Work Text:
The sunset looked beautiful from here.
Our heroes were sitting upon a rock near the edge of a cliff side. Behind them was the ship they used to get there. Zeb suggested they look at the sunset from one of the highest points on the planet, as it looked better from up there. So here they were. Sitting next to each other, hand in hand, looking at the distance.
Kallus took in the breeze. The way the colors mixed in with the incoming night sky reminded him of the few breaks he had when he was with the empire. Times when he would be at his desk and for a brief moment and he'd look out over Lothal. He must've had his head in the clouds for too long, because Zeb started to call out his name.
"Kallus."
"Kallus?”
"KALLUS!"
"Oh. What? Yes, Zeb?"
Zeb sighed, a worried expression painted on his face. "Kal, what’re you thinkin' about in that head of yours?"
"Oh, nothing, just thinking about the view. Y'know, compared to the one I would rarely stop to look at on Lothal."
Zeb smiled, turning back to face the suns. "Ezra made us enjoy the sunsets there a few times. Back when you used to chase us around." The Last laughed a little, thinking about when the two of them were enemies.
"Yeah well I guess I wasn't done chasing after you. If you were to tell me I would be dating not only a Lasat, but a male Lasat, I would have laughed in your face," Kallus said, chuckling to himself. That's when Zeb remembered how long it took Kallus to accept the fact that he was gay. In Zeb’s culture, being queer was normal, celebrated even, but in the Empire it was a HUGE no no.
Kallus looked down, observing some random rock on the ground. "I could never have this if I'd stayed with the Empire."
"I was in denial for so long, I was so scared what would happen if somehow, some way the people around me found out." He bent over ever so slightly, his hand coming up to grip his hair. Zeb simply looked at him, listening to his woes.
"I saw firsthand what they did to people who didn't fit their idea of normal. I saw what they did to queer people," he sighed, sitting up properly. He turned to face his lover.
"But then I joined you and your rebellious group and I saw how free you all were. There was no one to shame me, no one to force me to be something I'm not. And more importantly, you were there." He looked at the other, smiling at the memory. Zeb shook his head, smiling back at him.
"Yeah, I remember when you realized we weren't homophobic. The shock on your face is something I'll never forget."
Kallus crossed his arms. "Well, excuse me. It's not what I was expecting!"
"Yeah, I guess I can't blame you. We came from two different places," Zeb said.
"Exactly, but it all made sense when I came here with you and saw how comfortable everyone was with queer people. I can almost imagine how you figured out you were gay," he said as he smiled at the sunsets.
"It really isn't much of a story, I kinda always knew. Then one day at dinner I kinda just said it. I was never one to fit into the mold anyway." Zeb continued to look at the suns. "So, what about you? When did you know?" Zeb turned to face the other as he asked the question.
"Deep down I kinda always knew. I can't really remember when I was like, 'yes 100% I am gay,' y'know?"
"Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I still can't believe you thought we were homophobic. Ezra is a walking pansexual and Sabine has the bi flag painted on her armor," Zeb explained. He truly did miss those two.
"Yes, I admit that I should have seen the signs. I guess you could say that my gaydar is shit." He barked out a laugh, and soon the air was consumed by the laughter. It was such a silly thing for Kallus to say. Some time passed and shortly after their fits of laughter died down.
"This planet is truly beautiful, you know that? It has some of the best landscapes I have ever seen, it's so rich with culture, and its people are quite handsome~" Kallus looked at Zeb with a flirtatious smirk plastered on his face as he cut himself off. Zeb looked at him and lightly pushed him.
"Yeah, well, I better be the only Lasat you have eyes for."
They both turned back to look at the sky. It was fully dark by now, only lightened by the moons and the stars. They should probably head back soon, but there was no real rush. They didn't have anything planned tomorrow.
"Don't worry dear, I wouldn't dream of being with anyone else," Kallus said with a small smile.
