And Then There’s Wade

Summary:

Sonic doesn’t understand adults.

Chapter 1: Sonic

Chapter Text

Sonic didn’t think he’d ever understand adults.

(Tom/Wade/Maddie)

Sonic knew that people married each other because they wanted to spend their lives together, that his parents loved each other a lot. They used pet names and teased and had movie nights, and they acted like people in movies who really loved one another.

Which is why he wasn’t sure where Wade factored in.

He loved Wade! Wade was his weird uncle who loved movies and comic books and understood him better than most adults. He made the best snacks and liked hugs and ice fishing.

But where did Wade fit in to their lives? In the movies the married couple never had their best friend over for their movie nights, didn’t sit on either side and talk about work and movies like it was normal. Adults didn’t usually have sleepovers when they were married.

Don’t get him wrong, he liked having Wade over. Wade always woke up early, wearing boxers and a old t-shirt that Sonic was sure he’d seen his dad sleep in. His hair messy, humming some old song as he started on breakfast while everyone slept and made coffee that Tom always insisted was the best the way he made it. Sonic thought it tasted gross like all other coffee, but Wade always turned pink and smiled, bumping shoulders with his dad with a laugh.

Maddie always woke up last, rubbing her eyes and thanking Wade with a sleepy hug that lasted way too long. Tom would just smile and shake his head like he did when Tails did something cute.

Sonic felt like he was intruding, watching them, like he was seeing a private moment not meant for him. He always joined his brothers for breakfast and didn’t say anything, watching as Wade took a step back.

Wade was good to them. He found something to connect to all of them. With Sonic it’s comics, trusting him enough to let him read through issues that Wade treasured, talking about hero movies and what the kids shows got wrong. With Tails it was being a Guinea pig, always full of questions about what the new gadget was and how he came up with it. With Knuckles there was a weird solidarity, and they often went for walk in the woods talking about random things. Knuckles connected well with Wade, for some reason.

Wade was good to his parents too, giving long hugs and kisses on their cheeks and telling them he’d see them later, leaving them leaning against each other in the adult side hug with matching smiles. They smiled a lot around Wade, the way they smiled at each other.

It was Friday and Wade was over for the weekend again, bringing his backpack of clothes and a new Lego kit to do with the boys. He always go Tails mini blocks since they were harder and Knuckles just watched  them all and did commentary. Sonic got a pirate ship to do while tails got a Japanese cabin with a river.

Wade met his parents with a hug, giving Tom a fist bump with a happy little laugh before hugging the boys and starting to talk with them. Back when Sonic first came he used to babysit him so Tom and Maddie went out on dates. He still did sometimes, but most of the time they had a new babysitter they had hired, a nice lady who had fun games. Wade said he was sorry, but he needed adult time too, and he was always happy when they all came back and he dropped Tom and Maddie off.

Yeah, Sonic didn’t quite understand adults. They were confusing and weird and broke the rules set by movies, but as Wade laughed and fixed the legos he’d put on backwards, handing them back before giving his dad a wink that made him red, and tried not to care. As long as they were happy, he was happy. Besides, Wade was the best.
