Spirit: The Storms to Come

Summary:

Inspired by Erin Hunter’s works, Spirit is a series set in the fictional world of Warlin, a place devoid of humans and instead ruled by animals, taken both from reality and from mythology and fiction. I also feel compelled to mention that I started this back during 2017, literally the same year that Erin Hunter published Bravelands. I did not know Bravelands existed until I graduated high school in 2020, and so this is not based off or ripped off from Bravelands.

2023: Lmao I went years without touching this project. Before now, this has existed as nothing more than a sloppy fanfiction the size of a couple thousand words. Hmm, I have other things to worry about but... maybe I'll just rewrite it and put it up on Ao3. What could be the harm?

I then proceeded to spend the next three months rewriting the prologue, taking it from around 3k words to a 10k+ word monstrosity. Will I ever finish this? Probably not, but somewhere, someone has probably enjoyed this, and so up it will stay! (This needs to be a mandatory point in my digital footprint)

Anyways, I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Special thanks to Alex.

Chapter 1: Context for the Reader

Chapter Text

This book is heavily influenced by the various works of Erin Hunter, particularly the series of fantasy novels “Warriors”, which focuses on the adventures of animals, mainly cats, and are told entirely from their perspective. I haven't read anything from Erin Hunter beyond the first series (ITW - TDH), the first two or three books in the second series (I can't even remember it was like right after high school and I dropped them within a handful of months), and the first couple of Survivors books in my FRESHMAn year of HIGH SCHOOL, and since then I have not read any of the books save for Into the Wild last year (2024), so I am by no means an Erin Hunter authority or some kind of all-knowing superfan.

In short summary, Warriors is set sometime during the modern day in the United Kingdom. The story is centered around clans of wild cats living in the wilderness, and follows their lives, struggles and politics.

This project began as a small-scale work of fan-fiction based on Warriors, with major changes such as a new world that is absent of humans and instead is populated by a vast array of intelligent non-humanoid creatures, ranging from real ones like lions and deer, to mythical ones like dragons and unicorns. This world is called Warlin by the felines.

Among the countless species that inhabit Warlin, the cats are the most dominant. This series will follow the lives and adventures of various characters from multiple different clans.

For millennia, the Gatherings have been a time of community between the Great Clans, held during a truce lasting on the last night of every year. It has been nearly half a year since the last Gathering, ending in uproar for the first time in history. It is a time of uncertainty and vague, impending doom for the heroes we are soon to follow. Let's hope they can meet the challenges ahead... and the wars to come.
