Work Text:

It was only 2:27pm. Cater’s Unbirthday party at Heartstybl started in half an hour, so why wasn’t Kalim there? He was never late to anything. Not class, not lunch, not crazy hijinks, and definitely not his friend’s unbirthdays. So why? Cater, ever so worried, decided to call Jamil, knowing how Jamil almost never left Kalim’s side. It ringed once, twice, thrice- he picked up.

“Hello? Cater why are you calling me? Shouldn’t you be getting ready for your unbirthday party?” Jamil looked down at the floor, holding his phone close enough to his ear for him to clearly here Cater respond.
“Kalim isn’t here.” Cater could feel the worry oozing though his phone as Jamil replied, “ What do you mean..?”
“Jamil… Kalim was supposed to be here-“ Cater looks at his watch for the time, “An hour ago. Is he with you or..?”
Jamil froze in place. “No.” Was all he could get out of his mouth before the terror set in. Kalim always told him where he was going, so why now did Kalim disappear without saying a word? ‘Maybe he’s just thinking about things…’ Jamil wondered to himself as he absentmindedly hung up on Cater. I mean, it had only been a month since Jamil’s overblot, but he thought he and Kalim finally patched things up after they talked to each other more openly with their feelings. Then it hit him- what if Kalim was kidnapped? It had happened before, so why didn’t he instantly think of that?! A mix of fear and anger flowed through Jamil’s body; he was going to kill whoever had his Kalim. He threw on his coat and ran out of his dorm, but before he could stop and ask his other doom-mates if they had recently seen him, he heard someone shout out.

“OH MY GOD! IS THAT OUR HOUSEWARDEN ON THE ROOF?!”

Jamil had never bolted faster in his life. The adrenaline in his body was so high, and it kept rising the closer he got to the roof. ‘Please god please let Kalim be on this roof and not at asphalt ground below…’ He swung the door open with immense force, and Kalim jolted, turning quickly towards him. Tears threatened to pour out from Jamil’s eyes when he saw it. Those white and pink scars littering the wrists of his prince. And the broken cry that followed almost sent him off the edge as well.
“JamJam?” His voice was shaking, and his eyes, pouring tears, devoid of any happiness. His lip quivered as he slowly stepped ever so closer to the edge of their school building.
“KALIM PLEASE!” Jamil couldn’t hold back his crys as he dropped to his knees. “PLEASE GET AWAY FROM THE EDGE AND TALK THIS OUT WITH ME! I BEG YOU!” Kalim bit his lip so hard, blood started to pool from where his tooth sat. He slowly walked away from the edge, and once he reached Jamil, he couldn’t hold back his violent sobs.
“Jamil, Jamil, I’m sorry. So sorry. Please JamJam, please, forgive me.” His sobs slowly got louder and his breathing faint; A panic attack. Jamil had always helped him calm down when he got this way, yet why was it so hard for him to calm down as well? Jamil started to slowly rub circles on Kalim’s back, hushing him ever so softly while he was bawling. With a ‘ssh’ and a ‘It’s okay’ ever so often, he finally calmed him down.

“Kalim… why? Are you alright?”
That question almost made Kalim break into sobs again. He held his breath, then decided to confide in his trusted companion.
“My whole life I felt as if I was never good enough. Never good enough to be born in a rich family, and never good enough for you.” Kalim let a tear fall as he looked Jamil in the eyes. Jamil started to tear up again.
“After your overblot, even though we forgave each other, I could never forgive myself. Then I heard what my peers said. I heard what they’re thoughts of me were. ‘Kalim is so selfish!’ ‘Kalim is an awful person for how he treated Jamil’ ‘he should be ashamed. No, he should be dead.’ None of that hurt me as much as what I heard today though. ‘Kalim doesn’t deserve to be prince.’”
Jamil looked up at his prince, locking eyes. He could tell Kalim wasn’t okay whatsoever.
“Kalim… who cares what those people say. You deserve happiness. You deserve to love yourself. You deserve me. But most importantly-“ he grabbed Kalim’s chin, “You deserve to be prince. And even if you wish to not become prince, and pass it to someone else, you’ll always be my prince, habibi.” That’s what made Kalim leap into Jamil’s arms. He clung onto him like a child to their mother after lightning struck. Kalim wept harder then he ever had in his life, while Jamil cooed him back to a calm state.
“JamJam… you called me Habibi… ‘my love’” Jamil’s face flushed. He didn’t even realize he said it. He was about to say something when soft lips on his stopped him dead in his tracks. He didn’t resist, though. Their lips intertwined as the world around them felt slow; forgetting everything that led up to this. Once broken, the two stared deep into each other’s before a call rung out from Jamil’s phone. He sighed and looked at the screen. Incoming call: Cater Diamond. He answers the phone, clicking the speaker button.

“Hello? What is it, Cater?”
“Have you found Kalim?” Cater didn’t know. Apparently only scarabia could see Kalim on the roof. No matter, Jamil knew Kalim wouldn’t want him to tell Cater what had really happened, so he just lied.
“Oh Kalim was asleep in his room. He was so excited for your party he knocked himself out. Don’t worry, we’re on our way.” Before Cater could reply, he hung up.

Jamil slowly rises to his feet, then holds a hand out for Kalim to grab. Once they’re both on their feet, Jamil intertwines his hand with Kalim’s, looking down at him with a smile before replying,
“Well then Habibi, my prince, we have a party to attend.” Kalim smiled up at him and rested his head on his shoulder as they walked to Heartsbyul. Maybe living really was going to be worth it.
