Work Text:
I looked intently at the whiteboard. I could barely focus. Some random teacher, whose name I didn’t remember, stood in front of the class and was writing some kind of ancient Elven language on the white board. I was more than happy when the bell rang, and the other students and I hurried out, all equally bored. It was the end of the day and students crowded the halls trying to leave for the day.
I walked over to my locker, licked the DNA lock, and opened it. A slight note fell out. I opened it to discover a tiny rose that was sealed inside of the note. The note read, Hey Foster, meet me by the lake behind the school. Picnic date? -Keefe. My best friend, Biana, came up behind me. “Ooh, what’s that, a love letter?” She asked once she saw the note and the rose.
I handed her the note and her eyes scanned it before her face paled. “What’s wrong?” I asked her. “Oh nothing, I need to go.” She said, her voice breaking, and she hurried off into the crowd. I couldn’t believe it. Keefe had asked me on a date! But did Biana still like Keefe? I remember her telling me that her crush on him was gone, but why did she look like she was about to cry?
And should I even go? I didn’t want to hurt Biana. She is my best friend, but this was an opportunity to be in another relationship. I walked outside, my gaze to the ground, when a familiar voice rang. “Why so down, Foster?” I looked up to see Keefe in his human sweater and jeans. He had skipped school again.
But what really concerned me was how cute he looked. “Stop checking me out and come over here.” Butterflies filled my stomach as I walked over to him. He was sitting on the edge of the lake and he patted a spot next to him. “Here, I made some food for us.” He laid out a picnic blanket and opened a picnic basket, and brought out a mug of hot tea. Keefe placed a straw in and before he took a sip, I blurted, “I think Biana still has feelings for you.”
Keefe looked at me as if I had struck him. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “So let me guess. You didn’t want to go on this date with me because you didn’t want to hurt her.” I looked down. “I didn’t want to hurt her, but I wanted to go on a date with you. He cupped my chin and forced me to look at him. My heart raced. Is he going to kiss me?
“I like you, Sophie,” He blurted. I blushed and looked down. “Look at me, Sophie.” I looked up at him and then he kissed me. I grabbed the collar of his shirt and kissed him back, his lips tasting of strawberries. We pulled away and my mind spun. I kissed Keefe, I kissed Keefe, I kissed Keefe! Before I knew what was happening, his arm was around my waist and he was kissing me again.
We pulled away, his hand in mine and the other through my hair. “Wow.” I said, “I didn’t know you could kiss like that.” “You were my first.” He said, blushing. His ice-blue eyes were sparkling. I leaned in and pecked him on the lips. My head spun again. I kissed Keefe three times! “Foster?” “Yes?” “I want to give you something.” “Ok, what is it?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a locket in the shape of half a heart. I stared at it before looking up at his smiling face before I threw my arms around him. “Thank you,” I told him. He smiled, “turn around.” I turned, and he lifted my hair and placed the locket around my neck. I blushed when his hand caressed the back of my neck.
I turned back around as Keefe spoke, “I couldn’t even imagine in my wildest dreams that anything like this could happen.” “Wait, you dream about me?” He chuckled, “Sophie, you’re beautiful. Any guy who doesn’t dream about you is a fool.” He pulled out something else from his pocket. “It’s the other locket.” I breathed.
His gaze met mine as he took my locket from on my neck in his hand and connected it to his locket. He pulled away, suddenly shy. “Sophie, there’s something I wanted to ask you.” “Yes?” “Will you be my girlfriend?” “Does this answer your question?” I asked and kissed him. We pulled away. “It does.” He said. I smiled, and we kissed again.
“Hey, do you, uh, maybe want to dance, um, slow dance?” He asked, blushing. I smiled, “we don’t have any music, silly.” Then he pulled out a speaker and pulled out an iPod and began playing a slow love song. We both stood up, and he offered his hand, “may I have this dance?” Butterflies danced in my stomach but I said, “we may.” I put my hand in his and he kissed it, making my heart thump so hard.
As we began to slow dance, I could feel my face heat up. He was so handsome, and we were dating! His gaze met mine. My heart began to race. “I can’t believe it, you actually like me.” He said. I looked him in the eye, “Of course, I have always liked you.” And he kissed me again. We pulled away and his ice-blue eyes peered into mine, before his arms were around my waist and he kissed me again.
We pulled away, one of his hands in mine, and the other was in my hair. “I don’t deserve you.” He whispered before kissing me again, this time his lips tasting of cherries. He pulled away first. He cupped my cheek with his hand, his thumb caressing my cheek. “You’re so beautiful.” We were about to kiss again, but suddenly footsteps came from the stairs of Foxfire.
My head spun as I saw Biana. “Biana-” “Don’t talk to me,” and she ran from the school, my eyes following. Keefe put his hand on my shoulder, “give her some time.” My head spun again. “this was what I didn’t want happening. I don’t want to hurt her, but I already did.” “Foster, look at me.” I looked up and began to blush because of the intensity of his eyes. “She’ll be okay.” “But she likes you a lot.”
“Foster, she’s my best friend’s little sister. I know her. She’ll get over me.” I looked at the ground. “I’m a terrible friend. The words spilled from my mouth. “Hey,” he gently grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him.
My gaze met his, his eyes sparkling. “You are not a bad friend.” I didn’t reply. “Hey, how about I walk you home and tomorrow you can talk to her, okay?” “Okay,” I whispered.
“Thank you.” He said. “For what?” “For everything, you have no idea how much I’ve always liked you. You’ve made me so happy.” My heart raced, “you make me really happy too.”
He stared into my eyes and for a second I thought he might kiss me again, but then it began to rain. Before I knew it, it was pouring, and the ground was muddy. He sparkled again as he said, “come on, I’ll walk you home.”
He offered his hand, and I took it, but he didn’t start walking. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “I’ve always wanted to kiss a girl in the rain.” He said. I smiled, standing on my tiptoes and pecked him on the lips.
I saw how his eyes sparkled, so then I gave him a full on kiss. We pulled away and a familiar smirk played on his lips. “I’ll race to your house!” He shouted before taking off running.
“Hey no fair!” I shouted back and ran to keep up with him. He stopped just in front of my house. “Can’t keep up?” He asked with a smirk playing on his lips.
The Moon rose in the sky, and I turned to look at it. But then I noticed he was staring at something else. “What are you looking at?” “You.” “Why are you looking at me like that?” “Because you’re beautiful.” “Oh my god,” I chuckled. “I enjoy looking at beautiful people.” Then he kissed me again under the moonlight. “I don’t deserve someone like you.” Keefe said after we had pulled away. The intensity of his gaze made me blush.
Suddenly, someone cleared their throat behind us. A tall figure stood in the doorway, but it was so dark out I couldn’t see who it was until they stepped out of the shadows. “Okay kids, smooch fest is over.” Said Grady, arms crossed across his chest, and his eyes glared at Keefe. But before I could say anything else, Grady put his hand on my lower back and led me back to the house.
I walked upstairs to my room. I couldn’t believe it. Keefe kissed me! And the way he looked at me made me fall even harder for him. I went into my closet and changed into my pajamas.
I went into the bathroom and stared in the mirror. My cheeks were still red. I then washed my face and walked back into my room. I looked at the window and saw the sun was going down, but then I saw the same cute blond standing outside my window.
He stared at me and chuckled, “nice pajamas, Foster.” “What are you doing here?” I whisper-shouted out to him. “I wanted to see you.” He said. “Grady is going to be here any minute, and then we’ll both be in trouble.”
“Can I, um, crash with you tonight?” He stuttered. I blushed, “sure but just this once.” He climbed through my bedroom window. “I’ll sleep on the floor.” “No, you can sleep on the bed with me if you want.”
I blushed as I realized what I had just offered him. “Are you sure?” He asked, his face still red. I nodded. I got into my bed. “Are you going to sleep in your jeans?” He nodded, “yeah, don’t worry Foster, I felt worse things than sleeping in tight jeans.”
Not sure what he meant by that, I nodded. He lay next to me, stared before saying, “God, you’re beautiful.” And kissed me gently. He pulled away and smiled before kissing me again. He tasted sweet.
We need to get to bed. It’s getting late." And I fell asleep staring at the ceiling with his arm around my waist.
