Katsuki looked at the pregnancy test. Well, technically he'd been looking at it, but his vision had clouded so much that he was looking through it at that point. He hadn't moved in well over ten minutes. Time might as well have stopped with how deep in his head the blond was, mind racing with a myriad of thoughts. Sitting on the toilet with the seat down, the test balanced precariously between his thumb and forefinger, his hand trembling lightly. His glands were pumping out a conglomeration of scents, from confusion to fear to elation and absolute terror.
There was no mistaking the result.
'Positive' it said in block letters through the clear screen on the test. The ten tests he'd taken before this one, all of different brands and types, had the same result.
Katsuki was pregnant.
This was not how he expected his birthday to start. Pulling the stick into his hand, he clutched it loosely while folding over himself, resting his head in his arms as they wrapped around his body, and he cried.
~~~
See, this pregnancy wasn't supposed to be possible. Sure, logically speaking and in the grand scheme of secondary genders, it was. He was an omega, and his mate, Eijiro, was an alpha. They had the sexual reproductive parts needed to create a pup and a healthy and very active sex life.
They had bonded years ago, right after signing their pro-hero contracts after graduation from UA. At that time, Eijiro had signed with Fat Gum and Katsuki, begrudgingly, with Endeavor. Once their careers were stable and they rose into the top ten, Katsuki and Eijiro formed their own agency, DynaRiot. They were unstoppable, unbeatable, and somehow along the way they became the country's sweethearts.
Things were going perfectly in their lives. Their careers were on fire, they were completely head over heels in love with each other, everything was great.
Once their agency was up and running and all the kinks had been worked out, the couple decided to try for pups. They were both young and healthy, and obviously the 'trying' was the best part. So when they didn't get pregnant after their first heat/rut, it was no big deal. They just kept trying.
They tried through their second and third cycles...nothing.
Third and fourth? Nada.
They tried for two whole years, and still, Katsuki wasn't pregnant.
Every single time, Katsuki could see the sadness in his mate's eyes. Sure, the alpha tried to hide it, but Katsuki knew. He could smell the disappointment in his lover's scent, he could see the redhead's smile dull just a little more every single time. Like a light bulb that was slowly dying, so was their hope of conceiving.
Sometimes he'd have a headache, or his nipples would be sore, or he'd feel nauseous, and he'd get so damn excited. He always kept a stash of tests in the bathroom of their apartment. Shit, the amount of tests he'd taken over the last several years was astronomical.
Every single one said 'Negative' or showed the stark single line.
Not pregnant.
He was a failure.
Eijiro had talked about how much he loved kids and couldn't wait to have pups of his own clear back in their UA days. Katsuki always guffawed or scoffed with a 'Tch' and pushed the thought away. The flicker of heartbreak in his then-boyfriend's eyes made him feel guilty, but at the time he couldn't see himself as a parent. A mother. He couldn't see himself having to care for a whole ass human being, changing diapers, feeding them, cleaning up snot and vomit. He shuddered at the thought.
Hell, If asked, he wouldn't even be able to pinpoint when the the thoughts began to shift from 'fuck no' to 'maybe' to 'what if' to 'wait, I really do want that'.
It just... changed. He could still picture the look on Eijiro's face when he told him that maybe, just maybe, they could have a pup. The larger man pulled him into a tight hug, practically sobbing.
If a few tears shed from Katsuki's eyes as well, nobody needed to know.
They made love that night, whispering sweet 'I love you's' and soft 'thank you's' back and forth. Katsuki couldn't help but feel like there'd been a shift in the dynamic of their bond, somehow strengthening something that was already so incredibly unyielding.
So after their years of unsuccessful attempts, Katsuki made an appointment with the doctor. What he didn't do, however, was tell his mate about it, and when he found out the test results, he was glad he hadn't. About a week after his appointment, the doctor called with the results. Katsuki only heard about half of what he explained, but the long and short of it was that their lack of conception was Katsuki's fault. Specifically, something about his quirk's effect on his body's ability to produce eggs, though that's the part when he started to tune the man out, too lost in the fact that he'd never be able to carry a pup.
In essence, his quirk, one of the best things that had ever happened to him, was to blame for something that was now the worst.
His irrational brain took over that day, and he spiraled into thoughts that were not only preposterous but slightly maniacal. Thankfully, he'd taken the day off and wasn't on patrols, because by the end of the day he had himself convinced that Eijiro would leave him if he found out, off to search for a proper omega who could give him the pups he deserved. The anxiety medicine that the doctor had prescribed a long time ago - though slightly outdated since Katsuki refused to take it at the time - helped to calm him and he was in bed sleeping when his mate came home that evening.
He just needed to move on.
Another month went by, and Katsuki didn't have the heart to keep his mate in the dark any longer. It wasn't fair to him whatsoever. Over dinner one night, he confessed his trip to the doctor as well as the results. He hung his head in shame, staring unseeing at his untouched plate. He waited silently for when his mate would stand and leave, disgusted with the blond for having kept this from him. He waited for the man to walk out on him, knowing now that the likelihood of Katsuki being able to provide his mate with his dreams was gone.
But instead of sighs of disappointment, harsh words of rage, or slamming doors, he instead felt himself being pulled onto his mate's lap right there at the dining room table. With his legs straddling his lover's hips and his face so close to his neck, he expected to smell anger, discontent, and regret...but he didn't. He smelled comfort and peace and love, and it enveloped him just as much as his mate's arms did, so much that he buried his face into the redhead's neck, pulling in slow deep breaths and letting his scent completely shroud him, wrapping him up into a blanket of warmth and security.
He should have known that nothing, even his inability to provide a biological pup for the man he loved, wouldn't sway the redhead's love for him. But feelings are stupid and almost never make sense to Katsuki, and in his emotionally burdened state, they felt like the truth.
Almost nothing changed between them after that. Their lives continued on, they both continued to pour their hearts and souls into heroism, even taking on a couple of interns from UA. Eijiro was super excited about one of them, a girl whose quirk was actual quirk canceling. It was incredible and had so much potential in the future of fighting villains. He couldn't shut up about her for months prior to her coming on board. Katsuki didn't mind her, though she talked way too much and still had a lot to learn with controlling her quirk - as was proven when she accidentally hit Katsuki with it during patrols one afternoon instead of the petty thief they were fighting. Since the effects of her quirk lasted varying amounts of time, Katsuki was relegated to desk duty for almost two weeks. It would've been fine if his quirk didn't come back right on the cusp of his impending heat, leaving him extra bitchy and altogether pissed the fuck off. Three weeks off of patrols? Katsuki was fucking livid.
Eijiro was a champ though, always had been when dealing with Katsuki's volatile moods. His rut had synched up with Katsuki's heat even before they'd graduated from UA, so it was only a matter of hours before they were both tangled up in the sheets together. Thank all the gods for the fact that - after many noise complaints from neighbors when they first moved in - they'd paid to have soundproofing installed throughout their apartment.
That was about eight weeks ago. And now Katsuki was staring at a positive pregnancy test, something he'd never thought would be possible. When he leaned down, tears leaking from his eyes and rolling over the sides of his arms, they weren't tears he ever expected to be crying. His fear wasn't for himself, it was for the safety of the baby. His confusion wasn't because he didn't know what he was going to do being pregnant as a pro-hero, it was because how did this even happen? How was it even possible? And finally, his elation was because he had a pup growing inside of him.
He had a pup growing inside of him.
Part of him and Eijiro had come together to form this perfect little human and, with more tears springing from his eyes, he was beyond happy.
He floated through the early morning in a cloud of disbelief and even if for a brief moment, allowed himself to be cautiously optimistic. The last couple of weeks he'd been feeling... off. Nauseous in the mornings, extra fatigued, sore nipples. It wasn't anything he hadn't felt before, especially because sometimes his omega hormones went a little crazy. But just for the hell of it, he decided to test. He'd had a few left over from before, and even though he'd promised himself he would stop testing after he found out he couldn't conceive, why throw away a few tests? He'd paid for them, there was no reason to toss them if they hadn't expired, after all.
When all three remaining tests came back positive, he quickly threw clothes on and jogged to the pharmacy a couple of blocks from their apartment. It was barely after 8am at that point and the store was gloriously empty, with only the cashier to witness him buying one of every single test on the shelves, eight in total. Despite his shoddy disguise of a face mask and baseball hat, he was sure the woman could smell his anxious scent and was somehow making judgments of him. He barely held off the urge to flip her off.
Back at the apartment and all the tests taken, he was far past being in shock. The blond hero thanked all the gods that were listening that his mate got stuck covering early morning patrols because suddenly Katsuki shit to do.
First, he put in an emergency call to his doctor's office. Not usually one to use his hero status to get what he wanted, this was no ordinary time, so he politely (read: he used much less of the f-bomb than usual) requested them to schedule him an appointment NOW, and slightly surprisingly, they obliged.
One blood test and a physical examination later, it was confirmed. He was carrying a pup. His HCG levels were phenomenal for where he was in the pregnancy.
"But...how?" Katsuki's disbelief was evident as he raked his fingers through his hair for the tenth time.
"Ahh Bakugo, I told you it was unlikely that you'd conceive, not impossible. My guess is the quirk that your intern hit you with temporarily aided your body in what it should be doing prior to a heat, producing many eggs in hopes that a sire comes along. Without your quirk there to shut it down, your mate...well, you can figure out the rest," the man said with a chuckle.
Before Katsuki left, he was scheduled for an ultrasound in one month. Only one month until he could see his pup! Once out the door, he checked his texts, not surprised to find a myriad of messages from his mate. They were an array of birthday wishes, emojis and gifs, and one telling him he can't wait to give Katsuki his birthday present.
Katsuki texted back 'I have something for you, too,' before shutting off his phone to wipe out any further temptation to divulge more information before that night.
The blond had some shopping to do before going home. First, he went to a store that carried a huge selection of hero merch, and he perused through his own merch before moving to Red Riot's. He looked through hoodies and hats, lanyards and pins, even little plush Riot dolls, before finally finding the perfect gift. The tiniest of Red Riot onesies hung on small little hangers, and as soon as Katsuki saw them, his breath caught in his throat. That was it.
He bought one in the newborn size as well as a small little gift bag in which to wrap it before heading to the grocery store. As much as he'd love for Eijiro to cook him a birthday meal, there were a few reasons why that wouldn't happen. First, the other hero had patrols all damn day and was sure to be worn out by the time he got home. Second, while his cooking had marginally improved since their school days, it still wasn't up to Katsuki's high standards, especially for today. In light of the current circumstances, Katsuki wanted a goddamn feast tonight, a celebration of so many things, and there was no one better than him to prepare it.
~~~
Several hours and so much food later, he was plating their meals with shaky hands when his mate walked through the door. Almost immediately, strong arms wrapped around him from behind and Eijiro's mouth was against his gland, inhaling deeply. "Katsuki, it smells delicious... and so do you," he chuckled. "I got something for you," he added, shaking a little box in front of Katsuki before setting it on the counter and kissing his cheek. "Did you know you're one of the hardest people ever to buy for?"
"M'not," Katsuki said with a soft grin, forgoing the box for now. "Let's eat first, yeah? I have something for you, too." The blond knew that if he were to tell Eijiro now, that there would be no eating happening and outside of the morning sickness, he'd already noticed an increase in his appetite lately. He was far too hungry to put off this meal any longer.
"Kaaats," he said, drawing it out like the cutest little pout. "I already said, it's your birthday, not mine, why'd you get me something?"
"Because today, it's both of our birthday's, damnit." That's all he was going to say, even with the protests that followed from the redhead.
They shared small talk and delicious food over the next half hour. The sounds of silverware clanking on plates, sipping sounds of tea and water, and Eijiro's laugh filled the small dining room. It sounded like home and made Katsuki's chest warm with love and hope and happiness. With the cover of the table to hide it, Katsuki couldn't help but rest his hand on his belly. He knew it was too early to have a baby bump or feel anything, but... he still felt a connection to the little pup already.
When the meal was complete, Eijiro stood to wash the dishes, as that was their normal routine on nights they were able to eat together. But Katsuki couldn't wait any longer.
"Ei, wait," he said, standing and pulling the small gift bag from where he'd stashed it behind his work bag by the door.
The confused look on his face was adorable, and Katsuki's foot tapped impatiently as he waited for the redhead to open the bag. He watched intently as he his mate pulled the tissue paper out and set it aside before pulling out the small piece of clothing. Katsuki had folded it up in order to make it fit in the bag, so the look of confusion on his mate's face just deepened. All he saw was a soft cotton cloth made of black and red. When he opened it, the look remained as he stared at it. He blinked once. Twice. Katsuki could almost see the gears turning in his lover's head as he processed what it was that he was holding.
"Kats?" His mate finally looked up, red meeting tear-glistened red, and Katsuki smiled. "Is this...?"
And his own wet eyes and soft grin, he looked lovingly at his mate and uttered the three words that he'd been thinking of all day long.
"Happy birthday, Baby."
