What was the first fire Jaritea had ever put out?
Sure, there was the great conflagration that consumed an entire imperial outpost during her first year as an interstellar firefighter. There was the district trash fire when she was just graduating the academy, the one that made her miss lunch with her sister…fateful, in a way, given how Rum had gone and wound up taking her future husband instead.
There was that time her mother set the stove on fire when she was in high school due to an excess of spice and a misaligned flamethrower while cooking…
No. The first fire Tea put out was probably the one that burned inside her and set her cheeks flushed every time she and her sister played in their younger years. It was a fire she couldn’t quell with an orbital drop of water, or a hose…but with something a little bolder.
It was only smothered when she leaned over in their shared spaceship, on their way home from school, and smiled with the offer to ‘practice kissing’.
Rum barely agreed before Tea had pressed her lips to hers in an excited, if inexpert kiss. The fire was smothered for a time when they were done. And each time Tea got better at it, fitting for the Universe’s Greatest Firefighter.
Her sister became an empress, fitting, since she still ruled over a part of Tea’s heart. But even so, on the rare moments the stars align and they each find a spare moment, they meet up and smother the smoldering heat once more, together. As sisters.
