“I have to tell you something,” Jay whispered in the soft glow of the fading sunset that came through Matthew’s apartment windows, arms wrapped gently around Matthew’s waist where they sat curled against each other on the couch. Matthew leaned in close, his ear to Jay’s lips, and Jay drug his tongue up the entire side of Matthew’s face.
He jerked back in shock, trying -and failing- to be upset at the giggles that came from Jay’s mouth. “Jay, that’s disgusting,” he said, wiping the residual spit off his face, but he still leaned back in, allowed himself to be enveloped in the other boy's strong arms once more. Jay was still chuckling when Matthew reached up and swatted some hair out of his face. “You’re lucky I like you,” he muttered, and the silence that followed was so uncharacteristic that Matthew pulled back.
Jay was looking down at him, his deep brown eyes soft and affectionate, the slightest hint of a smile on his lips. “I love you, Matthew,” he said, no trace of a joke or a laugh in his tone. “You know that, right?”
Matthew’s face lit up with a blush so quickly that he had to avert his gaze. “Idiot,” he muttered, but the word held no malice. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Nothing,” Jay said. “I just thought you should know.” He pulled Matthew in close for a kiss, too short and too sweet, before placing his head back against the other boy’s chest. He brushed his hands through Matthew’s hair while they sat together, and Matthew’s heart hammered in his chest.
“I know. And I,” he started, and then frowned at himself when the words didn’t come as easily as he anticipated. “I’m also-“
“Yeah, I know,” Jay interrupted, and Matthew could hear the smirk in his voice, coated as it was in adoration. “I know.”
Matthew fumbled his phone from his pocket, scrolled through his music, and hit play. Frank Sinatra crackled from the speakers, and the silence of the evening was now filled with his gentle voice, crowing at the boys as they sat tangled with one another.
Jay snorted. “You and this song,” he chuckled, and Matthew couldn’t even argue it. His eyes slipped shut as the song played through, eventually fading out as the sun outside dipped below the horizon and cast the apartment into a comfortable darkness.
“For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you…”
