. You've only ever seen Leon cry twice the entire time you've known him. Once when he lost his mother, the other when he lost his dog. Your heart shattered.

We always walked a very thin line.

"Please..." He breathed. "Please, we can fix this. We always work things out. I'll do better. I swear on my fucking life."

You've heard those words thousands of times come out of both of your mouths. Finally, you've come to the realization that you are both liars. It's never going to work between the two of you, and one of you needs to have the strength to let go.

You grabbed his hand and brought it to your lips. "I will always love you, Leon, but this will never work out between us. We have fought and argued way too many times to turn this relationship around. We need to let go."

You turned around and grabbed your coat and keys.

"Wait-"

"I'll work something out with Claire to come pick up my stuff later on in the week." You wiped the tears that are now free falling from both of your faces.

Leon didn't know what to do. His face was as pale as a ghost and he was sobbing. How did he let this happen?

"I love you so much." Leon said as you opened the door.

You turned around and gave him one last glance. A small smile graced your lips,"I love you too, Leon Kennedy."

Then the door slammed shut and the only noise heard in the apartment was Leon's choked sobs.

I couldn't turn things around.
