Shower Thoughts - Author's Commentary

Summary:

Author lets readers pick her brain on the last three installments (Hell Is Round the Corner, Ghosts In the Belfry, Love Is A Parallax). Discussion topics include: characters, themes, inspiration, music, plot progression, Easter eggs, Waiver relationship, Q&A, ect.

Notes:

You guys said you would be cool with an author's commentary, so here it is! This is all just an unedited stream of consciousness written as part of my daily journaling. I'm titling this Shower Thoughts because these are literally ideas I've had while showering. That's where I do some of my best thinking lol.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Where It All Began

Chapter Text

Hey there! Here's my shower thoughts of the day:

How I Found My Way to AO3:

I'm literally being a broken record when I say this, but I did not plan to be here. When I started, I didn't think anyone was going to like it. I had an idea that wouldn't go away so I figured why the hell not get back into writing FanFiction. 2022 was single handedly the worst year of my life (so far) and I needed a distraction. Something to get lost in and forget about the dumpster fire that was consuming my life. I always thought I would post a few chapters, a couple people would read it and be like eh, and then I would slowly stop writing. Honestly, if it wasn't for all of you amazing readers, I wouldn't have the confidence to keep going. In every chapter I dig deep and pour my heart out and I'll think no one is going to like this bullshit, and by the grace of whatever is out there, you somehow like it.

That being said, let me tell you how we got here.

At first, I had no interest in the show. The teaser poster for the new cast of the Addams Family did not impress me at all. I HATED the casting, particularly Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia. Her costume was too bland, her portrayal was flat, and she had zero chemistry with Luiz Guzman. I also didn't like what they did to Pugsley's character. There's no way he would be practically crying after being hogtied in a locker with an apple stuffed in his mouth. Wednesday does way worse to him at home - what the bullies did was child's play. Jenna's acting was the saving grace for me. If she didn't own that role, I wouldn't have kept watching. I actually wasn't convinced to watch the show until I saw Tim Burton and Christina Ricci were attached to the project then I was like "okay fine, I'll watch it."

It took me a week to finish watching it, and I was so disappointed at the end. It was good, but not great. I spent days thinking about what I would have changed, whose character needed a makeover, and what I hoped they would do for season two. When I couldn't let it go, that's when I decided to write my own "season two". That's how Hell Is Round the Corner was born!

I used to write Twilight FanFiction back in the day on FanFiction.net, and the whole experience was bad. People were mean as hell! I think it was because my generation grew up with Eminem so we're not afraid to say out of pocket shit, but like holy shit. I remember someone coming for my life because I forgot a comma. So when I found AO3 and read through a few stories and comments, I decided to give it another chance.

Had I known people would actually read my stories, I would have picked a cooler username. I was like "lemme just throw something together real quick so I can get started and see where this goes." Noodle is the name of my cat and 2021 was the last good year I had before it all went to hell in a handbasket.

What Was Hell Is Round the Corner Supposed to Be:

It started off as just a prediction fic: who will be the stalker, what would a W&X friendship look like, ect ect. Then by chapter 3, the story and characters developed a mind of its own. Ajax wasn't supposed to become a main character, the fearsome foursome friendship we've all come to love was never going to be a thing, and Wednesday and Xavier weren't going to have such a tumultuous slow burn relationship.

I originally wanted it to be more like a detective story, but then I was like "well Wednesday kind of sucked as a detective on the show so why not play off of that?" That's why there's long periods of time where Wednesday is totally stumped and at a total loss. I love making fun of Wednesday's lack of detective skills through Xavier. He's sarcastic, witty, funny, and doesn't put up with Wednesday's bullshit. He's always pushing back because she needs a little humbling at times. I think she secretly likes it even in the show because it shows that Xavier doesn't think she's a freak or that he's afraid of her. But we'll get into their dynamics later.

Where I Got the Title From:

I struggled to find a decent title for at least two days before I posted the first chapter. It wasn't until I was scrolling through my Wednesday playlist that I found the song "Hell Is Round the Corner" by Tricky - it samples the song "Glory Box" by Portishead if you think it sounds familiar. The lyrics are wack, but I like the vibe and thought the title would work well with anything Wednesday related. I was so proud of myself when I found a way to name drop the title in Chapter 9.

Likewise, Ghosts In the Belfry got its title from the song "Bats In the Belfry" by Qveen Herby. I knew I wanted to tell a ghost story in the second installment, and I had the song stuck in my head for weeks so I was like "Ghosts in the belfry? fuck yeah!" Music heavily influences my decisions, but that's a beast of a topic for another day.

Final Thoughts:

I really have no clue how to kick this off so sorry if this all sounded clumsy and unnatural; I always suck at beginnings. I figured the best place to start would be at the actual start of my journey here. Anyway, I'm excited to get into more details and explain my thought process as I continue writing this epic saga that was never supposed to exist, and that almost didn't exist. If it weren't for your support and kind words, I never would have had the confidence to continue writing.
