Silence. Warmth. The taste of her love still on her lips. Skin pressed against hers. Warm tuffs of breath on the back if her neck, making the hairs at the base of her hairline raise. A hand intertwined with hers resting on her chest, feeling the calm beating of her heart. The curtains shift and for a moment she pauses her sensory scan before remembering they had opted for open windows the previous night. The warm breeze blew through the curtains again. Summer. Today was the first day of summer vacation. Barbara smiles to herself, bringing the soft hand in hers up to her lips for a kiss.
“Good morning,” she says gently, doubting her counterpart can hear, as she figures she’s still asleep.
“Go back to sleep,” Ava mumbles, pulling Barbara back against her chest. “It’s the first day of summer vacation.”
Barbara turns over in the strong arms a that hold her. She studies Ava’s face for a moment, the sight of her bare faced, relaxed, and more beautiful than she’d ever seen took her breath away.
“Come. Let’s watch the sunrise on the porch,” Barbara proposes when she can breathe again.
“Noooo,” Ava whines, “too early. We finally get to sleep in.”
“I know, but I want it see the sun rise with you. We can spend the rest of the day in this bed. I promise.”
“How about we watch from the kitchen… and then we come back to bed,” Ava asks, peppering kisses along Barbara’s face and neck.
“Fine with me,” Barbara smiles. Compromise was something that over time she discovered that she and Ava did well. If surprised her at first because she knew that at school it was very much a ‘my way or the highway’ mentality from the both of them. But at home, they were able to listen to each other and find a middle ground.
Barbara sat up, stretched her arms above her head and made to get out of the bed, Ava following suit. Once downstairs, Barbara made them both coffee and set up post in front of her favorite window of the house. It sat right above the sink, and she could see the sky perfectly.
“Good morning, Lord,” Barbara whispered, “Come pray with me, honey.” Barbara held out her hand and Ava took it, both of them bowing their heads as Barbara said their morning prayer as she did everyday.
“…in Jesus name, Amen.”
“Amen.”
Ava picks up her coffee mug and stands beside Barbara wrapping an arm around her waist. They stand there just as the are and watch the sun come up and light their house in the most beautiful way.
“Thank you for indulging me this morning, Ava,” Barbara says, bringing Ava’s hand up to kiss as she had earlier on in bed.
“Always, baby.” Ava kisses her temple, lingering a little to let them both rest in the moment.
“Back to bed?”
“I’ll beat you there.”
