The One Where Chandler Defends Monica
A Friends Fan Fiction
Notes: I recently saw a reel on Instagram from the scene at Monica and Chandler's wedding where Monica tells her parents that she is not pregnant and Judy Gellar just walks away without congratulating Monica and Chandler on their marriage. This scene has always pissed me off and I decided to write a short scene where Chandler confronts Judy about her behavior.
Monica wiped tears from her eyes and walked back to where her father and Chandler were standing looking dejected.
"Mon, honey are you alright? Chandler enveloped her in a hug and rubbed her back consolingly.
Monica shook her head. "No, not at all. I just don't understand why she has to be so mean. She should be happy for us."
Her father's hand joined Chandler's on her back. "Harmonica, please don't be upset. Your mother and I love you very much and we couldn't be happier for you. I think she's just disappointed."
"Daddy, I love you too. I just never felt that Mom loved me same way you did. I don't know what her problem is."
Jack Gellar kissed Monica on the top of her head. "She'll come around."
Monica snorted. "I highly doubt that."
Breaking free from the embrace Jack Gellar looked at his daughter and son in law in confusion. "Do either of you know who is pregnant?" he asked.
Chandler and Monica shrugged. "No we don't. Phoebe and Rachel have not said anything to us. I'm sure the truth will come out eventually." Monica said.
"Why is Judy so passive aggressive toward Monica?" Chandler looked at his father in law with concern.
Jack Gellar shrugged. "Trust me son, we've been going to family therapy for years. She has not given us any reason why she treats Monica this way."
"Aside from playing favorites with Ross you mean." Monica said.
Jack Gellar grimaced. “ I realize how much that hurts you sweetheart. I'm so sorry.”
Monica kissed her father’s cheek gently. “ I forgive you Daddy.” she whispered.
Chandler hugged Monica close to him. "Honey, I hate to see how this hurts so much and wish your pain would go away."
"Thank you Chandler. That really means a lot." Monica whispered.
Chandler hated to see his wife so upset. He vowed to solve the two mysteries at hand.
At the reception after the speeches were made and Chandler and Monica were called up for the first dance. They embraced each other.
"We solved the mystery." Monica said.
"Really, that was fast. Who is pregnant?"
Monica grinned. "Phoebe and Rachel just talked to me. Rachel's pregnant I'm so excited for her."
Chandler smiled. "That's great. I'm glad you're feeling a little better."
" I love you so much Chandler." Monica whispered.
"I love you too Monica.. always." Chandler brushed Monica's hair out of her eyes and kissed her forehead gently.
After the all the dances including the father-daughter dance ended Chandler went up to Jack and Judy's table and tapped his mother in law on the shoulder. "Mind if we talk for a second?"
"Of course Chandler."
Once they went into the hallway Chandler let out a long breath.
"What the hell is your problem Judy?"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard what I said."
"I don't believe I know what you are talking about."
Chandler crossed his arms. "Yes, I think you do.."
"Enlighten me."
"Monica's feelings were very hurt earlier Judy."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because she doesn't think you fucking care... personally I don't think you do either."
"Of course I do. I care about having grandchildren."
"First of all you already have a grandchild or did you completely forget about Ben?"
Judy's muscles tensed. "We resent Carol for cheating on Ross with Susan."
"That doesn't change the fact that Ben is your grandchild Judy."
"What is your point Chandler?":
Chandler's face grew red and he cleared his throat.
"Could I be anymore pissed off? It's our wedding day damnit! I love Monica... I always will. Clearly you do not love her... or if you did you would at least have respect for her and not so rude to her on a day we are supposed to be full of so much joy."
"I will not have you tell me that I do not love my daughter."
Chandler snickered. " If you do love her then I think you would not treat her the way that you do. "
"What do you want me to do Chandler?"
Chandler got very close to his mother in law's face. His eyes were full of rage.
"You owe Monica an apology not just for what happened today but how you've fucking treated her entire life."
"I certainly do not."
"What the fuck is your problem? What makes think you can get away with treating Monica like this?"
"It's lasted this long."
"Well honestly I would appreciate if you apologized to her and I know that she would too."
Judy Gellar stormed off toward the restroom.
"You're a coward Judy Gellar! I fucking hate you!" Chandler headed back into the function hall.
Chandler walked back across to the head table and took his seat next to Monica. At this point Ross was just finishing playing the bagpipes.
"Where did you go?" Monica asked.
""Talking to your mom. How did he do?"
"Pretty good actually. All his practicing paid off. What did my mother say? Is she going to apologize?"
Chandler sighed heavily. "I tried to reason with her. She has a huge stick up her ass for some reason. I hope she apologizes but I can't be so sure that she will. I'm really upset with her. You don't deserve to be treated like that and I'm so sorry you had to put up with that your whole life."
Monica had tears in her eyes. "Thank you Chandler. You don't realize how much that means to me. I really appreciate what you just did for me. To be honest I wish Ross did that for me when were younger but he never did."
"You have me now sweetheart...now and forever. I love you Monica." Chandler whispered kissing her cheek softly.
" I absolutely could not ask for anyone better to have by my side. I love you too Chandler."
