Work Text:
Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up in a strict orphanage, where she had to clean for hours and hours, and was regularly punished. At age 7 she randomly had the worst pain of her life, it felt like she was about to die. It eventually stopped and she had no idea why that happened. A few weeks after that, she felt more pain, less severe this time. This continued for years. One day after she was recovering from being poked with a burning hot stick, she felt the same thing happen a bit above her stomach, why was this happening to me? She wondered, and eventually got her answers when she turned 17.
At 17, the leader of a group called the guild rescued her from the orphanage. She learned much of the outside world, including that people have soulmates and can feel their pain. That explained how much pain she felt through her childhood, but that meant her soulmate also grew up in the same conditions as her. She hoped that after the guild’s plan was done, she could find them and save them from the terrible place they live.
19 year old Lucy met a peculiar boy who could turn into a tiger. She was almost killed by him, but at the same time, he didn’t seem like one to kill. He seemed kind and sympathetic. Lucy pondered this as she helped around on the Moby Dick, until the tiger boy was captured.
Lucy started talking with him, yelling at him, until he showed those marks. The same place that that pain had stuck, that oh so familiar pain. Why? Why is he her soulmate? He wasn’t good looking, he had stupid bangs and a cute smile…. Cute??? She started to question everything she knew. She dreamed that her soulmate would be beautiful and caring. But isn’t he all of that? She thought as he jumped out of the ship.
As the guild members escaped, she could feel the pain he was in right now fighting Francis. He’s gonna die… she thought. Until they saw The Moby Dick crash into the water.
Weeks later, she met Atsushi again and she ran. Why can I only be mean to him? She thought. It didn’t help that he was oblivious, he would never understand the way she feels. The way she feels??? It’s not like she had a crush on him, definitely not!
One day, she ran into Atsushi while doing some errands, and she, of course, ran. But this time Atsushi ran after her, just wanting to understand why she hated him. She ran all the way to the side of Yokohama that the Port Mafia reigned after.
Once she thought she lost him, she sat down, catching her breath. As she got up, out of the shadows a random criminal with a knife tried to stab her, only grasing her cheek. As the blood ran down, Lucy kicked the criminal. And she used the self defense lessons she had been getting from Yosano to make sure the criminal would never mess with her again.
Walking down the street, cut still fresh, looking for a shop to get a bandage, she looked at Atsushi. Wait what? When had Atsushi caught up with her?
“Lucy!” he said as he ran over to her, “Are you okay?”
“Of course I’m not okay, idiot,” Lucy responded, “U can feel the pain, so be smart for one second.”
“What do you mean?” Atsushi asked. Shit. She didn’t mean to say it, but before she can explain away he figures it out.
“Are we… Soulmate..?” Fucking shit. Lucy almost ran but Atsushi firmly grabbed onto her wrist.
“YES!” She finally snapped, “ WE’RE SOULMATES AND I HAD TO DEAL WITH YOUR STUPID TIGER ASS GETTING TORTURED ALL THE TIME! AND I’M SORRY THAT I DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING BUT U SHOULD’VE FIGURED IT OUT BY NOW. ALSO STOP GETTING HURT ALL THE TIME, I CAN’T STAND IT. NOT JUST BECAUSE I HAVE TO FEEL IT BUT ALSO BECAUSE I FOR SOME REASON CARE ABOUT YOU!”
Shit, did she just say that? She basically just said that she liked him, fuck.
Atsushi looked at her with a surprised look on his face and for a second she thought that he didn’t feel the same. Because how could he? She’s mean to him and just yelled at him. But then he spoke:
“I like you too,” he almost whispered. What? Did she hear that right? No way, right? “Lucy, would it be all right if I kiss you?”
Before Lucy could even think she said yes. Atsushi moved towards her, how had she not noticed before how beautiful his eyes were? Lucy moved forward too until their lips touched. She was not ready for this, she had no idea how to kiss, but she didn’t care, neither of them did.
As the sun set on Yokohama, you could see a white haired boy and red haired girl walking hand in hand down the streets.
