Chapter Text
The start of Wednesday’s doom came three weeks before Valentine’s Day, in the form of a flyer that had been slipped under each of the students’ room doors in Nevermore.
Just one look at the flyer and Wednesday knew it was nothing good. It was an eyesore with its clashing combination of bright pink and deep red hues, together with random heart-shaped clipart scattered around the page. “Come join the team to organise Valentine’s Day games! You won’t regret it!” was printed big across, in a mix of cursive and block letters that clashed horribly.
Wednesday glared at the flyer and made her way to the opposite side of the room, leaving it on the floor near the door. The colours were so offensive to her eyes, she would much rather individually pluck out all her fingernails and leave it to bleed.
She guessed she’d just leave it to her roommate Enid to get rid of it, after all Enid practically dressed in those bright pink colours every day. She really didn’t understand why people would wear colours when the lack of it was so much better (but somehow, although she’d never admit it, Enid actually looked good in everything she wore, including fluorescent yellow).
Speaking of the devil, Enid burst into the room, the customary big smile on her face that made Wednesday feel like she was staring straight at the sun itself.
“Howdy, roomie!” Enid chirped out. She looked more excited than normal, but it wasn’t like Wednesday had memorised every single expression of Enid’s (she had). “I was in Yoko’s room just now, and she got a flyer to join the Valentine’s Day preparation team!”
“We got one too, if you must know. Kindly dispose of it in the rubbish bin and leave me to do my writing in peace.” Wednesday crossed her arms over her chest and waited for Enid to get rid of the bright pink flyer lying on the ground.
“Get rid of it? No way! I’m joining the team!” Enid announced, beaming as though she had just been given a new torture chamber instead of an invitation to join the Valentine’s Day team. “It would be so fun, Willa! Wanna join too?”
Wednesday pinned her with an unblinking stare that would have sent anyone else cowering in fear. “Ask that again and the only things you’ll be joining are the corpses in the graveyard.”
Enid, much to her chagrin, wasn’t fazed at all. “You should join in, soak up some of the holiday spirit.”
If there were two things Wednesday hated, it would be holidays and love, and Valentine’s Day was a holiday about love. No way in hell would she ever ‘soak up some of the holiday spirit’. “Enid, if you value your life-”
“Yeah yeah, I know, but really, Willa. I’m going, and my friends are going. Yoko, Divina, Xavier, Bianca, Ajax…”
Enid rattled off a few more names, but Wednesday was just fixed on one name. Ajax .
It was no secret that Ajax had a huge crush on Enid, and everyone except for Enid already knew that.
Wednesday’s fists clenched just the slightest. Whenever she thought of Ajax, not to mention Ajax with Enid, a weird feeling would always rise up within her, a feeling that she wished would go away. She didn’t know why she was feeling that way, and she hated things she didn’t know about. It was a feeling almost akin to… jealousy.
But Wednesday Addams never got jealous over a person.
That didn’t stop her from hating Ajax, though.
Enid, noticing she was spacing out a little more than usual, stopped what she was saying and looked at Wednesday in concern. That was one of the things Wednesday hated about Enid, noticing small things about her that no one else would.
“Willa, you okay there?”
“Yes. I stand by what I say, I’m not going to join the team.” Wednesday walked to her typewriter and started working on her novel, posture perfect and fingers typing at a constant pace. “Throw away the flyer and keep quiet.”
“Your loss!” Enid pouted disappointedly and flopped down onto her bed, taking out her phone which was making small irritating notification noises.
“Enid, silence your phone,” Wednesday muttered, not looking up from her typewriter.
“Oops, sorry!” She quickly silenced it. “Ajax keeps messaging me.”
Wednesday’s head slowly turned around to look at Enid, the weird feeling (of jealousy) surging up in her like a wave. “Why? If he’s bothering you, I’ll nail his fingers to the wall so he can’t ever text you again.” She said it a bit more harshly than intended.
Enid giggled, the sound like bells chiming in the wind, and Wednesday found herself wanting to hear more of it. “It’s fine, Willa. He’s just texting me about the Valentine's Day thing. I appreciate your concern though.” She made a heart-shape at Wednesday with her hands.
Wednesday’s pulse sped up a bit more than usual at the sight of that, probably because she was getting to an exciting point in her novel and not any other reason.
==========
“Okay, from today onwards we’ll have to work hard to organise and plan things for Valentine’s Day. We have only three weeks to do things,” Yoko said, twirling a pen around her finger and patting the blank sheet of paper to be used for planning.
They were sitting in a circle in Yoko’s room to discuss what Valentine’s Day initiatives they should organise, but so far they had not made any progress.
“Ooh, wait, we need a group name first!” Enid exclaimed. She was still rather disappointed Wednesday didn’t want to join, she had thought it would be a good chance for her to spend more time with the goth girl.
“How about ‘Love Committee’?” Divina suggested. “After all, it’s Valentine’s Day.”
“That’s so boring.” Bianca rolled her eyes. “They’re all going to think we’re basic bitches, which although you are, I’m not. I think ‘Cupid’s Crew’ is better. It’s catchy and in line with the theme.”
“That’s a great idea, actually,” Xavier commented. He looked around the room. “Who votes for our team to be called ‘Cupid’s Crew’?”
Everyone raised their hand, including Divina.
“Okay, ‘Cupid’s Crew’ it is then.” Yoko impatiently tapped her pen against the floor. “Now can anyone come up with any activities?”
Just as Enid was about to reply, a new voice sounded across the room, one that she could recognise anywhere.
“We can put poison in drinks and make your loved one drink it, or stab them so that their red blood comes out. Red is the colour of Valentine’s Day, is it not?”
Wednesday materialised behind Enid, standing there expressionlessly and staring at everyone, seemingly having appeared out of thin air.
Divina screamed. “You nearly scared me to death! Give us a warning next time when you come in, will you?”
“There’s no need to insult me by emphasising the fact that I was not able to fully scare you to death. I am well aware of that already, and will do better next time.” Wednesday settled down beside Enid. “Continue the discussion, I don’t have the whole day.”
Enid could hardly believe her eyes, Wednesday Addams actually was joining a Valentine’s Day planning team.
“Wait, you’re really joining?” She excitedly grasped Wednesday’s hands, shaking it up and down. Realising what she had done, she quickly retracted her hand and hid it behind her back. “Sorry.”
Wednesday started to regret her decision to go. She wanted to just back out of the room, and say she didn’t want to join. But in the face of Enid’s sparkling blue eyes filled with hope, her mouth didn’t form the words she wanted it to. “Yes, I’m joining.”
Enid squealed. “That’s great! Thank you so much!”
Ajax looked at Enid with a fond expression on her face and Wednesday just had the urge to gouge out his eyeballs so that he couldn’t look at Enid.
They discussed a bit more about the activities they should organise, but Wednesday didn’t listen to any of it, her attention just on Ajax and Enid.
She noticed every single thing Ajax did to Enid, from subtly making his fingers touch Enid’s to looking at her with a disgusting lovesick expression that made Wednesday want to throw up.
She was broken out of her thoughts by Enid gently touching her shoulder. Ever since they defeated the hyde, there was a silent agreement that Enid could touch her sometimes, but still within her boundaries. She found that she didn’t quite mind Enid’s touches now.
“Willa, the meeting’s over. Shall we go back to our room? We can paint each other’s nails,” Enid said eagerly, holding out a hand for Wednesday to take as she stood up.
Wednesday was about to refuse and ignore the hand, but then at that moment Ajax approached Enid, his arm winding around her waist.
“I don’t think Wednesday would want to do that,” Ajax said. He gave Enid a smile. “But we can hang out in the coffee shop in town if you want.”
Enid’s eyes darted between the two of them. “Oh, uh, I…” she stuttered, not knowing how to complete her sentence.
Wednesday’s rage bubbled over like an overfilled cauldron. Who did Ajax think he was?
On the spur of the moment, she grabbed Enid’s hand and stood up, Enid’s eyes widening in shock. Her hand stayed firmly in Enid’s as she subtly moved in between Enid and Ajax and glared up at him. Although she was significantly shorter than him, she made up for it completely by the sheer amount of anger radiating from her.
“We’ll be painting nails, Ajax. Thank you for the kind offer,” she said coldly. She dragged Enid towards the door, ignoring Ajax’s disappointed look and Yoko taking photos of them while excitedly nudging Divina.
“Sorry, Ajax, maybe another day!” Enid called out, not making any effort to stop Wednesday as she got pulled away. Wednesday’s hand radiated a comfortable warmth, and Enid thought their hands fit exceptionally well together. She in fact thought she and Wednesday went exceptionally well together too.
And that night, instead of playing the cello, Wednesday started plotting out how to get Ajax away from Enid.
