Gentle Waves Bring Sweet Dreams

Summary:

Nightmares plague the Chain often another Hero always there to help them recover. Sky sings Wind a lullaby after a nightmare filled night the sounds of music and a comforting story can be quietly heard around the campfire.

Notes:

I used the song "Come Take a Trip in my Airship" by Natalie Merchant for the lullaby. It's a song I grew up with that used to help with my own nightmares. Enjoy the fluffy story.

Work Text:

Quiet songs of crickets sing through the grass surrounding the sleeping heroes, the gentle lullaby of nature enough to keep them in dreamland. Some look peaceful as they sleep. Legend and Warriors were sprawled together both would deny it come morning Sky is sure, Hyrule was resting against the tree Sky saw Wild climb earlier Hyrule’s blanket more on the forest floor than on the traveler. Time is barely visible beyond the snoring lump by the fire; the only hint of Twilight next to him is the fur pelt covering the rancher’s head since Twilight sleeps on his stomach. Four and Wind also bunched together Four couldn’t seem to decide whether he wants the blanket on or off in his sleep. The sailor however, seems to be tossing and turning in his sleep a deep frown on his features muttering quietly in his sleep. Concern quickly spreads on the chosen hero’s face with the nightmare Wind seems to be stuck in, Sky silently sets Fi down, padding over to Wind. Sky leans down quietly whispering Wind’s name a couple times trying his best to not touch the teenager in order to avoid a dagger to a limb.

“Wind? Wind, can you hear me? Link are you ok?” Receiving no response from the teen only further tossing and turning before suddenly lurching forwards eyes blown wide his breathing stuttering and panic filled. Wind’s eyes dart around the small clearing before finally landing on Sky, the tension in his shoulders lessening slightly.

“Hey you’re alright, it was just a bad dream Link you’re safe now” Sky keeps his voice soft so as to not startle the already fragile mindset Wind is in at the moment. Wind’s eyes are unfocused but remain settled on Sky for now as the first moves carefully towards his own bag grabbing the small harp ushering the smaller hero over by fire. Reluctantly, Wind slowly rises stepping over several of the other heroes cautiously sitting on the mossy log by the fire next to Sky who scoots him close, wrapping Sky’s precious sailcloth around Wind’s shoulders.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Sky asks softly, receiving a quick head shake of no almost right away from the younger Sky nods in understanding.

“Do you want to hear a story then? Get your mind off whatever it was that woke you?” The chosen gives a gentle smile holding up the harp getting a small nod as the younger snuggles deeper into the sailcloth.

Sky plucks quietly at a few of the strings, being careful to not wake any of the others before taking a deep breath almost silently singing an old lullaby.

“I once loved a sailor once a sailor loved me. But he was not a sailor who sailed on the wide blue sea. He sailed in an airship, sailed like a bird on the wing and every evening at midnight he would come to my window and sing.” Sky’s voice sounds like honeyed milk warmed by the fireplace on a rainy day, the sound comforting to Wind as he  slowly scoots closer to Sky on the log leaning his head on his shoulder.

Sky gives a small surprised look before smiling and continuing with his story,

“Come take a trip in my airship, come sail away with the stars. We’ll travel to Venus, we'll sail the way to Mars. No one will see as we’re kissing, no one will see as we spoon, so come take a trip in my airship and we’ll visit the man in the moon.” Sky’s story reminds Wind of one Grandma would tell him and Aryll one of an adventurer sailing the sea helping those in need all for love. Back then Wind would stick his tongue out in mock disgust and yet he still clung to every word as if it would fade away if he didn’t. The memory brings a smile to his face, the sound of Aryll’s giggle fading into his mind as Sky continues his story of love and the sky.

“One night while sailing away from the crowds we passed the milky white way. While idly drifting and watching the clouds, he’d asked if I’d name the day. Just by the dipper I gave him my heart and the sun shown on our honeymoon. We swore to each other we never would part and we’d teach all the babies this tune. Come take a trip in my airship, come sail away with the stars.” Wind’s eyes were growing heavy once more trying to keep his eyes open feels as if there’s a rock on each eye. The comforting smell of a flower Wind can’t quite place mixed with Sky’s smell of fresh laundry and rain, Sky’s voice being gentle barely above a whisper telling the story almost humming Wind is reminded of his grandmother soothing him or Aryll after a scary dream. Grandma always says she’ll chase the bad dreams away so they wouldn’t have to be scared Wind closes his eyes thinking of his grandma with her trusty broom shooing the monsters away. The gentle tune and hum of a story still playing in his mind.

Wind’s breathing grew steady on Sky’s shoulder he pauses his tune, a tired smile on his face as he ruffles Wind’s hair gently pulling the sailcloth tighter around both of them, his eyes growing heavy as he whispers one last sentence.

“Sweet dreams Link, I’ll keep you safe from nightmares.” He mumbles resting his head on top of Wind’s, the lull of sleep too great to ignore. Gentle waves on the distant ocean often bring honeyed sweet dreams to the minds of those that care to listen.
