Work Text:
“Please Emily?” Garcia asked as she held the newspaper in her hand. Emily rolled her eyes as she knew there was no way she could stop Garcia. Whether she agreed to or not, her horoscope would be read. To think, just a few minutes ago she had been pleased when JJ and Garcia had walked into the bullpen, clearly determined to distract her from her paperwork. Now, she’d rather have the paperwork.
“I still don’t know how you can believe that crap.” Emily remarked as Reid glanced up from his novel.
“Well astrology has existed in some form or another for thousands of years. Babylonian astrology is the earliest recorded organised system of astrology, arising in the 2nd millennium BC.” Reid contributed before quickly ducking his gaze back into his book.
“So people have believed that crap for about four thousand years.” Emily summarised as Garcia shook her head furiously.
“No! It means that it has to have some truth if it’s lasted this long.” Garcia retorted as JJ shrugged her shoulders.
“She’ll read it anyway.” JJ commented fairly. JJ didn’t pay too much attention to hers, however the fact that her horoscope mentioned a ‘long journey’ did remind her of the ever growing pile on her desk. She had little doubt that the BAU team would be heading off to some random state either today or tomorrow.
“Heck yeah I will, now let’s see, Libra…” Garcia said as she scanned the page and cleared her throat in order to read it aloud. “A new opportunity may present itself; however you must be willing to view things from a new perspective or accept advice from friends or colleagues. You’re not always right, Libra.”
“So what? If I want a new job I just do this?” Emily commented sarcastically as she bent her neck, causing JJ and Reid to laugh and Garcia to sigh as Aaron emerged from his office, his coffee mug in hand, ready for a refill.
“Do I want to know?” Aaron asked as Emily straightened her neck and Garcia smiled eagerly at him. Had it been anyone else, he wouldn’t have let them read his horoscope aloud. However he always wanted to see Garcia happy and was therefore more likely to indulge her than the rest of the team. “Go on Garcia.”
“Thank you Sir, see Emily. Was that too hard?” Garcia asked and Emily rolled her eyes.
“Yes,” Emily replied simply as Garcia turned her attention back to her horoscope page. She knew Aaron was a Scorpio. November 2nd.
“Ok here we go,” Garcia said as she read the horoscope aloud for them. “Scorpio. ‘Get ready Scorpio, change is coming. You may meet someone who finds you truly delightful and who manages to get you to forget about your responsibilities enough to make you laugh.’ Wow!”
“I’m not sure about that Garcia,” Aaron stated as he turned towards the coffee machine. JJ and Garcia exchanged a look before they both looked over at Emily.
“What?” Emily asked. She knew that look. That look never boded well.
“Well, if you want some ‘advice’ from a ‘friend or colleague’,” Garcia began.
“I don’t.” Emily replied quickly.
“You are able to make people laugh,” JJ commented in a teasing singsong whisper. She was normally as sceptical as Emily when it came to horoscopes but there was something eerily spooky about both Aaron and Emily’s horoscopes today. What were the odds that both could be seen as a sign for the two idiots to finally make a move?
“I’ll make you fall out a window in a minute.” Emily retorted. “There’s your ‘long journey’ for you JJ.”
“It wouldn’t hurt. Maybe you really do need a new perspective.” Garcia quipped as Aaron rejoined them.
“A new perspective on what?” Aaron asked. Whatever it was, it had to be an interesting perspective if it actually brought a faint blush to Emily’s cheeks. The rosy hue making her look even more beautiful than usual.
“Emily doesn’t believe in the validity of horoscopes which is understandable. The interpretation of meanings within the alignment of planets and constellations has never been regarded as a definitive science.” Reid stated, offering Emily the unexpected lifeline she needed to get the others off of her back. Not to mention that since his birthday was a few days after Emily’s; they shared the same star sign and therefore the horoscope could apply to him. Which meant it was open to far too much interpretation. What could be viewed as an accurate rendition of the horoscope for one person might be completely unconnected to the experiences of another.
“Thank you.” Emily said gratefully. “See, Reid gets it.”
“Well, as enjoyable as this conversation has been, we need to get this paperwork completed. Strauss has already demanded to know why it’s not been completed yet.” Aaron stated to the rest of the team. Aside from Morgan, who was in Oregon in order to give testimony at the trial of an unsub they captured a few months ago; the rest had no excuse for slacking off on their paperwork. Strauss had been on the rampage twice already this week and only David Rossi was stupid/reckless enough to keep provoking the proverbial dragon.
The team exchanged a look before Emily and Reid turned their attention back to their files, Reid marking his page with his bookmark before he set it aside and both JJ and Garcia left the bullpen. As soon as they were out of eye and earshot of the bullpen, Garcia turned to JJ.
“It has to be a sign, a sign from the stars!” Garcia insisted as JJ led her towards her office. Whether it was a sign or not, it didn’t matter.
What mattered is that they needed a plan to get Aaron and Emily together and as much as JJ was loathe to admit it; they would need help from the guys if their plans were ever going to work.
After all, there was only so much pining from those two idiots that the team was able to take.
