Work Text:
Jiang Cheng walked out of the exam hall to rain. He stared blankly at the heavy downpour falling against the concrete, rolling down to the surrounding garden, and moistening the dry summer soil.
He had a date with Lan Wangji today. Once they finished taking their exams, they were supposed to head to the amusement park and destress with each other’s company. They even booked their tickets online.
Even when he had entered the examination hall, the sun was brightly shining down outside, he was not expecting to be greeted with such a torrential rain upon coming out of the hall.
Just as he was pondering whether to text Lan Wangji to check if he had finished his test, he heard thumping footsteps coming towards him. A bit listless, Jiang Cheng turned his head to find Lan Wangji jogging up at him.
Seeing his boyfriend, his soul which had been acting like an aimless radar, seemed to finally return to his body. Jiang Cheng spun towards him just as he slowed down to a stop before him.
He watched him pant, trying to catch his breath after running from two buildings over. A few pieces of hair wet from the rain stuck to his jade like skin, his sandy beige sweater wasn’t wet but it had beads of raindrops stuck on the soft woollen surface.
“It’s raining,” Lan Wangji spoke after his breathing returned to somewhat normal.
Jiang Cheng couldn’t help rolling his eyes, but there was a smile quirking the edges of his mouth upwards. “I can see that.”
As he reached out and began to brush off the rainwater from his boyfriend, Lan Wangji took a step closer and his arms loosely wrapped around Jiang Cheng’s waist.
The two stood in the hallway like that, with the rain as their only witness. Sometimes a strong wind would blow and bring over splashes of rainwater to brush on them. After a while Lan Wangji sighed, and spoke, “We can’t go on our date.”
Hearing the almost petulant whine, Jiang Cheng put a lot of effort into suppressing a chuckle. He dropped his head on Lan Wangji’s shoulder, breathing in the gentle sandalwood scent that always clung to his body. “It’s okay, we can go back to my room and watch a movie or something.”
“Your roommates will be there.”
Jiang Cheng could almost hear the pout in his voice. This time he really did chuckle, and burrowed himself deeper in Lan Wangji’s embrace. “I did not think you were looking forward to this that much.”
The hands around his waist tightened a little. It took a few moments before Lan Wangji spoke again. “You seemed stressed lately. I hoped this would lighten your mood.”
His heartbeat fluttered and his skin tingled with a flush after hearing the words. Of course he was stressed. Everyone was stressed during exam week. He hadn’t expected Lan Wangji to care so much about such a small issue. He was oddly touched at the thoughtfulness.
Now that the time was over, more and more people began to walk out of the examination halls. It wasn’t appropriate to stand there hugging in the middle of the hallway. Soon it’d be teeming with students. Jiang Cheng lifted his head to plant a kiss on the side of his mouth and stepped back.
Lan Wangji looked at him with surprise, his plush lips parted, and beautiful narrow eyes slightly wide. Jiang Cheng offered him a small smile and opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted.
Reaching out, Lan Wangji grasped one of his wrists and without waiting for Jiang Cheng to react, he turned and began a brisk walk.
“What- Wangji,” Jiang Cheng called as his boyfriend pulled him down the hallway, his pace growing faster with each step until they broke out into a run. Lan Wangji steered him out of the entrance and they both entered the rain.
They ran through the wet campus, rainwater splashing out with each step, staining the bottoms of their pants.
If it were any other time, Lan Wangji would never do such a thing which is why Jiang Cheng was a little perplexed. But with the freezing rain pouring over them, and the wind on his back, he had no time to think about anything at all.
After running for a while, Lan Wangji slowed down. They arrived at the campus lake. The sound of rain hitting the lake water created a beautiful noise and a few ducks floated around happily in the water.
Jiang Cheng stared at the scenery and his confused mind went blank. Devoid of any thoughts. He had walked by this lake countless times yet he looked as if he had seen it for the first time ever.
"How do you feel?" Lan Wangji's hand slipped into his, fingers slotting in between his. The rain fell in sheets around them, soaking every fiber of their being.
"You're silly, Lan Wangji," Jiang Cheng glanced at him, a smile playing on his lips. "We are gonna catch a cold."
"Then," Lan Wangji turned him towards himself, taking his face into his hands, staring him in the eye. Rain droplets fell from his face, blending in with the rest. "Let's go to my place? Uncle and brother won't be home until later."
Jiang Cheng's heart stuttered. He peered up at Lan Wangji, finding his intense gaze on him. His throat felt stuck, unable to utter a single word. Instead, he nodded out a yes.
Seeing Lan Wangji give him one of his rare smiles, Jiang Cheng felt a little dizzy, his heart beating a little fast.
A moment later Lan Wangji pressed in and Jiang Cheng moved to meet him in the middle. Their lips pressed together for a languid kiss with no heat behind it. Simply feeling each other through the softest touch of fheir lips.
Rain fell on the two of them, and on the deserted side of the lake where no one else appeared because of the pouring rain. It gave the illusion that there were only the two of them in the whole world.
