It's Nice To Have A Friend

Summary:

A love story told in three arcs.

Notes:

Yes, its yet another fic based on the Taylor Swift song with the same title. Sue me. Its fluffy and you can pry this from my cold dead hands. So of course I had to put my own Wenclair spin on it.

I mainly did this to help out with some writer's block.

Hope you all enjoy!

Work Text:

They had been roommates for nearly a whole semester, took down a dangerous Hyde together, put their teacher behind bars for being the mastermind behind it all, and even hugged for the first time. But Enid still couldn’t break down the stone walls around Wednesday’s heart. Not even after saying they missed each other during their fight, nor their confessions when Wednesday had been expelled and they thought they would never see each other again. No matter how many times she would try to get Wednesday to say it, he raven would never admit their newfound friendship. It was clear as day to Enid and she would go around telling her other friends as such, but if Wednesday was present she would shut the notion down. It almost became like a game to Enid. One that she knew she could beat the other girl at.

As their unexpected extended winter break came to a close Enid couldn’t wait to get back to Nevermore. Sure, she liked being home, but she didn’t like being around her mother all the time. Her judgemental jabs at the blonde said regularly about many things. Her late blooming, the reason she wolfed out, her scars, her eating habits, her lack of werewolf behaviours etc. Esther never seemed to run out of things to comment on. That’s why Enid all but rushed up to her room in Ophelia Hall with her luggage after waving off her parents' offer to help and leaving them with the promise to see them next family’s day.

She was evidently the first person back in their room as there looked to be no sign of the raven’s belongings in the room yet. So Enid set about re-decorating her side of the room again and restoring it to its previous colourful and fluffy glory. It was as she was placing her suitcases away in her storage cupboard when the main door to the room opened again with the sounds of footsteps coming into the room. In her excitement, Enid ran out of her closet and into the main room ready to greet her macabre roommate, but was disappointed when all she could see was Lurch, the family butler. Her face fell and she turned back to her side of the room, and was shocked to see said roommate standing metres away from her.

“Jesus Wednesday you scared me! Wait, when did you get in?” Enid asked, confused as to how the raven was behind her when she came from the direction and swore she didn't see her anywhere on her side of the room. Wednesday lips twitched on one side, her version of a smile Enid came to deduce as she never saw the goth girl smile properly, before walking back to her luggage which had been placed by Lurch near her empty bed. Wednesday doesn’t say anything as she unpacks her things which Enid helps doing, the blonde filling up the room silence with her stories of being back home. Wednesday just nods along and asks relevant questions before delving into her own recap of what she got up to during the break, and the girls fall back into their rhythm they found before.

A week of returning to school normality had passed and Enid was already over everything. The waking up early, homework, the too many extracurriculars she signed up for, and catching up on her blog gossip. Everything. And her sleep schedule was paying for it.

That’s how she found herself dozing off against her hand during the admittedly boring herbology lesson. The lightest pattering of snow hitting the glass dome that was the classroom and conservatory could barely be heard set off Enid's sleepy state, and so did the teacher they hired to replace Thornhill, who lacked the same enthusiasm the psycho redhead had for the subject. It was the only time Enid wished Thornhill was still there. His droning and monotone voice did nothing to help keep Enid awake for their final lesson of the day so she was slowly slipping into the realms of sleep. Or she was, until someone by the name of Yoko nudged her arm so her head fell off her hand, and Enid was just able to stop it from banging off the table. She gave a look to the wolf under her dark sunglasses that conveyed the need for her to pay attention less they get into trouble, because although they were sat at the back it was a small room. Luckily, the teacher hadn't noticed as was instead turned to the chalkboard and drawing up diagrams whilst talking. Enid started copying from the board but very quickly got side-tracked by her roommate who was sat in front of her, the raven's back ramrod straight as usual with her head bent down over her notebook as she took notes. Never one to pass up the opportunity to mess with her roommate, Enid wrote a note and thought back to that one country song she heard.

Do you love me? Do you want to be my friend?

Yes                                No

[  ]                                 [  ]

Enid snickered to herself as she folded up the note and reached over to chuck it so it would land on Wednesday's book to be sure the raven would definitely see it. It had become a game in recent days for Enid to question the seer on their friendship and loved pushing the boundaries to get a rise from the other girl. Hence why she included the love question. Yoko rolled her eyes at the wolf antics but even she had to chuckle at it too. The folded up paper landed with a light thud against the book and Wednesday cast her eyes down at the intruding note. She turned her head slowly to face Enid, her face remaining unchanged as they made eye contact and Enid winked. Her head snapped back after that and she carefully unfolded the note to see what it said. Enid watched on from her seat at the note disappeared in front of the raven, as she was presumably writing her answer, and she eagerly awaited its return despite already knowing the most probable answer. Just as it was about to be returned, the teacher had turned back to face the class, so Wednesday placed it in her pocket for the time being.

The rest of the hour passed by too slowly for Enid's liking but she, and everyone else, was relieved when the final bell went and they began to pack up their stuff. The teacher harked on about homework he was setting and for everyone to take a sheet from the front before they left the room. Enid and Yoko were finalising their plans to a girls night the coming weekend with Divina and Bianca when Wednesday approached their table. She slid a copy of the homework on to Enid's desk as Yoko was leaving to get her own.

"Thanks Wends. Do you think I'd be able to copy some of your notes from the class? I may of uh, missed out on some things." Enid asked whilst folding the paper up to put in her bag and taking out her gloves and scarf to wear.

"Yes I did notice you were falling asleep. You may borrow my notes later during our study time."

The pair head out of the classroom when Enid was ready and walked through the quad to reach the other side of the school. Wednesday had promised Eugene she would stop by the Hummers hut to check on the hibernating bees and Enid offered to accompany her as they usually walked back to their dorm together after shared classes. It didn't take them long to walk out, check on the hives and start walking back, but out of the corner of Enid's eyes she could see the raven's reddened hands that were clenching and unclenching.

"Are your hands cold?" She asked.

"No, I don't feel the cold, it has no effect on me." Wednesday adamantly states.

"Wends I can see your hands are literally red. Here, you can borrow my gloves until we get back." She moves to remove her gloves when Wednesday rejects the offer.

"No, I'll be fine. Besides, you'll need them as you always complain about the cold."

"Its not my fault werewolves run hot.' Enid mumbles. "Look I don't want you to get frostbite and loose your fingers so please take them." She tries again, and she can see the shorter girl think.

"As much as that idea excites me I cannot afford to loose such preferred and valuable appendages. They come in handy for too many things, like writing and flaying the bodies of my enemies... Very well, I will take one but you must wear the other, lest I hear your whining on the way back." Wednesday relents and Enid agrees with the condition, smiling as she hands over the colourful clothing which makes Wednesday cringe. They continue the rest of their walk back to their shared room in comfortable silence.

It was later in the evening whilst each of the roommates doing their own thing after dinner, Enid was catching up on the herbology work she missed with Wednesday's notes, and Wednesday was writing her novel. Enid heard the raven's typing pause and before she could look over to make sure everything was okay, a piece of paper hit her head and landed on the floor and the clacking of Wednesday's typewriter picked up again. She bent over to retrieve the paper from the floor and noticed it was the note she threw in class earlier. Enid smiled and unfolded the note to see the reply.

Do you love me? Do you want to be my friend?

Yes                                No

[ 🗡️]                                 [  ]

Your wolf pelt will make a fine addition to the room.

I trust you will not speak of this with anyone.

In typical Wednesday fashion, there was a detailed drawing of a dagger in the yes box and a threatening reply. Her heart soared.

The next couple of days passed, by the apparent snow storm didn't, with relative ease for the girls and it was eventually the weekend. More homework had been set by different teachers but none that would cause either girl hassle to complete so Enid dedicated her Friday night to competing the majority of it, leaving more time over Saturday and Sunday for hanging out with friends without the stress of knowing she had work to do. Wednesday did the same but for different reasons. Eventually Enid was finished with her work so she flopped face first onto her bed with a sigh, before pulling out her phone to scroll through her social medias. She didn't like not having plans of an evening. Especially since Divina fell ill and Yoko was looking after her so they couldn't host the groups weekly sleepover. Enid sighed again as she changed apps for the third time. This garnered a reaction from Wednesday.

"Enid that is the fifth time in as many minutes that you have made that annoying noise. Will you do something about it?"

Enid huffs and kicks her legs on the bed. "I'm so boored Wednesday. Yoko had to cancel our plans because Divina got a stupid cold from swimming in the frozen lake for a dare with the Nightshades. She's such a fucking idiot sometimes."

"That's something I can agree with."

Enid sighs again. She hears Wednesday's chair scrape along the floor and her platform shoes, that she wears to be only just shorter than Enid, approach the middle of their room where the tape use to divide the two halves.

"What do you usually do on your... 'girls nights'?" Wednesday asks. Enid turns over so she's sat up on her bed now facing the raven, smiling at her as she does so.

"We chill out, watch movies, have mani-pedis, gossip about the student body, occasionally play some games like truth or dare or sims 4. Why?"

"That all sounds terrible... But, I wouldn't be opposed if we were to watch a movie together." Wednesday breaks their eye contact to look above and around Enid which the wolf knows she does when she's nervous about something.

"You wanna hang out?' Wednesday nods and Enid squeals. 'I would love to. Omg can we make a blanket fort?"

"We may. But I get to choose the movie."

"Deal."

The pair waste no time gathering their blankets and duvets and furniture to support their fort building, with Wednesday retrieving the rope she keeps in her trunk as an emergency to be able to string up around the rafters with Thing's help. Soon enough the middle part of their room becomes a mash up of the girl's belongings that have been used to make up the walls and roof for the fort, and their pillows and cushions with some blankets placed on the floor for them to sit against and snuggle into. The film Wednesday chooses is one that she knows will gross out her roommate because of all the gore, but she also chooses it because it contains some comedy aspects which she doesn't care for but knows Enid would. That film being a British film Hot Fuzz.

As she predicted, Enid complained at the scenes with blood and guts spewing out from various crevasses during gruesome the deaths. But one thing Wednesday didn't predict was Enid shuffling closer so she could turn her head into Wednesday's shoulder even though her hands covered her eyes. The first time she does it Wednesday's whole stiffens at the sudden contact, but as the films wears on she lets herself relax. Enid complains when the film is finished and Wednesday can't help but smirk, until Enid reveals they're watching a film of her choosing to make up for the torture she received. It was already late by the time they started the second film so inevitably both girls ended up falling asleep where they sat with the movie title screen repeating on the laptop nearby until the battery runs out. When morning came they both made the conscious decision not to talk about how they woke up with Enid's head pressed against Wednesday's shoulder, and Wednesday's head tilted to lean on Enid's so it caused them to make close eye contact when they awoke, and instead just went about like a normal weekend morning before taking down the fort.

It was the autumn term of their fourth and final year at college. Wednesday and Enid were still roommates but now they've been sharing a flat nearby to campus. It was still technically student accommodation as only students at their college lived there, but it was more of their own. They each had their own room but would still find themselves sleeping in each other's room almost nightly. It was just a thing that they did as it was what they were use to at Nevermore and from their first year when they stayed on campus in a twin room. Initially, they would give excuses as to why they needed to sleep in the same room, but now it had reached a point where one would walk into the other's room and get into bed without thinking. It all stemmed from that one movie night they had at Nevermore which set off a chain reaction.

One evening found the women up on the roof of their apartment complex, sat against the wall of the stairwell the leads back into the building. They weren't technically allowed to be up there, but being a wolf and an Addams made people not want to confront them. Wednesday brought up a couple of drinks for them and Enid insisted on bringing blankets for them to sit on a wrap up in despite the seers protests and being adamant it wasn't cold or windy. Their escapades to the roof only happened weekly and it became their place to talk about anything and everything about their weeks, or sometimes say nothing at all and just sit in quite and companionable reflection. It depended what mood Enid was in and whether she was feeling sociable that night. Tonight, Enid was feeling particularly talkative.

"And I just, ugh! It's frustrating y'know. Like it's been years since I've wolfed out but that's still not enough for her! Now she's trying to set me up with these randos despite me telling her I'm not interested, and quite obviously, already taken."

"I know."

"And it doesn't help that I'm already stressed the fuck out going into my final year. We've got so many assignments to do and I swear not enough time to do it."

"But you'll do great anyway mia loba, you're brilliant. It's just this year left then we're free from this miserable hellhole." Wednesday's words soothe her girlfriend's riling state enough so that her tense posture relaxes.

To help calm her some more, Wednesday reaches over and takes Enid's hand in hers and brings it up so she can place a light kiss to the back of the wolf's hand. She's unable to stop herself from placing more kisses there and slowly making her way up Enid's arm, placing featherlight kisses along her pulse point and up higher still, which makes Enid laugh from being ticklish. She tries to pull away but Wednesday holds her hand firm and pulls Enid against her so she can reach her shoulder and neck, nibbling slightly at the junction where the two meet, before placing the last elongated kiss to the blonde's lips. With the bite and the kiss happening in quick succession Enid gasps into the raven's mouth. Wednesday hums at the reaction and pulls away. Enid in return pouts and falls dramatically into Wednesday's lap so her head rests on the goth's thighs.

"You're mean." She mumbles.

"I know." Wednesday replies as she runs her fingers through Enid's hair, successfully making the blonde's pouting face be replaced with one of content.

"I think that's enough from me, how has your week been?"

"I must admit I too find myself particularly... Challenged, this year."

"Finals?" Wednesday hums lowly in reply. Enid nuzzles into Wednesday's stomach and places a kiss there before sitting up again, this time though she situates herself so she straddles her girlfriend's lap. Bringing her arms up to rest over the raven's shoulders and begin to toy with the wispy baby hairs that have fallen out from her braid. Wednesday's hands automatically find their place on Enid's hips as soon as she moves into position.

"You know what can help take our minds off of it?" Enid asks coyly and Wednesday raises her eyebrow in silent response, thinking of what usually happens when a question like that is asked when sat in their current position.

"We should play 21 questions! I'll go first!...' That was not what I was expecting, Wednesday thinks. 'If you could travel to any year in a time machine, what year would you choose and why?"

Wednesday thinks to herself for a moment. "2022... I would do more to stop your from getting hurt, by myself and... Him." She admits quietly. It had always been one of her biggest regrets seeing Enid get hurt by her words or actions, especially their first argument after being ambushed at the Gates mansion. Anytime she sees the permanent marks that litter Enid's otherwise flawless skin as a reminder from that night, she can't help but feel the crushing wave of guilt that knocks her off her feet like a tsunami and pulls her out to sea. To make up for it, every chance she gets since they first started courting she tells Enid how beautiful she is and how the scars were nothing for her to be ashamed of, and how they only make her love her more. Wednesday will do this for the rest of their mortal lives and beyond, but to her it will never be enough. Because Enid didn't deserve it.

"I would fight a Hyde every day for you if it meant I would keep you safe cara mia." Enid says softly followed by a kiss. She takes the opportunity during Wednesday's gasp (Enid talking in other languages always did something to Wednesday) to slip her tongue into the raven's mouth. Their kiss starts slow and soft, without urgency, but the pace steadily increases with every caress of their tongues, and bites on lips, and as Wednesday's hand roam all over Enid's body that begin to slip under clothes to scratch lightly at her pale skin.

"It's your turn to ask..." Enid tries to say between kisses as their lips part naturally to take breaths, but Wednesday is having none of it and instead places a harsh kiss to the blonde's lips before trailing down her jaw and neck. Enid moans break through her gasps as she feels the combination of teeth and lips on her skin.

"I don't want to play your insipid games mi sol, I just want you." Wednesday says into her paramour's neck between bites and kisses, leaving little faint red marks in her wake.

"You have me, το φεγγάρι και τα αστέρια μου , you always have me." They're both breathless as they continue until Enid pulls Wednesday down the floor and they become wrapped up in their own world up on the roof with the sun sinking down in the light pink sky, and they eventually make it down to Wednesday's bedroom to continue their night of passion.

"You may now kiss the bride."

The whole room bursts into cheers and whoops as lips met and became locked in a passionate embrace. Gomez can be hear faintly sniffing as he and Morticia wipe their tears, Thing was on a nearby table slamming his fist down on it repeatedly to make some noise, the whole Nevermore gang were either in the crowd on stood on either bride's side (Pugsley, Eugene and Bianca on Wednesday's and with Yoko and Divina on Enid's), and many of the important family members from both sides. It was a smaller ceremony only because they agreed to have a larger reception.

Everything was being held on an Addams family estate in the countryside so no one had far to walk between venues. By venues, they mean between the woods where they had the ceremony and the manor that was prepared for the reception and evening festivities. The brides led the procession through the cleared marked path hand in hand whilst their empty hands held their respective bouquets, both made up with a mixture of flowers the represent each of the women. The guests had lined the pathway and were throwing rice at the couple in lieu of confetti as per Enid's request. The Addams family may have gone overboard, as usual, so each member was chucking several handfuls that were getting stuck to raven and blonde hairs and littering the ground making it look like snow.

Once out of the woods and making the final stretch to the house, thunder rumbled in the distance as grey clouds loomed overhead. But neither woman were in a hurry even with the threat of rain. More family members and friends were waiting at the entrance to welcome the party into the grand hall. Enid and Wednesday split off from the main area to get changed into their second, and more comfortable, outfits they would wear for the remainder of the night. Another request that Enid had when finalising the details of the wedding day was for Wednesday to wear a suit for the evening events. So she quickly changed from her black lace formal dress to a fitted black blazer and slacks with a crisp white shirt that had the top two buttons undone, with gold personalised cufflinks with 'WS-A' inscribed. Wednesday always let Enid decide what she wanted to wear to their dates and big events, but for this she only asked for toned down or neutral colours as to not shock and blind the rest of her extended family who weren't use to such a colourful presence.

Eventually, with minimal distractions and promises of 'soon, later tonight', Wednesday and Enid re-joined their guests in the main hall and started on the dinner and festivities. They followed many traditional wedding rituals whilst incorporating the Addams family twists. Like a five course meal, but the main was an animal of the couples choosing and the 'groom' would cut off the first piece to give to their beloved. Speeches were given at intervals throughout the meal by the brides, their parents, and the designated maid of honour and best man, but at any time a knife could be thrown from the crowd or even the table. And finally, the father-daughter dance, but it would include a father and paramour-of-the-bride duel that would take place throughout the entire room and would only stop upon first spill of blood from the blade.

All in all, it was an eventful evening that didn't finish until the early hours of the morning when all the wine had been consumed, food that hadn't been eaten had been thrown during a food fight between the children (and some adults *cough* Fester *cough*) and after Wednesday serenaded Enid with a cello rendition of her favourite songs. Both women were tipsy from the drinking but Wednesday was worse off due to the amount of times Pugsley spiked her drink with various poisons, that Enid knew the Addams' were impervious to but it made them more likely to get drunk, so Enid carried up the many stairs to their room for the night. She kicked the door close before depositing the raven onto the bed and proceeding to remove Wednesday's clothes so she could be changed into her pyjamas.

"Hey I have a girlfriend you know and ssshe won't be happy with thiss." Wednesday slurs which makes Enid laugh at the fact that one, her wife was slurring her words, and two, because said wife didn't know she was the girlfriend.

"I know Willa, I'm your girlfriend." Wednesday's scrutinising eyes narrow at the blonde.

"You're bluffing." She says seriously.

"You got me there babe, I'm your wife."

"I have a wife? I must be sssoo lucky." Her eyes widen and her tone changes to one of amazement. Enid blushes and brushes her raven locks that have fallen from her meticulous updo behind her ear and lets her hand trail down her soft jawline.

"You are. But I'm the luckiest because I have you." Enid finishes with a kiss to the shorter woman's plump and red stained lips. It's short only because she still has to try and undress her wife to get her into bed before getting changed herself.

"Oh Enid, mon coeur et mon âme et ma raison de vivre, I love you so much."

"I love you too. Always have, always will."
