“Thank you for indulging me,” Leonard said, gripping his hands on the steering wheel. Molly had driven in the United States before on a few occasions but she was still more comfortable driving in England than she was in the States. It seemed second nature for Leonard to drive, even though the car was ancient by his standards.
“Well, you indulged my sightseeing in Massachusettes,” she said. “And it wasn’t like I didn’t take extra time off. A side trip to Georgia worked out well.”
“Too bad the others declined to come,” he said. “Would have been nice to see my hometown with them in the past.”
“Are you really sure you want to do that?” Molly asked softly. She wasn’t sure she and Leonard were exactly friends, but they were friendlier than they had been at the beginning of the trip. It was something, and the fact that they had done some maybe more-than-friendly flirting had encouraged her to want to stay with him longer.
Funny, that.
They pulled up to a bar in Athens, closer to Atlanta than they had been earlier, and looked at the place. It looked very much like a small town bar with good food and good beer. They got out and Leonard turned on the alarm, and they went in. It was dark and everything she could have hoped for in a Southern American bar. They sat at a table and a waitress came by to take their drink orders. Leonard got a pint of the house brew and after a moment Molly did the same.
They sat at their table for a moment, looking around the place, when McCoy spotted something. “Gimmie a couple of quarters,” he said.
“Why?” she asked, digging into her purse.
“There’s a juke box and I want a dance,” he said. She grinned while digging around and pulling out four quarters. Together they stood up and she handed him the quarters while they moved over to the juke box. He looked over the songs, then inserted them in and pressed the buttons before offering Molly his hand.
A woman is a mystery a man just can't understand
Sometimes all it takes to please her is a touch of your hand
And other times you've gotta take it slow and hold her all night long
Heaven knows there's so many ways a man can go wrong
They swayed to the music, lost in the moment, ignoring their ordered drinks and the world at large to sway to a song about how the woman got lost in a kiss so the man must be doing something right. Molly pulled away slightly, staring at Leonard, and they leaned in towards each other. Suddenly there was a cheer from the bar area, where someone was watching something on the television, and Molly blinked out of her comfortable haze and let go of Leonard’s hands. Leonard sighed, and gestured back to their table and waiting drinks. The moment was gone, but if the blush on Molly’s cheek was any sign, maybe they’d get another moment later.
