Chapter Text
To say Anne Boonchuy had a strange life would be an understatement.
She would never have believed you if you told her that she would go from a mischievous laid back girl to a successful herpetologist with her own exhibit. She would have believed you even less if you told her she would be sent to a different dimension and find a frog family on her thirteenth birthday.
yes, Anne Boonchuy’s life was full of oddities, after all how many people could claim to have died saving a planet from a hive mind of newts only to be resurrected by a god in the form of her cat?
Her time in Amphibia had changed her for the better, and despite the perfect goodbye she got to have she still missed everything in the amphibious world. Questions filled her mind each day, did Hop-Pop ever strike it rich? How did Polly grow up? Were Sprig and Ivy still together? She resented the fact that these questions would never be answered for her.
However on a particular Thursday morning when she had the day off from her work at the aquarium, she received news she never thought she would hear.
“Huh?” She said to herself quietly as she heard her phone buzz, “Who’s texting me this early in the morning?”
She picked up her phone and looked at the message. It was sent by her old friend Terri.
Anne, I need you to come to the lab ASAP
We did it
Anne’s face paled, they did it? But that could only refer to one thing, or at least only one thing that involved her. But that was impossible, right? The stones were destroyed, the last shards used to power a one-way trip back to Earth, there’s no way that a portal could have been opened again.
Regaining her composure, Anne typed out a response to Terri.
I’ll be there in an hour max
Pressing send, she quickly rushed to her room, lazily threw on the first set of clothes she could find, and sped out of her door to her car.
Terri stood looking at the device she and Dr. Jan had built. After so many years and so many attempts they had successfully built a portal large enough for a human to walk through. It took a lot of money and a lot of strings had to be pulled by Mr. X to make sure the project wasn’t shut down entirely, but it would all be worth it if she managed to reunite the calamity trio with their friends on the other side.
At that moment a large crash was heard as Anne Boonchuy barged through the door. Catching her breath she began to speak.
“You… you said you did it… do you mean I can…” she stuttered out in shock. Terri put on a kind smile and put a hand on Anne’s shoulder.
“Yes, you can go back to Amphibia.” She said confidently.
Anne’s face lit up with both joy and confusion.
“But how? The stones are gone, my powers are gone, returning to Amphibia should be impossible!”
Suddenly Dr. Jan walked into the room with a Jovial expression on her face.
“We thought so too, but we had certain circumstances that helped us.” She said
“Circumstances?” Anne replied confused
“You gave Sprig your phone correct? We managed to isolate the signal from it and track it across the multiverse.” Terri explained, “We were also fortunate enough to meet another scientist who just so happened to have experience working on dimensional portals. After hearing your story he agreed to help, not before giving us a lengthy warning about not trusting any one-eyed triangles though…”
To be completely honest Anne had no clue what Terri had just said. She was indeed a smart girl with a PhD in herpetology but none of what she had heard began to make the slightest bit of sense. Instead she just went along with it and nodded.
“So if this portal works, why did you only contact me?” She asked
“We did contact the other two.” Dr. Jan clarified “But Sasha was busy with her job and Marcy is currently at a convention in another state.”
Anne nodded before finding a chair to sit on.
“I see, this is all so much to take in.” She said softly, before putting on a determined face, “So when can I go through the portal?”
Terri smiled.
”It should only take about half an hour to boot up.”
Sprig and Ivy Plantar were going for a leisurely walk in the woods. It was a nice pass time that reminded the two of their childhood. The times Ivy set up ambushes, the evenings they spent together looking at the fireflies, each one was a treasured memory with the frog he came to love.
Sprig considered himself a very lucky frog. He had friends all around Amphibia, a family that loved him dearly, and he was together with the frog of his dreams, what more could he ask for? He constantly told himself this despite the fact he knew exactly what he would ask for if he could.
Anne Boonchuy, his dearest friend and sister figure, even after all these years Sprig still thought about her. Sprig often wonders what life would have been like if he had never met Anne. Would he be the same person? Would he of realised his love for Ivy without her help? The young frog considered Anne to be the catalyst of so much in his life. But despite this, he knew he could never see her again.
“Hey, Ivy.” He sighed “Do you ever miss Anne and the others… Ivy?” Sprig turned to see that Ivy had disappeared from his sight, he didn’t even notice her let go of his hand.
“AMBUUUSH!” Ivy yelled jumping from a tree. She tackled Sprig to the ground laughing, “Geez Sprig, you still fall for that? We’ve known each other for years!”
Sprig chuckled as Ivy got off of him, “Heh, can you really blame me? You haven’t done that for ages.” He said.
Ivy walked up to him and slung her arm around his shoulder, “Well you looked down in the dumps, I thought it would cheer you up a bit.” She explained before looking intently into Sprig’s eyes, “What’s the matter Sprig? You know you can tell me anything.”
Sprig sighed, “It’s just, it’s been twelve years since Anne left us forever. I miss her so much.” He confessed, “She may have been a completely different species from me, but she felt just as much of a sister to me as Polly is.”
Ivy looked solemnly at Sprig before embracing him in a warm hug, she understood how badly Anne’s departure hurt him, he wouldn’t even leave his house for a few weeks after that faithful day.
“I understand Sprig.” Ivy said softly whilst releasing the hug and taking a seat on the ground with Sprig, “I mean, I never had any siblings. But when my grandmother died, well, I guess it still hurts to this day.”
Sprig recalled back when Sylvia Sundew passed away. Felicia, Ivy and Hop pop were distraught, to this day he could still occasionally find his grandad moping around depressed. Ivy closed her eyes and rested her head on Sprig’s shoulder.
“Losing people truly is the hardest thing in life.” She said, “But I guess the important thing is that we keep going on, treasuring their memories. After all we still have each other, and I’m sure Anne would be proud of the person you’ve become.”
Sprig hummed in agreement, and the two frogs sat lovingly looking on at the lake. Sprig closed his eyes too choosing to treasure the moment he was spending with Ivy.
suddenly, a deafening noise filled the air completely destroying the precious moment. Both frogs quickly got up and were on high alert searching for the source of the strange sound. Looking on to a clearing in the forest, Sprig and Ivy saw something they least expected.
“Is… is that?” Sprig muttered out dumbfounded.
“No way…” Ivy murmured beneath her breath.
Sprig and Ivy were taken back from the sight in front of them, as somehow despite all the odds there was a portal forming right in front of their eyes.
“But how? The stones were destroyed!” Sprig blurted out, “Were there more stones in another world? What if it’s dangerous?”
Ivy had no time to respond as the portal continued to grow in size, she quickly took Sprig’s arm and ran for cover behind a tree. The portal buzzed and swirled with power and continued to grow further in size until a figure appeared in it. Sprig and Ivy took defensive positions, not knowing who or what this invader may be. But as it continued to walk through the portal, both frogs stood mouths agape at the sight.
A young woman with light brown skin and messy auburn hair tied up in a ponytail emerged from the portal, she looked around with wonder and tears in her eyes.
“No way…” The woman cried with a massive grin on her face, “It actually worked! I’m actually back!”
Sprig was stunned, was he dreaming? Was this some kind of illusion? While the woman in front of his eyes looked different then he remembered, there was no doubt in his mind that this was none other than Anne Boonchuy. Sprig gulped and slowly walked forward.
”…Anne?” He spoke softly, causing the woman to quickly turn to him in surprise, “Is that… really you? No, you can’t be real! I must be dreaming! This must be-“
He was cut off by a high pitched scream and a large weight tackling him to the ground. The slightly pain of hitting the ground quickly notified him that he was definitely not dreaming.
“OH MY GOD! SPRIG!” Anne screamed with joy while putting the frog in a bone crushing embrace “IT’S REALLY YOU! I’M REALLY BACK!”
tears welled up in Sprig’s eyes as he slowly returned the hug, “B-But how?” He said, “The stones were destroyed, I thought we would never see you again.”
Anne wiped the tears away from her eyes, “Oh Sprig, ever since me and others left we’ve been trying to find our way back.” She sobbed, “It took Terri and the others twelve years but we finally did it! We built a portal that can bring us back!”
Sprig and Anne were both shaking with joy as the looked at each other for the first time in over a decade.
“AMBUUUSH!” Ivy yelled, suddenly tackling Anne to the ground, “Hey you, we didn’t think we’d ever see you again!”
Anne was confused for a second before her eyes widened in realisation, “Wait… Ivy?” She said shocked, “Woah, you’ve changed so much!”
It was true, Ivy had changed a lot over the years. Now being noticeably taller and slightly thinner and most notably with her red hair spewing out like crazy no longer concealed by a hat. She was a stark contrast to Sprig who had barely changed at all in the last twelve years, only growing taller with slightly longer hair.
“Ha. Yep, that’s me!” Ivy chuckled while eyeing Anne up and down, “Although you’ve changed quite a bit too.”
Anne chuckled looking at the two frogs. Suddenly a burning question that had been plaguing her mind came front and centre, and despite the possible awkward circumstances she couldn’t help herself from speaking her mind.
“Wait wait wait, this is an awkward first question to ask but I need to know!” She said as a fan-girlish grin appeared on her face, “Is Sprivy still a thing?”
Sprig and Ivy looked at each other for a second before grinning as an admittedly mean idea crept into both of their heads.
“Oh, Ivy isn’t my girlfriend anymore Anne.” Sprig explained while trying to keep a straight face.
Anne’s face immediately dropped, a mask of pure devastation adorning her face, she looked like a child who had just learned the Santa Claus wasn’t real.
“B-But why?” Anne spoke dismayed, “You two were so good together! I shipped you for years!”
“Yeah, We just decided that we weren’t content with being boyfriend and girlfriend.” Ivy explained, a smile grew on her and Sprig’s face as they decided this game had gone on long enough, “Sooo, we decided to upgrade to the next level.”
Anne, who was still mourning the relationship started to perk up when Ivy’s words fully registered.
“Wait, upgraded? You don’t mean…” She said with growing anticipation.
Ivy put out her hand for Anne to shake, “Ivy Plantar, wife of Sprig Plantar at your service!” She said.
Anne looked at the couple as her smile and her eyes began to widen to an unnatural size and she let off a high pitched squeal not unlike the sound of a kettle.
“oh… my… GOD!” Anne cried out in joy, “I’m so happy for you two! When did you get married? How was the wedding? Did you have to do that weird courtship dance?”
Sprig was taken back by the sudden flood of questions, “Woah woah woah! Breathe Anne, I’ll answer all your questions in time.” He laughed, “Man, and I thought Hop Pop was excited.”
Anne’s face then lit up with excitement, “HOW COULD I FORGET HOP POP!” She exclaimed, “When can I see him? When can I see polly? When can I… oh wait, Hop Pop is still around right?”
Sprig chuckled, “Yeah Hop Pop is still around.” He clarified, “He said he wanted to beat Mrs. Croaker’s record for oldest frog in Wartwood.”
Anne let out a huge sigh of relief, “Phew, I thought I ended up saying something insensitive there.” She said, “So can I see him.”
Sprig nodded, “Sure, he’s out with Polly at the moment but we can wait for him back at the house.” He said, “Actually… there is something I need to show you anyway.”
Anne looked intrigued while Ivy had a knowing smile on her face. The trio took off and began to walk back to Plantar farm.
After awhile of walking, The three had arrived at the Plantar house. Anne basked in the nostalgia of seeing it again before something peaked her interest.
“Hop Pop’s California Avocados?” She said confused, “When did he manage to get another Avocado? I thought he lost the last one.”
Sprig laughed, “Nobody really knows, but he made a fortune off of it.” He explained “Now, you wait out here, I just need to get something from the house.”
Anne obliged as she watched Sprig run into the house, less than a minute later he came back out with something hidden behind his back.
“Ok Anne, now I’ll need you to close your eyes and hold your hands out for a sec.” Sprig explained, “And uh, please be very careful.”
Anne was puzzled but followed her friend’s instructions. She closed her eyes and felt as something soft and squishy was placed into her hands, it was a weird feeling but oddly familiar.
“Ok, now open your eyes!” Sprig commanded.
Anne slowly opened her eyes and was shocked to see what she was holding, a peachy-orange coloured pollywog was sat in her arms looking up at her. Anne was stunned as her gaze turned from the pollywog to Sprig, then to Ivy, then back to the pollywog, then back to Sprig and Ivy. She finally broke out of her stunned stupor and came to a realisation.
“No… freaking… way…” she exclaimed as her mind put two and two together, “Is this?”
Sprig smiled, “Meet the newest member of the Plantar family, my daughter Anna Plantar.” He said softly.
Anne teared up once more and brought both Sprig and Ivy into a loving embrace, being careful to keep Anna safe.
“Oh my god!” Anne squealed, “I’m literally going to die from cuteness overload!”
“We were originally going to name her Anne, but it turns out that when someone saves the whole world a lot of people seem to name their kids after them.” Ivy explained, “Plus I kinda preferred the name Anna anyway, no offence.”
Anne laughed, “Man, things have changed so much, I can’t believe my favourite froggy brother has his own kid now!” She said, “Wait, does this technically make me an Aunt?”
The trio all laughed at Anne’s realisation of Aunthood. It was just then that Sprig saw Hop-Pop and Polly on their way back.
“Oh shoot! Hop Pop is nearly back!” Sprig exclaimed, “Quick Anne! Go into the basement, I want your appearance to be a surprise!”
Anne laughed at Sprig’s antics before obliging and running into the house before Hop Pop could see her.
