Sleep Schedules

Summary:

Wednesday and Enid attend the same university while they struggle with their work-life balance along with their opposing sleep schedules. Being in a relationship together only happens to be the cherry on top.

OR
Domestic and sleep deprived adult Wenclair fluff.

Notes:

I started making this while working between bigger projects as a way to get back into the flow of writing while giving myself a break from big plotlines and world building. I know I'm taking a while for updates, sorry! Hopefully this will serve as something to chew on while I get back into my workflow. Either way, hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!

Work Text:

Enid needed to sleep. She had to get to her morning class at nine and the clock on her phone read two-thirteen A.M.. If she fell asleep right now she’d get around 6 hours of sleep and still have an hour to get ready and make the walk across the campus to her statistics class. Her sleep deprived mind reminded her that she could cut the walk time in half if she wolfed out to get to class, but as tempting as that was, tearing up an outfit and freaking the majoring normie population on campus just to get to class faster was actually a terrible idea. Still she considered it for a little longer as she saw the clock on her screen tick another minute by.

She also knew that she should probably set her phone down and go to sleep, something about blue light keeping you up at night, a fact that Wednesday kept telling Enid was entirely debunked and baseless. Yet it still felt true, sleepless nights wasted away on social media and watching K-dramas served as proof. Trying to fall asleep was a miserable experience though, her mind would race through all the things that had to get done, and all the impending due dates that were quickly closing in. Her phone was just a way to forget about all that, but it only kept her up with meaningless videos and blog post deep dives.

A frustrated growl rumbled through her throat as she gathered enough willpower to set her stupid phone down on the nightstand. She rubbed her eyes and stared up at the ceiling. Nothing really helped her sleep these days, she even tried melatonin gummies but that only made her drowsy and turned her dreams all freaky. Well… nothing helped aside from Wednesday.

A girl who was all curses and storm clouds, she hardly smiled, often talked in a low and threatening monotone and carried multiple sharp blades on her person at all times. The same girl who was Enid’s only comfort on restless nights like these.

They both had heard it more than enough times, they were complete opposites. Enid was sunny days and rainbows while Wednesday was haunted nights and hurricanes. But that only made it more perfect in Enid’s mind. Eclipses were one of the most beautiful things one would ever experience after all.

Of course there was more to it than that, Enid was a Werewolf, Wednesday was an Addams, who also happened to be a psychic. They met at Nevermore high school, Enid fought a hyde for Wednesday, and Wednesday was the reason Enid wolfed out in the first place. It had taken some time for Enid to fully realize what that really meant, as she had been hiding so far in the closet that she actually convinced herself she had a crush on a boy. Could you believe that? She couldn’t, and she was the one who did it.

That had happened five years ago, and now she was in a three year relationship with a girl who kept actual skeletons in her closet while they both attended the same college together. Which reminded Enid that she needed to sleep but her favorite teddy bear wasn’t going to get home for another three hours.

Enid huffed as she flopped onto her back, a stray bang landed over her eye and she lazily blew it away. Maybe she should try doing that dumb military technique Wednesday told her to try. If melatonin couldn’t get her to sleep, she didn’t expect this to work, but she was kinda out of options at this point.

She closed her eyes and focused on relaxing every part of her body individually. First she relaxed her jaw, but not too relaxed because then she couldn’t breathe properly. Then she relaxed her shoulders, she hadn’t realized how tense they were until she did so, but it did feel nice to let them lower for once. Then next were her arms, fingers, and then her legs.

After a minute her limbs started to feel fuzzy, but she focused on her breathing and laid still. She still didn’t think it was working, but Wednesday had said that it would take at least fifteen minutes. So Enid started counting seconds in her head, ready to prove Wednesday wrong.

She didn’t even get to minute two before passing out.

Herbology usually sucked, Enid wanted to stay on task but she often found herself doodling in her journal instead of listening to the lecture. Nothing against plants and all, some of them could be beautiful, but the teacher’s droning monotone always made her mind wander. Her brain demanded some kind of stimulation and that resulted in the many speckled stars that lined every page of her notes. She knew it’d bite her on the ass the next time there was a pop quiz, but she couldn’t find in her to really care.

As she finished another small star in the corner of the page she felt someone’s gaze on her. It made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end but she couldn’t help but feel giddy as she knew what that reaction meant. She peaked to the seat beside her and was met with a beautiful dark stare. One that was seemingly unimpressed with Enid’s inattentiveness yet amused all the same. Not that Wednesday ever really smiled, but Enid had gotten pretty good at taking note of the small hints of smirks on the psychic’s lips.

Enid waggled her brows at Wednesday, only to be met with an exasperated eye roll. Enid lived for these small interactions, ever since the Crackstone scare she found that Wednesday had been less… prickly. She was still her usual dark and brooding, but there were moments when their eyes would meet and Enid was rewarded with a ghost of a smirk that made her insides twist.

”Is something the matter, Enid?” The pleasant feeling in her stomach dropped into dread.

Enid turned to the front of the classroom, where a familiar redhead woman stood. “Thornhill?” Enid’s eyes widened as her teacher’s smile grew disturbingly wider.

”You know if only you would pay more attention, maybe you wouldn’t have missed your opportunity.” Thornhill’s overly chipper demeanor only made Enid feel sick.

Enid gripped the table, her extended nails digging into the oak, “what?”

”Enid,” Wednesday whispered beside her, her voice ragged and hoarse and Enid had never felt such deep dread as she did then. She turned to find Wednesday still sitting behind her, but now she was riddled with bleeding slash marks and bruises. Her eyes were dull and foggy yet staring right into Enid’s soul. “Why did you leave me to die?”

Enid’s chair crashed onto the floor behind her as she nearly leaped backwards, “I-” She choked, suddenly the air in her lungs was gone and her heart felt like an anchor. She tried to breathe, but every inhale was shallow. She was drowning.

Enid shot up from her bed as she was yanked from another nightmare. Only to slam her forehead into something hard.

”Ow!” Enid reeled back in pain as she brought her hand up to her forehead. She then heard a creative string of whispered curses that made her realize that she wasn’t alone. She blinked away the remainder of sleep from her eyes.

She gasped as she realized that Wednesday stood before her, with one hand on her forehead and death glare pointed directly at the werewolf.

The drowsiness in Enid’s system was replaced with giddy excitement, ”oh my god, Wends!” She leaped forward and wrapped Wednesday in a clingy hug, entirely forgetting about the murderous glare she had just been given.

Wednesday’s center of gravity had been thrown off balance as she stumbled back into the beige wall. “Enid, calm down before you kill me,” she hissed, but Enid still felt Wednesday’s arms wrap around her middle, returning the hug.

Enid felt an instant pang of guilt as she leaned back to get a better look at Wednesday, “oh shit, I’m sorry.” She slipped her hands away from Wednesday’s waist and carefully cradled the psychic’s face. Wednesday’s braids and fringe were frizzy and a bit unkempt, she had dark circles under her eyes and her skin was somehow even paler than usual. She looked exhausted.

The edge of her lips curled up ever so slightly, that ghost of a smirk Enid was so familiar with, “We agreed that if you were to kill me, it would be a gruesome mauling, preferably in your wolf form.”

Enid’s nose crinkled as she frowned, “I never agreed to that.”

”Hmm,” Wednesday's shoulders dropped in disappointment.

Enid rolled her eyes, “I thought you weren’t getting out until five?”

Wednesday quirked a brow, “I did.”

Enid flashed Wednesday a quizzical look before twisting her back to reach for her phone without leaving Wednesday’s embrace. Once she snatched her phone from the nightstand she checked the time, finding that it was in fact five thirty in the morning. “Oh.”

”I just got back,” Wednesday hadn’t let go of Enid’s waist during the entire process of the werewolf grabbing her phone, if anything she had begun holding on tighter, “I came to check on you and found you writhing in your sleep.”

Wednesday’s voice was as monotone as always, yet she could see the worry in those dark and tired eyes. Enid shrugged and tried to brush it off, “oh, just a dumb dream. One of those ‘forgot your pants while at class’ kind of nightmares, you know?” She smiled sheepishly as she tossed her phone over her shoulder and onto the bed before setting her hands on Wednesday’s shoulders.

Wednesday was unimpressed, “you’re a horrendous liar. We have to work on that.”

Enid deflated a little, accepting defeat and instead leaned back in to bury her face into the crook of Wednesday’s neck. As Enid leaned forward, Wednesday had to bend back due to their difference in height. Enid had grown a little after wolfing out for the first time, but Wednesday had remained just as short as the day they had met. Not that either of them seemed to mind.

Enid clung onto Wednesday like the comfort teddy bear that she was, but as she took in a deep breath she was met with a mixed scent of vinegar and burnt ashes. She instantly recognized the smell and grumbled, “you smell like formaldehyde.”

Wednesday sighed, “I hadn’t gotten the chance to shower yet.”

Enid really didn’t want to let go of Wednesday, but she really hated that smell and there was no way she would be able to ignore it with how sensitive her nose was. She weighed her options before finally relenting, she gave Wednesday one more squeeze before pulling away from their embrace, “go shower.”

”Is that an order?” Wednesday teased as she raised a challenging brow.

Enid rolled her eyes and shook her head as she shooed Wednesday away, “just go.”

Wednesday let out an amused hum as she leaned forward and planted a quick kiss on Enid’s forehead. “Fine. Just know that I will get my revenge before the sun rises.”

”What?” Enid felt a nervous energy tangle with giddiness, “I didn’t mean to headbutt you, I swear it was an accident!”

Wednesday’s eyes narrowed dangerously, “retribution is inevitable Enid, consider yourself lucky that I chose to warn you beforehand.”

Enid huffed and gently shoved Wednesday away, “that’s so unfair! I was asleep, how was I supposed to know?” Despite the anxious feeling in her gut, she couldn’t help but smile.

That ghost of a smile returned as Wednesday took a step back, “unwittingly or not, we’ll all reap the seeds we sow.”

”Just go take a shower already,” Enid grabbed a pillow from the bed and chucked it at Wednesday, who despite looking dead tired still swiftly avoided it.

Wednesday let the pillow flop onto the floor before leaving the room, pausing at the door frame, “good morning, cara mia.” Her voice was hushed, and surprisingly soft.

Despite how often Enid heard that pet name, it never failed to make her heart rate quicken, “good morning, Wends.” She smiled as she watched Wednesday disappear around the corner.

Enid let out a tired sigh as she laid onto her back. She placed her hand over her heart, taking note of how quick it was beating as well as the nervousness that was bubbling in her stomach. With how Wednesday’s affections and cryptic threats affected her, she doubted she was going back to sleep anytime soon.

She checked her phone once more and took note that another few minutes had passed by. The sun wouldn’t rise for another hour, and her morning class didn’t start for another three. She had managed to sneak roughly four hours of sleep, which she figured would have to be enough for today

She pocketed her phone and quickly made the bed before leaving the bedroom. She stepped out into the small living space of their shared apartment. It was a pretty simple space, with a couch, tv and enough space for Wednesday’s cello and Enid’s colorful decor she had been collecting since she was a teen. Of which Wednesday would occasionally complain about, but hadn’t made a move to take down. Just like how Enid really didn’t like the full sized skeleton in their closet, but still let it be.

Their apartment was pretty small, but after sharing a household with her loud and annoying brothers, this place was a breath of fresh air. They could have gotten a bigger place if Wednesday had accepted her parent’s help. They had offered to cover all their living expenses while they were off at college, but Wednesday had turned it down in favor of being totally independent. Would have Enid done the same if she had been given the option? Probably not, but it's not like she could really complain either.

This place was theirs, their little pocket of the world that belonged to only them. Sometimes that was a little scary, but more often than not it was comforting.

Enid peaked through the curtains and found that it was nearly pitch black out save for the street lamps down the road. She then turned to the couch and let herself flop face first into it. She was glad she picked this one out, it was super comfy. Still she knew she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep so she shifted onto her back and pulled out her phone to distract herself with social media.

After about twenty minutes she heard the shower water turn off before the bathroom door opened. She was too engrossed in whatever video she was watching to notice Wednesday sneaking up to her until it was too late. Wednesday quickly moved over Enid, taking the phone from her hand and placing it on the black coffee table before taking a seat on top of Enid’s hips, straddling the werewolf in the process.

Enid’s eyes widened as she was suddenly met with a freshly showered Wednesday on top of her. She was in much comfier fuzzy black pajamas adorned with skulls and crossbones, which Enid had to spend weeks to convince the psychic to start using. While also wearing a black tank top that Enid was almost entirely sure she had initially belonged to her, as it was a little too big for Wednesday’s petite frame.

”Uh- Wends?” Enid felt her heart rate skyrocket again as she stammered.

Wednesday gently leaned forward into a tender kiss, her hands wrapping around Enid’s wrists and pulled her arms above her head. Enid didn’t even consider resisting as her brain had short circuited the second she felt Wednesday’s soft lips on hers. Then suddenly she heard a soft click and a zip as her wrists were suddenly pulled together.

”Mm!” Enid’s eyes shot open as she pulled away from the kiss, she looked up to find her wrists zip-tied together, “wha- you can’t be serious!”

This time Wednesday let a full blown smirk grace her features, “very.” She gracefully moved off Enid and stood back up before moving to the small kitchen.

”Wednesday!” Enid sat up as she tried to yank her arms apart in vain, “where’d you even get a zip-tie!?”

Wednesday didn’t bother to look at Enid as she turned on the kitchen light and retrieved her favorite black mug from the cabinet, “I have a few hidden around the apartment.”

Enid pouted, “you’re evil!”

”I’m surprised you’ve just now noticed,” Wednesday retrieved her french press from another cupboard and placed a pot of water on the stove to boil.

Enid tried to stand from the couch, but she was much less graceful than Wednesday, and having her hands tied together didn’t help. She stumbled a bit but eventually got herself to her feet before she joined Wednesday in the kitchen. She huffed as she began searching through the kitchen drawers, “I can’t believe you.”

Wednesday pointed to the furthest drawer to the left, “the scissors are in there.”

Enid mumbled a frustrated, “thanks,” as she retrieved the scissors. She tried to cut the zip-tie but the plastic was stubborn and she couldn’t get a proper grip, “you shouldn’t be drinking coffee, you’re supposed to be going to bed.”

”I have more business to attend to, I won’t be sleeping for another few hours.” Wednesday responded as she grabbed her expensive bag of coffee grounds and started pouring them into the press with a spoon.

Enid felt her bangs cover her eyes as she tried to get the stupid zip-tie to break, she tried to blow them away but they just kept obscuring her visions. Eventually she decided to give up on the scissors entirely, slapping them on the counter before extending her claws and trying to cut the plastic with them instead. “You barely get enough sleep as is, I don’t care that you’re an indomitable Addams, you need to sleep at some point, Wends.”

Wednesday poured the boiling water into the press before stirring it, “quite hypocritical coming from you Enid. How many hours of sleep have you gotten this week?”

Enid huffed, “enough,” she grumbled. She kept trying to wear down the zip-tie with her claws, but at this point it felt impossible and her knuckles were starting to ache. She decided to take a break for now, letting her claws retract as she pushed her hair away from her face, “still though. You just got back from your shift at the morgue and you look exhausted.”

”I find dissecting the recently departed to be invigorating, actually.” Wednesday retorted as she let the coffee steep.

Enid rolled her eyes as she stepped closer to Wednesday and grabbed the psychic’s hand with both of her own, “you need sleep, Wends.”

Wednesday paused for a moment as they stared into each other’s eyes. Her eyes looked a bit wistful as her brow furrowed, “I’ll sleep soon enough. Let me just enjoy this morning with you.”

Enid’s shoulders slumped, how was she supposed to argue with that? She sighed, “fine, just don’t over do with the coffee, okay?”

Wednesday looked down to Enid’s hands, “no promises.” She then reached behind her and pulled out a knife from god knows where, before cutting the zip-tie with one swift tug.

Enid raised a brow as she rubbed her wrists, “setting me free? I thought you were enacting your revenge.”

Wednesday tossed the broken zip tie into the trash and slipped the knife back into its hidden sheathe before turning to her french press. She placed the plunger at the top before slowly pressing it down, “it was starting to get pathetic watching you struggle.”

”Hmm,” Enid smirked as she hugged Wednesday from behind, she rested her head on Wednesday’s shoulder as the psychic continued to press the coffee grounds to the bottom of the glass. “I think you just felt bad for me.”

”I don’t appreciate your slander,” Wednesday responded as she finished her coffee and began pouring it into her black mug. Enid knew she always refused to add any sugar or creamer, but Enid still couldn’t understand how anyone could enjoy their coffee black.

Just as Wednesday was going to take a sip, Enid reached forward and snatched the mug from Wednesday’s hand. She received a pretty nasty side eye as she took a sip from the mug, her face instantly scrunching up due to the bitter taste.

”If you despise it so much, then why drink it?”

Enid chuckled as she handed the mug back to Wednesday, “cause I like stealing from you.” She placed a kiss on Wednesday’s cheek before pulling away.

Enid moved to the small dinner table that was only big enough for the both of them and took a seat on one of the wooden chairs. Of course Wednesday had picked out the most ancient looking gothic black wood chairs imaginable from some weird antique shop, but they were surprisingly sturdy so Enid enjoyed getting comfortable on them. Which meant throwing her legs over one armrest and letting herself lean against the wall beside the table.

Wednesday opened their small fridge and pulled out one of many bottles arizona tea bottles Enid would buy in surplus at the convenience store. Enid’s eyes lit up, “ooh!” She happily reached out as Wednesday placed her mug on the table and handed Enid her tea. She immediately twisted off the cap and started to drink and watched with curiosity as Wednesday stepped out of the kitchen, only to come back with a laptop. Enid’s brow furrowed as she set her tea down, “what’s that for?”

Wednesday calmly sat down on the opposite side of their table and set the laptop to the side before turning it on, “I have some assignments due by the end of the week. I can finish them now since I’m awake.”

Enid frowned, “I’m regretting teaching you how to work a laptop. I didn’t think you would use it to give yourself more work.”

Wednesday was already signing onto the university’s web portal, she took a quick sip of her coffee before opening up an assignment module, “I would have just taken normal classes instead.”

Enid glared at the laptop as Wednesday started typing. The psychic’s typing speed was ridiculously fast, she acclimated quickly to a keyboard, probably from using her typewriter all the damn time. “In person classes while working graveyard shift at the morgue? When would you have time to relax?”

Wednesday shrugged, “I’ll relax when I’m dead.”

Enid’s glare jumped to Wednesday, “oh hell no.” Enid stood from her chair and yanked the computer away from Wednesday before snapping it shut, “you don’t get to overwork yourself to death, Wednesday. You already promised me forever, and I’m gonna make sure I get my forever.”

Wednesday flashed Enid an annoyed glare, “I’m fine, Enid.”

”Nope,” Enid haphazardly tossed the laptop onto the couch, “you look like you’re about to collapse at any moment. I’m not ready to take you to a hospital if you do.” She moved around the table and pointed at Wednesday’s hands that had been typing just seconds prior, “you’re shaking.”

Wednesday glanced at her hands, her fingers did indeed have a slight tremble, she quickly hid them under the table. “Caffeine has that effect.”

Enid rolled her eyes as she pushed Wednesday’s chair away from the table so that she could straddle Wednesday’s lap. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and this is the one way Enid knew Wednesday wouldn’t dismiss Enid’s concerns. “Babe, just admit you’re tired. When’s the last time you slept? And not some thirty minute nap, but like actually slept?”

Wednesday’s hands naturally settled onto Enid’s hips, a tinge of red found its place on her ears as her eyes were glued to Enid’s, “I-” she closed her mouth and furrowed her brow, her eyes focusing as she refused to stumble through her words, “I slept before my previous shift.”

”This last shift?” Enid asked.

Wednesday stared at Enid’s for a beat before admitting, “the one before that.”

”You haven’t slept for twenty four hours?” Enid was astonished.

”Technically thirty six.”

Enid’s shoulder slumped in disbelief, “you’re absolutely nuts.” She shook her head before standing back up and turning around to take Wednesday’s mug from the table.

”That’s mine,” Wednesday objected but remained seated.

Enid shot Wednesday a stern glare, “you’ll be fine. I’ll buy you more.” She then walked to the sink and dumped the rest of the coffee and left the mug there.

Wednesday stared at the sink a bit dejectedly as Enid returned.

Enid shook her head, “god you’re such a baby.”

”I’ll kill you,” Wednesday retorted.

”Yeah, yeah,” Enid replied dismissively as she pulled Wednesday’s chair further from the table so that she could lift the psychic into a bridal carry. Wednesday was pretty light, and Enid’s Lycan strength made picking her up almost effortless, “I’m taking you to bed.”

”Enid,” Wednesday warned, yet her glare lost some of its edge as she linked her hands around Enid’s neck, “put me down.”

”No,” Enid stopped briefly to turn off the kitchen light before carrying Wednesday to their room.

Wednesday glared up at Enid as she was set down on the bed, “I’ll just get back up.”

”Nope,” Enid sat back down on the bed before pulling the covers over both of them, “I won’t let you.”

Wednesday turned to glare at the ceiling, “you have to go to class in an hour.”

”I’m skipping,” Enid shifted to get more comfortable, lacing an arm around Wednesday’s middle and laid on her side to keep her stern glare on the psychic.

”You left your phone on the table,” Wednesday tried.

Enid pulled her life size gothic teddy bear closer, “don’t care.”

Wednesday huffed and must have finally accepted her fate as she didn’t make another comment after that.

It took them both a few minutes, but they both eventually fell asleep. After waking up twelve hours later Enid would have found out that her classes had been canceled because of stormy weather. She then forced Wednesday to call in and use one of her P.T.O. days that she had “forgot” to mention she had.
