Work Text:

Nicky wasn't really in the mood for a wedding today. His ex dumped him five minutes before they were supposed to leave together with the words: "You're so boring in bed, Nicky, that I found it necessary to find someone else that is more exciting than you.". Nicky didn't know how to respond to that comment about him but he knew he wouldn't cry in front of his ex, so instead he just left with the words: "Fine. I don't mind being boring at all because I wasn't the one who cheated on his boyfriend."

After church, there was a reception at a hotel. Maybe Nicky should be socializing with the wedding couple and other guests instead of eating his way through the dessert bar, but he had just been dumped and needed something with a lot of sugar in it. He made sure only to take one piece of everything on the dessert buffet because he wasn't rude at all and knew how to share.

With a full plate filled with ten different desserts, Nicky found a table, where he noticed another couple opposite the table who was talking and kissing but not much more before he started to eat.

"You and I are handling being dumped before a wedding very differently," A voice said to Nicky's right. "Maybe I should have done what you are doing."

Nicky swallowed the rest of the sugar doughnut before he looked at the man to his right. The man was wearing a navy blue tux, dark skin, brown eyes, and curls. The man was drinking tea.

"Where you eat your way through a dessert buffet, I broke my fingers," The man said and held up his left hand. "My ex told me he was dumping me in the same second I was trying to hit a sandbag. Instead of the sandbag, I hit the wall behind the sandbag and broke two of my fingers. To make it even worse, my ex didn't even bother to check if I were ok at all. He simply left me. I then went out to take a shower but because I still was so angry over being dumped, I forgot all about my two broken fingers and slammed my fist into the steel locker. resulting in two more broken fingers."

The man drank the rest of his tea.

"My ex," Nicky said. "He told me I was boring and that was why he cheated on me. He used that as a justification."

"He must be blind then and a complete idiot," The man burst out. "If I were dating a man like you, I would never cheat on you. I mean, you're drop-dead gorgeous and the ass you got. I could write poetry about that."

Nicky blushed as he looked over his shoulder in an attempt to have a look at his ass.

"Well, thanks, no one has ever said they want to write poetry about my ass before now," Nicky said. It made the man smile and it showed his dimples."But before you continue flattering me, I need to ask you this. Isn't it a bit of a cliche flirting at a wedding, because that was what you were doing before or am I wrong?"

"No, you weren't wrong at all. Ever since I saw you in the church a couple of hours ago I have been thinking of flirting with you," The man replied. "And I don't mind that flirting at a wedding is a cliche because in my mind it could be the start of a great romance."

"Based on our conversation so far let me guess what kind of man you're," Nicky said. "You're an incurable romantic."

The man laughed.

"Not before today. Before I started to talk with you my words were never like this," The man replied. "I think you're turning me into an incurable romantic because I have already started to compose poetry about you."

Nicky blushed again as he ran a finger over the cake crumbs.

"I feel flattered that you want to write poetry about me, truly," Nicky said. "But I was dumped less than three hours ago so I'm not ready for a new boyfriend yet."

"I respect that because I also feel the same thing if I have to be honest," The man replied. "So, why don't we do this instead? We take the time to process the things that need to be processed and then I hope you'll text or call me as the first one when you're ready for a date. No pressure from me."

Nicky thought for a moment. The man did seem nicer than his ex.

"On one condition," Nicky said. "That you tell me my name."

"Joe," Joe said as he reached out his hand as a greeting. "And the name of the cute Italian with the amazing ass?"

"Nicky," Nicky replied as he took Joe's hand to greet him. "You should know I'm not as good as you're when it comes to flirting."

"Neither were I three hours ago," Joe replied. "It will come to you."

"Thanks," Nicky replied. "Not to be rude, but I need more sugar. Still processing the breakup."

"I think I will join you," Joe replied. "Eating sugar is better than hitting a wall, but please don't laugh. I'm left-handed and might miss the mouth while eating."

"I promise you this," Nicky replied. "I will never laugh at you, Joe, but only with you."

"See, you're good at flirting too," Joe replied. "Now, since you're the leading expert on the dessert buffet, what do you recommend?"

The rest of the evening, Joe and Nicky talked and talked discovering they had so much in common. When they parted, they had exchanged phone numbers and it only took less than ten seconds then they texted each other. And it didn't take long before they both were ready for their first date. After their date, they started to date and every day, Joe would tell Nicky he wasn't boring at all, while Nicky called Joe an incurable romantic. Within two years they would get married themselves.
