It was a lazy autumn morning in Jackson. Ellie, Dina and JJ had just awoken.
“Can you deal with breakfast while we get prepared with JJ ?” Dina asked sleepily as she kissed Ellie on her cheek.
The latter nodded and padded over to the kitchen, still in her pajamas. It was known she wasn’t a great cook so she went with what she knew was achievable: pancakes.
She quickly gathered all the ingredients she needed and set to work. She mixed the batter until it was smooth, then heated up the griddle. The smell of the pancakes cooking filled the kitchen, and her stomach growled in anticipation. The desire to eat was slowly coming back, she noticed with relief.
As she flipped each pancake, she thought about how grateful she was to be here, at this moment, cooking breakfast for her lover and their son in their home, safe from danger.
Dina and JJ came to the kitchen just when she was piling all the cooked pancakes on a plate. She put them on the table and they all sat down then served themselves.
JJ smiled with delight when he took a bite of his breakfast and Ellie’s heart felt like it was going to explode with love.
“You like that?”
“Yes!” the boy responded, the smile on his face going up to his eyes.
Ellie grinned. “And what about momma?”
“Oh, you know I love it too. You should know that your pancakes are the reason I love you so much”, she joked.
Ellie looked at her, her hand on her heart and looking falsy offended.
“Ah! Should have noticed! You’re such a moocher…”
She got up to go to Dina and tickled her sides, quickly followed by JJ who also wanted to be part of the fun.
He climbed on Dina’s lap and helped Ellie with the tickling.
They didn’t stop until Dina was laughing her head off, gently pushing them away so she could catch her breath.
“You are both two little demons,” she managed to say as she wiped tears from her eyes.
“That you love so much!” added JJ.
“Right, two little demons that I love very much.” She corrected, then kissed them both.
