i am a little garden girl... (a verse translation)

Summary:

A verse translation of Miniature Garden Girl (箱庭の少女).

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

if i had been a human girl

i am a Little Garden Girl,
and you are everything —
so won't you stay with me in here,
stay here with me and sing?

the World Outside is not for me,
you say — and i believe —
so there's no need to learn of it
nor need for me to leave.

to me, you are my Papa —
at least — that's what you're called —
to you, i am your Daughter,
to you, i am your Doll.

you care for me — i cannot walk —
you worry constantly,
collecting all the beauty of
the World in here for me:

a Wineglass full of red impalms
a silver Spoon in blue —
and ancient Mirrors with yellow frames
in jumelle sets of two.

i am a Little Garden Girl
who doesn't know a thing —
so won't you stay with me in here,
stay here with me and sing?

a window to the World Outside
enlimns a darkened Room,
and that is all the Universe
in which i am entombed.

you care for me — you are so kind —
so gentle and concerned —
and yet you never say to me
a Word about the World.

the little Things inside my room —
they derogate and tease
"for you are just another Thing
"no different from us!"

Lu Li La Lu Li La, i sing,
the World Outside to blot
i sing — for you and you alone —
because it's what i want.

and then —
i overhear you speak
a strange new Word —
— War?

Papa,
         why is my
                          little room
                                            on Fire—?

the Mansion turned to Ashes,
the Flames consuming All —
the Man found dead — and in his Arms
a smoldered Clockwork Doll.

Notes:

Let's change things up a bit. Instead of author notes, here's some reader questions for you! (Humour me, this is one of my favourite ways to interact with written work. Yes, I am a nerd.)

The title of the song is usually translated *Miniature* Garden Girl. Why do you think *Little* is used here instead?

Read the epigraph, and imagine continuing it. Why would the Clockwork Doll wish to be a human girl?

How does the Clockwork Doll’s language change when she’s speaking to Gallerian? Compare the stanzas with “you” in them with the ones without. What is the Clockwork Doll’s vocabulary like?

Do you believe the Clockwork Doll when she says she “doesn’t know a thing”?

Are the capitalised words and em dashes merely ornamental, or do they add something else to the poem?

When does the poem depart from its form, whether to break the metre, use imperfect rhymes, or stop using the ballad structure altogether? What is significant about these points in the story?

Who is speaking at the final stanza?
