Work Text:
Isagi is a beta.
That was the unarguable truth that everyone—aside from the select few—agrees with.
It’s just hard to try and refute something that seems glaringly obvious.
First and foremost, he was scentless, a trait commonly linked to betas of any kind, male or female. And, in return, was rarely affected by the scents the others give off.
The only times they were able to elicit a reaction out from him was when Ego gathered all of them in the same place, but even they had to admit that the scents—all dominating and consuming, fitting for the egoists that they are—can get too aggressive at times.
Betas, while known for being the only group to hardly ever be swayed due to scent alone, cannot ignore huge concentrated amounts of it in one place, much less a closed-off room. So, no one really gave much thought to his reaction at the time. Besides, Ego was there showing off a brand new system altogether, they really didn’t have enough time to think of other people besides themselves.
Secondly, Isagi was sensible. It’s not like they want to play into the stereotype that all alphas are hot-headed creatures, prone to acting out and rarely rational about all things, but well. They are in Blue Lock after all.
A place where being a young egoist is a plus on the field, but that doesn’t really translate as well, if at all, off of it. So, is it really that surprising? And, while Isagi can also act out, if prompted or on the field, he doesn’t really let his second gender dictate him or his actions, at all. A definite beta attribute, at least from what they know of.
Lastly, he was passive. Not really submissive or even dominant for that matter. He never tries to outpower them in anything (outside of the field, at least) nor does he question their authority when it counts. He’s not afraid to call them out on their bullshit, but he also doesn’t care enough to bother as long as it doesn’t end in bloodshed. He can fight off their commands almost instinctually, which puts the alphas off for a while, but he seems to know when or when not to use that uncanny ability of his.
Like the time Reo almost went fully feral—stress and the change of environment taking a toll on him—and decided to fixate on Isagi of all people for some reason. Everyone chalks it up to Reo and Nagi’s weird relationship, but immediately after his suspiciously short feral episode, Reo claims that it’s not even that, and he can’t really pinpoint the reason why his alpha acted the way it did.
(Of course, everyone refused to believe him, and the Mikage heir can’t even blame them. He’d acted very out of sorts when it came to Nagi multiple times, and Isagi always seems to find himself in the middle of some precarious relationships in Blue Lock.)
While the participants already respected Isagi as a player, everyone’s respect for him as a person that day just skyrocketed into unquantifiable amounts. When faced with a feral alpha, on the verge or not, most betas would have triggered their fight-or-flight response out of instinct and fled the scene. Or freeze, but that just doesn’t end well for anyone, and neither does fighting. Especially in an alpha-filled, prison-like establishment.
So, everyone held their breath when Isagi was pounced on by the violet-haired alpha, snarling and growling all throughout. Isagi’s group of mismatched friends already gearing up for a fight, with Nagi—he was bantering with Isagi when Reo suddenly came out of nowhere which just fueled the ReoNagi theory everyone had even further—tense because that’s two of his special people, and either of them getting hurt isn’t a situation he wants to deal with. But before the crisis can devolve further, Isagi started talking to Reo like nothing significant is happening, as if Reo can’t deal him any damage of some sort.
Isagi’s voice was quiet, bordering on whispering and no one would’ve heard him in a normal situation, their group being rowdy as it was, but this wasn’t just any kind of situation. Everyone had their eyes and ears on the scene unfolding in front of them.
“Hi, Reo. Can I touch you?” He asked, hands moving slowly upwards to show the alpha that he doesn’t intend on doing him any harm. The alpha answered him with a snarl, fangs glinting as he did so. An awkward chuckle comes out of Isagi’s mouth at that, “A-ha, but that isn’t really an answer, Alpha.” A few eyebrows were raised at that, but it seems like Isagi knew what he was doing, so they let the beta be.
Reo’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, a questioning growl leaving his lips. Isagi hums, finally getting his hands where he wants them, just in front of his chest hovering between their bodies. “Will you let me touch you, Alpha? Can you do that for me?” He says, smile staggering a bit when the other went a bit too close as he nodded. He placed his hands on the other’s chest, stopping for a beat as the alpha stiffens, and when the heir on top of him started relaxing a bit, he quickly wrapped his arms around his neck.
The alpha struggled almost immediately, a threatening snarl resounding throughout the room which put everyone out of the trance they were in—what were they so fixated on?—and Isagi’s friends into action. But before they can even touch either one of them, Isagi raised his voice, “STOP! Stop! Reo, Alpha, look at me. Only me.” With his hands affixed on either side of Reo’s face, blue eyes staring at the other’s purple ones—every single person in that room thought Isagi had a death wish, you don’t just stare at a feral alpha’s eyes, you can’t , but they will soon learn that when it comes to everything, Isagi Yoichi is an exception.
“I, I’m sorry that was so sudden, but trust me, okay? I have you, Alpha, we’re okay. We’re safe.”
The alpha despite being caught off-guard by the eye contact—so honest, so blue, so very Isagi—nods and breathes out. He then leans down, forehead meeting Isagi’s, and the beta lets out a small giggle as the strands of Reo’s hair meet his neck. The younger frowns when he noticed that the bluenette isn’t looking at him anymore, and promptly nips his nose. “Ah! Reo, what are you doing?” Isagi exclaims, shock written all over his face as he looked at the person still on top of him—“He’s staring at us again,” his alpha purrs—but then smiles in relief as he notices Reo’s eyes getting their usual hue again, getting less dilated by the second.
“Welcome back, Alpha.” Isagi teases, a hint of a smirk present on his face.
And, while everyone was still in shock that Isagi, of all people, stared a feral alpha down (or up, to be more accurate), lived to tell the tale, and brought that same alpha out of a feral state, Reo was blinking himself out of the daze he found himself in and sheepishly apologized to Isagi while still being in their previous position.
Isagi shakes it off with a, “If you’re sorry, it’d be a much better apology if you can get off me, y’know.” he did, even helping Isagi up with more force than he intended to which causes them to collide.
He didn’t fall, thank god, and supported Isagi instead. But then, for some reason, when he could’ve just let go of Isagi from the get-go, he didn’t.
“Uh, you can let go of me now, genius.”
“No? No.”
“Huh, what do you mean no? Reo?”
“I-I can’t? I won’t. Just no.”
The bystanders—specifically, Isagi’s circle, which could’ve meant anyone honestly—quickly started clamoring to Isagi’s defense, figuring the beta already dealt with enough for one day. With rivals and friends alike simultaneously agreeing in their heads to make Isagi’s day a little less hectic.
“You had your time, Reo, now get off.” The pink-haired speedster uttered, aura getting darker as the seconds ticked by. With Bachira aggressively nodding at the side, little comments like, “He’s hogging Isagi all to himself~ Not fair at all!”
“R-Reo-san, you should let Isagi-san go. He’s getting uncomfortable!” Nanase utters, a hand reaching out to grab Isagi out of the grip Reo has on him. Hiori stood by his side, with silent support and an all too willing helping hand. Only for a much longer limb to beat them out.
“Reo…” Nagi mutters, hand grasping Isagi’s arm, staring the other alpha down. Reo stiffens but doesn’t back down from the challenge, eyes still meeting the other’s as he tightens his hold on Isagi—who, at this point, resigns to being a rope for their little tug-of-war—head resting on top of the smaller boy. An action that aggravated Nagi even more, and so, with a pout, he pulls Isagi a bit too roughly towards him, “He’s mine. Let him go already~”
This causes half the room to erupt with rebuttals, and honestly, leaves Isagi dumbfounded. He’ll never understand how geniuses and their need for possession work. He met much less stubborn alphas with bigger problems than this. With a sigh, he maneuvers his arm out of Nagi’s hold—he actually just asked him, the giant's quite eager to please—and probably would’ve just elbowed Reo to get out of that hold but the alpha held him tighter, his alpha command—a voice much thicker and more animal than human—slipping past his lips, “Stay,” the violet haired alpha uttered.
And while everyone, Isagi included, knew that it did nothing to the beta, they were shocked when he suddenly slumped against Reo, a soft “Okay, Alpha.” following his actions.
When Reo came back to his actual senses... well, the Blue Lock members were left aghast with the realization that Isagi knew that Reo, while responsive and much more lenient, wasn’t really out of the state he was previously in, and indulged in his needs accordingly. Isagi wasn’t affected per se, he just did what he needed to do.
Isagi always knows what he needs to do, and it’s what makes him, him.
And while Ego started to enforce more of his rules to avoid this situation from ever happening again, deep down, everyone is kind of glad that they have a beta amidst their crew. Especially one that knows how to handle a feral alpha. So, uncanny ability or not, they’re glad Isagi was the one saddled with that gift.
So, yeah, Isagi is a beta.
No matter how good he is at handling several, hormonal alphas, Isagi is and will always be a beta.
Right?
