Work Text:

Raffi woke up to the sun leaking through her curtains, rising as slowly as she was. Rubbing her eyes, she stretched, reaching for a glass of water on her nightstand. As she drank, she thought over her plans for the day.

Standing now, she opened the blinds, watching as the sun crept its way into the sky. She smiled softly. She watched the sunrise every chance she had. She made her way outside, grabbing a mat on her way.

Opening the front door, Raffi closed her eyes and took a deep breath, in, hold, then out. She laid out her mat and began doing a yoga routine she had learned years ago. It was like muscle memory for her at this point. Never faltering, she went from pose to pose smoothly and gracefully, feeling it throughout her whole body.

Raffi sat with her legs crossed, almost finished with her sequence, and breathed. Meditation wasn’t a part of the sequence originally, but it was a practice Raffi had decided to take up. Letting her thoughts pass her by like clouds was a skill that she’d desperately needed to work on. Today her mind went to the yoga she’d just finished.

It was peaceful, this sequence she’d become so used to. It was the stability of knowing how her body was about to feel, how things would affect her, that she’d come to love. Before she’d put substance after substance into her body, begging not to feel and not caring about the physical effects. But that was then, and this is now, Raffi mused internally. Everything felt so different. Everything was so different.

Raffi sighed peacefully, opening her eyes and stepping inside her trailer to make breakfast. Sure, she could easily replicate some food, but Raffi found cooking to be a more mindful activity to engage in. It was hard at first, focusing on her thoughts and not engaging with them, but it was a survival tactic.

She sat down with her plate, topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit, and ate. She focused on the food, feeling the different tastes and textures as she did so. Sometimes Raffi wanted to give up on mindfulness, on days when she woke up too tired to bother with it, finding no meaning in the practice. But with time, her wise mind and emotional mind found a balance. No longer did her emotional mind hold the reins, steering her on wild goose chases wherever and whenever it felt like taking her.

Raffi made her way into her garden to care for her plants. This was her favorite part of her day. She felt at home with her plants, growing used to having only them as company over the years. Among them previously was snakeleaf, but she’d set fire to that plant long ago, spreading the ashes in the wind as one final fuck you to the drug and the hold it used to have over her.

“Hello,” Raffi said, voice lilting as she grabbed her watering can. She’d named them all, talking with them and dragging her fingers along their leaves and vines. Some of them shared names with her loved ones, as she saw fit. Some shared personalities with them, and some just reminded Raffi of them in a way she couldn’t put into words. She watered them all, whispering about how much they’d grown and how well they were doing, along with messages for their namesakes (which Raffi hoped would reach them somehow, wherever they were in the universe).

When Raffi was done, there was still time in the day, so she decided to have a bath. She ran the water, pouring in placing different herbs and flower petals in it before settling into the warmth. She sighed, closing her eyes and taking in her senses.

Once the water had gone cold, she stood, drying herself off. It was almost time. She’d gotten dressed and styled her hair, wanting to look somewhat presentable for the call.

She sat in wait until suddenly she heard the pinging, picking up immediately. “Seven,” she grinned.

“How was your day, Raff?” Raffi, still with a grin on her face, prepared to tell her all about it.
