Billy whistled a little song as he walked home from school, the nice thing about living close to Woodsboro High was that he could just walk home. His mom didn’t like that he walked home however, she was always worried that something would happen to him and he wouldn’t be able to defend himself, even though he was fourteen now. His dad however…he didn’t care about what happened to him it seemed, he had always been distant from him. His mom always told him he just didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve and did love him. Billy was never sure how much he believed that though.
He wasn’t going to let that get to him today however, no sir, surprisingly today had actually been a good day. He got 100% on both his Algebra and Biology tests, Stu and him were going to have a horror movie marathon this weekend and Randy even agreed to join them this time! Probably the best part in Billy eyes didn’t even happen to him but rather Sidney. The Homecoming Dance was coming up and Tatum had said yes when Sidney asked her to go with her. He remembered how Sidney ran up to him with the biggest smile on her face and told him, it made him happy to see her so happy.
He wanted to ask Stu to go with him, Sidney and Tatum both were trying to push him to ask him. Being the nervous wreck he was when it came to this time of stuff however, he didn’t have the confidence to even attempt to anything like that. Billy shook his head as he finally reached his house and unlocked the door with his key.
He knew something was wrong the moment he opened the door, stepping inside he could tell all the lights were off and the room stunk of alcohol. He jumped back when he stepped on something crunchy, looking down he saw he stepped on broken glass. Billy took a moment to be thankful that he hadn’t taken his shoes off and continued walking through.
”Mom? Dad?” Billy whispered, jumping when he heard shuffling coming from the kitchen
Billy stepped in slowly once he saw his Dad crouched down and sitting by the sink. Being careful to look for broken glass he sat down next to him. He didn’t say anything at first, he wasn’t even sure if his Dad knew he was there. He was resting his head down on his knees.
”Dad?” Billy called quietly
He looked up and turned his head just enough to see Billy, then scowled and turned away. The action upset Billy a little bit, but he didn’t get up, instead he continued to sit there.
”Where’s Mom?” Billy asked, wishing she was here, she would know how to fix this!
“She left” was the respond that he received “She finally got tired of my shit and having to deal with you.”
Billy frowned as dread starting to leak into his body, no she couldn’t have left. Even if she did she would’ve taken him with her, or at least let him say goodbye! She would’ve let him try and talk her out of it and she would’ve listened!
“Get out of my sight boy” was the next thing hissed out of him “And stop with the pathetic looking face and eyes, they aren’t becoming of a man.”
Billy slowly got up, getting that now wasn’t the time to be with his Dad. He went to his room and sat down on his bed, dropping his bag on the floor. He didn’t bother putting it up on the little hook he had where he usually put it. Laying down on his bed he felt something crunch underneath his head. Lifting his head up he saw a blue sticky-note on his pillow, he un-crumpled it and read it. Feeling his heart sink as he read and re-read the note.
I’m So Sorry, Billy…
- Mom
No, she couldn’t have left, she couldn’t have she wouldn’t have done this. He knew that their relationship was getting a little rough but he thought that they working through it. They seemed happier, they were spending more time together! What the hell happened between then and now, what could have possibly happened?
He couldn’t stayed here, he just couldn’t, he had to go somewhere else. The thought of staying here make his stomach churn. Where could he go though, he didn’t want to bother Tatum or Sidney and Randy, while a dorky friend that he loved, wasn’t my the comforting type. That left Stu, it always ended up being Stu, no matter how much he tried to not let it be. Clutching the note in his hand, he started packing a small bag and left a note in return for his Dad. Just so he knew where he was and didn’t panic.
Billy left through his window, it wasn’t very hard since he had done it at least a million times before. The walking to Stu’s house was a pain though, the drive wasn’t horrible but walking seemed to take hours even if it was only forty-five minutes.
He was thankful when he saw that Stu’s parents weren’t home, he could tell by the absence of cars in the driveway. Walking up to the doorway he almost chickened out and walked away, then remembered if he did he’d be sleeping on a park bench.
When Stu opened the door he had a goofy smile on his face, clearly ready to say something stupid or crack a joke. Then he saw the look on Billy’s face and froze, a concerned look taking over.
”Billy? What happened?” Stu asked
That was it, the damn broke and he couldn’t help just start sobbing and wrapped his arms around Stu. He instantly hugged the smaller boy back, and saw the blue sticky note in his hand.
”What is that, man?” Stu whispered, keeping his tone gently
That only made Billy sob harder, until just, nothing hit him, which really caught him off guard. He wasn’t expecting numbness to hit him this quickly. Handing over the sticky note he mumbled something about his mom leaving before he started sobbing again. Okay…so the numbness hadn’t started yet, only just a preview of what waited for him.
”Holy fuck, Billy” Stu mumbled, gently grabbing his arm and leading him upstairs
They went to his bedroom and just laid on his bed in the dark, the only light being from the moon. The fucking moonlight that was filtering through the curtains and landing on the blue sticky-note. He curled more into Stu’s embrace, letting the taller boy just hold him while he curled into a ball.
”Stu…” Billy whispered
“Yeah, yeah I’m here. What is it?” Stu whispered back, his tone more gentle than Billy had ever heard it
”You won’t leave me…right?”
”Never”
