Chapter Text
Enid was in her room tidying up the last things so she could start her school day. Wednesday had left early, surely she would stop by the library before heading to class. Lately the girl seemed somewhat distant, she didn't spend so much time inside the room anymore, her writing hours had been reduced, as well as her hours to practice with the cello, Enid thought that she might want to change activities, but these things were very important for Wednesday, there was no way she could change his tastes so quickly. As she was looking at some prints of carnivorous plants that she had chosen for a botany class presentation, an idea crossed her mind... "What if she doesn't want to be in the same room as me?" Enid put the photos in her backpack and tried to dispel that negative thought and went to the door, took out her phone to check the time.
-Damn! I'm late- she put her phone in the pocket of her skirt and quickened her step, closing the door behind her.
Wednesday got out of bed very stealthily. The last thing she wanted at that moment was to wake up her roommate because she didn't want to deal with her so early in the morning.
Lately she felt "strange" and uncomfortable while she was around her roommate, a feeling that she didn't like so every day she got up a few hours earlier than usual to be able to escape from that room as soon as possible. This didn't help his insomnia much, but if she could get away from Enid during the day, she would anyway. Wednesday was finishing the last touches on her uniform when an imperceptible noise caught her attention. At first she thought that Enid had woken up so she looked in that direction of the room to see a riot of sheets breathing on the bed, among all that stuff a few strands of blonde hair peeked out, Wednesday sighed somewhat relieved that she wasn't awake. She looked back at her own bed and there she saw a shadow that had not been there before.
-Thing, I'm looking at you.- she said in a calm and barely audible way. The hand came out of its hiding place when it was discovered and climbed onto the girl's bed.
"Are you going to run away again?" He gestured. Wednesday raised an eyebrow and defiantly replied.
-Do you think I'm escaping? Who exactly? -. Thing pointed its index finger at the pulsing riot of sheets. Wednesday's eyes narrowed. -Why do you think I'm running away from Enid? - she asked with some misgivings. Thing pointed out that he had no idea and Wednesday looked away, the truth is that she didn't know either, what was certain is that she was indeed escaping from Enid, every time they crossed paths she didn't know how to react, she didn't know how to talk to her or interacting with her, something had changed after the incident with Tyler and Thornhill, after Enid engulfed herself to try to protect her from the Hyde, after the hug she gave her knowing she was safe.
After this, she found out that Enid had broken off her pseudo relationship with Ajax, the girl had told her that she didn't feel right being in a relationship after everything she had been through, call it fear or anxiety, but Enid didn't feel comfortable being in a relationship while she and Wednesday were going through all these events and all these changes, her transformation and stuff, there was no time for a relationship right now.
As she remembered that, she began to feel that unpleasant sensation again, which she did not know how to cope with. Wednesday grabbed her backpack and hurried to the door, but not before looking in the direction of where Enid was. She closed the door as slowly as she could and left the room, heading towards the Nevermore Library. Not before stopping by the cafeteria for a shot of espresso.
The good thing about the Academy is that almost all the spaces within the building were open 24 hours a day. The Academy was not afraid that the students would waste the objects and materials they had, so practically the entire place could be visited at any time. On her way to the library, Wednesday didn't run into anyone, it was something she appreciated, getting up too early had its good things and this was definitely one of them. Upon reaching the library, she found a familiar face, Bianca Barclay was sitting at one of the tables while reading a large green book and writing in his notebook. Wednesday was surprised for a few seconds, she wasn't planning to meet anyone and seeing her there had ruined the atmosphere a bit, but that wouldn't stop her from her morning walk looking for a book that caught her attention. She tried to be as stealthy as she could, it was not in her plans to start a conversation with anyone but Bianca, however as she approached the adjoining corridor to the table where the girl was, her footsteps became louder since she wasn't walking on the carpet, but on the hardwood floor. Bianca reacted just as surprised as Wednesday because it had not occurred to her to run into someone early in the morning, when she ran into the girl with braids she raised an eyebrow and with an inquisitive look, she said - Wow, I never thought another Nevermore student would get up so early to study...- Wednesday looked at her from head to toe and spoke with complete confidence.
-I don't need to study, I'm here to distract myself.- Bianca seemed a little confused.- You know? I come at these hours because there is no one here so I can concentrate better, plus I can get a task or two done. - she emphasized the word "no one".
- Who the hell comes at 5 in the morning just to "distract herself"?-
-Well, insomnia doesn't help, so I need to focus my energies on something else, so bye. - Wednesday continued advancing through the long corridor full of shelves with books, some more dusty than others, leaving Bianca a bit stunned, she sighed and reread the paragraph of her book again since that unexpected conversation had distracted her. - Great, now I'll have to modify my schedules so I don't run into her again. - she said to herself.
Wednesday browsed through the section for witchcraft books, although it was an interesting subject and somewhat familiar to her since many of her relatives had been great witches in the past but the incident with Goody Addams seemed too recent for her. She continued his way through the library passing through the section on cryptozoology, anatomy of certain creatures, myths and legends, gothic novels, etc. And none of these topics caught his attention. She kept walking until his attention was unconsciously fixed on a distant shelf, she felt goosebumps and her heart began to beat much faster than she was used to as she read the sign with the name of the section... "WOLVES”.
Wednesday tried to calm down and ignore this topic, but a thought crossed her mind, she wanted to know more about Enid's wolfish part, that could be the answer to all her questions, perhaps there was something in those books that could tell her the reason for these strange feelings and symptoms, it could be a contagious disease, something viral resulting from the transformation of her roommate, thousands of ideas crossed her mind while she was looking for a book that had these answers. She took one of the books that was called "Transformation, processes and wolf history", she looked for a table as far away as possible from any place where she could have social contact with other people and sat down, her cup of coffee was still hot so she calmly took a sip and prepared herself for the reading.
"Werewolves date back to the Iron Age, known as the warrior class," Wednesday's eyes traced over the book, apparently werewolves had emerged in various places at the same time, all types and species transforming at the same time, all types and species transformed upon seeing the full moon, some involuntarily and others with full consciousness, these could transform as a result of a curse without being born as werewolves, while those who were born as werewolves could transform as a product of sufficient maturity to withstand the transformation or because of the urgency of protecting something or someone important to them. Wednesday felt a leap in her heart, she remembered when Enid managed to transform into a wolf and fight Tyler in her Hyde form... protecting her. Wednesday put those thoughts out of her head and continued with her reading.
Suddenly she remembered that Enid had been transformed into a full blood moon, a lunar eclipse where the Earth stands between the Moon and the Sun and the red color is due to the Moon passing behind the shadow of the satellite. Wednesday searched the index of the book, trying to find on which page this moon was mentioned. She knew that the blood moon was associated with bloody battles between gods or natural catastrophes, she casually remembered a story Uncle Fester had told her, the time he was swept away by a tsunami in the Aleutian Islands during a blood moon. -A great story.- thought Wednesday.
The book showed multiple types of full moons and eclipses and each of the transformations that were associated with them. It stopped at the eclipse of the full blood moon, it was the one with the least information compared to the others. -You definitely had to be so special. Wednesday sighed. She laid her eyes on that description and for the thousandth time so far this day, her heart beat violently against her chest again as she read the words "LOVE" and "MARIAGE". "The wolverine transformations associated with this particular moon are due to strong feelings of love for a close person, awakening strong feelings of protection in the wolf. Generally, wolves that transform on this moon tend to do it when their partners or love interests are in danger, wolves seek to strengthen relationships with the person they wish to protect and in almost all cases there are lasting and fruitful marriages or what we could call "mate". Wolves transformed under this moon tend to be stronger tan the common of wolves but they also lose control faster than their peers so caution is suggested during full blood moon events."
That's it, that was the least thing I wanted to know at that moment. As if the chaos that was inside her mind and heart not knowing how to interpret these "feelings" towards Enid was not enough, the book gave her all this information at once which made her feel even more confused. Wednesday was highly intelligent and skilled at everything she did, but understanding emotions was definitely not one of them, much less understanding HER own feelings.
Actually, Wednesday knew perfectly well what these feelings were, but she thought that if she avoided them long enough, they would eventually go away, but the opposite happened, they grew more and more to the point where she couldn't just ignore them anymore and continue with his life, this was the reason for all those days of insomnia, escaping from his room first thing in the morning avoiding all contact with his roomie. Thing was right and she cursed him for this, how could a hand be so perceptive?
Wednesday felt overwhelmed so she closed the book and returned it to its proper shelf, remembering where it was so she could read it again in case more questions about Enid's nature arose. She looked for another book to get some ideas out of her head, a book covered by black velvet caught his eye, this one did not have his name on the cover, instead there was an emblem that Wednesday knew. A copper doorbell in the shape of a heptagram and a bouquet of orchids in the middle could only mean one thing, the witches of Salem. Wednesday had heard many stories from the Addams Family of close ties to Salem's mythical witches, including a major altercation between Goody Addams and Alse Osbourne, one of Salem's first convicted witches, who managed to escape from the gallow pretending to be dead. Wednesday was lost in her thoughts when the noise of multiple teenagers snapped her out of her trance. It was time to go to the classrooms, she looked at the book once more and put it in his backpack to read it later. Stepping out into the main hallway of the library, she noticed that Bianca had already left for class. Wednesday left the library and walked to the classroom, her first class was botany and for her bad luck, she would have to be in the same room as Enid. She put her hand on the doorknob of the classroom door and decided to open it. As she had planned, Enid was already inside the room with Yoko, when Yoko saw her come in she raised her hand in greeting and Wednesday acted as if she hadn't seen anything, she walked looking straight ahead and sat next to Xavier who was doing a sketch of a Nerium oleander.
Enid entered the classroom, half of the students were still missing so she looked around for a familiar face so she could share seats. Yoko was in the last row of seats and she gestured for her to come and sit next to her.
- For a moment I thought I would be late. - exhaled the girl letting herself fall on the seat.
-As you can see, half of the class is still missing so you arrived on time, what's more, I would say that you have plenty of time. - Said the vampire taking her glasses and looking at Enid, the blonde just smiled and began to take out her notes and pencils for class.
- Guess what, Wednesday left early this morning and didn't even bother to wake me up. - Enid seemed a little upset.
- Hahaha, how does it feel to lose your personal watch? - Yoko gave a small giggle, Enid looked directly into her eyes with a serious face.
-Yoko, I'm serious, I've come to think that I'm the problem, maybe she's avoiding me. - Enid's expression changed to a sadder one, she didn't understand why Wednesday had changed so much in such a short time. Of course, the girl was not the most communicative or expressive person but they had always had small conversations about their day, about the novel that Wednesday was writing or thoughts and complaints about their respective families, but this last time, nothing. Not a conversation, not a complaint, absolutely nothing. While Enid was deep in thought, the door opened and a familiar face appeared. Enid recognized her immediately, it was Wednesday, her dark circles looked much more pronounced and her pale face looked much whiter than normal. Enid felt her heart turn over, she hadn't seen her roomie directly in the face for a few weeks, so she couldn't hide a big smile that escaped from her mouth, she raised a hand to greet her.
-Wednesday! - The girl yelled trying to get her attention, Wednesday heard her, but decided to ignore her and go directly to the first table that was on her way, the table where Xavier was. She slowly lowered her hand with a taste of disappointment in her mouth. Yoko had taken in the whole scene and put a hand on her friend's shoulder.
- Wow, I knew Addams was a cold girl, but that was bad enough. What the hell did you do to make her react like that? - Enid looked at her while frowning.
- I don't even know what I could have done to make her treat me like this. I really don't know. - Enid sighed and returned to fix her gaze on the table. Yoko patted her friend's shoulder trying to comfort her.
- Hey, would you like to go out today with Divina and me? Let's go for a walk in the woods. - Enid thought about it for a bit, maybe she could go to think about other things and thus clear her mind. - I could go, but... Have you and Divina already gone through the honeymoon stage? I do not want to be a third wheel if you guys are going to be flirting throughout the whole walk. –
Yoko removed her hand from Enid's shoulder and made a gesture as if she had been insulted. A few months ago she and Divina had made their relationship official after a while of being in something "secret" although all their friends knew they were together.
- Hey, that you have problems with your wife is not a reason for you to insult me. - Yoko said in a sarcastic, almost mocking tone and in a tone of voice that was too loud. Enid felt her body go red and a small blush jumped to her cheeks, she put both hands on Yoko's mouth to silence her.
- Shhhhh, that was too loud, Wednesday is not my wife, what do I do if she heard you? I'm trying to patch up our differences in case you haven't noticed. - Yoko chuckled when she saw the desperation in the wolf's eyes. The sound of the door opening interrupted the conversation. It was the new botany teacher accompanied by the director, Weems had had to use his contacts to get a new teacher who wasn't a vengeful, psychopathic normie out to take down all of Nevermore with the help of a depressed teenager whose nature was to be a cold-blooded monster who worked in a coffee shop while committing murders throughout the county, something very normal, the usual.
-Good morning guys, as you know due to the events with Miss Marilyn Thornhill, Nevermore has seen the need to find a new teacher for the botany class and I think we have found one of the best botanists in the country and the world . I present to you Miss Barbara Jungius. - The woman next to the director took a few steps forward, she was approximately 5.6, thin, black hair and blue eyes, she wore a black robe over her clothes and glasses on her head. Enid thought she looked nice but after what had happened with Thornhill, she didn't want to immediately trust this new teacher.
- Thank you director Weems, I feel very honored and grateful for this opportunity. I hope we can get along. - The woman looked at each of her students and smiled. Weems said goodbye to her and wished the class good luck and left.
The class passed normally, everyone was amazed by the studies and research in which Miss Jungius had participated.
-Wow, I never would have imagined that this woman was so intelligent. - Yoko said taking her bag, ready to go to the patio for a rest. -Are you ready?- She looked at Enid.
-I think I forgot something, go ahead, I'll go back to my room and I'll catch up with you.- Enid was looking for a notebook that she was sure she had kept in her bag that morning. , but it was nowhere to be found. Yoko nodded and said goodbye to her friend. Enid quickly walked to the Ophelia building to take the notebook and leave, but something stopped her just outside her bedroom door. A little boy was sitting in the hallway, he seemed somewhat disoriented, he looked about 6 years old, with black hair and pale skin, Enid thought he looked a bit like Wednesday except for his expressive blue eyes. Enid approached the little one to find out what was wrong with him.
-Umm, hello! - Enid said calling the attention of the little boy who had a few tears in his eyes.
-Hello. - Said the little boy drying his tears, gave a long sigh. Enid expected some more conversation, but apparently the boy just said those words.
-What's wrong? Are you lost and that's why you cry? - Enid sat next to the child, he just looked at her and gestured with his shoulders.
-I don't know, I was with my mom and brothers at home and suddenly I came here. - The little boy's eyes began to fill with tears to which Enid panicked.
- I see, what's your name? My name is Enid Sinclair! - Enid gave a big smile trying to make him feel safe, the boy smiled back.
-My name is Damien Addams.- Enid's head exploded. “ARE YOU A FAMILY OF WEDNESDAY?” The girl thought, quickly took out her phone and began to write to Wednesday.
Enid: Wednesday, where are you? I am in our room and there is a child here, he says that he is related to you.
-Nice to meet you Damien, I just called a friend who can surely help us find your mommy, so don't worry. - Enid showed the phone to the boy.
-Oh really?- the boy's eyes were shining. Enid thought that the boy was much more mature for his age, she remembered the time she got lost in the woods near her house and there was nothing and no one that managed to calm her crying until her mother came and took her home. Instead of holding her back, she had given her a lecture for getting lost and a week's detention. "Great moments of my childhood" she thought. A small sound took her out of her head, her phone was ringing, she saw who it was and felt her heart beating all over her chest, it was Wednesday, she had almost forgotten her voice since she hadn't heard it for so many days. She took a breath before answering, but before she could say anything, Wednesday spoke.
- Who is it? You say it's a relative? - asked the girl dryly.
-Hello Wednesday, he is a small boy, I think he may be your cousin. His name is Damien Addams. - There was a moment of silence. -Wednesday? You still there? Enid asked.
- There is no one in my family with that name , Enid. - Wednesday sounded somewhat incredulous. - Where are you? Are you still in our room? -
-Yeah! We’re outside, are you going to come to help me? - Enid exclaimed, only to hear an almost imperceptible "Yes" followed by the sound of the phone hanging up. - Ok, my friend will come to help us! - Enid sounded almost on the verge of a panic attack, she really missed Wednesday and wanted to get closer to her, all this was happening too fast, she wouldn't even have time to plan what they would talk about. Luckily there was the little boy and they would have to interact with each other one way or another. Something began to ring where the boy was, he took a phone out of his pocket. -Oh! You have a phone, we could call your mom from there. - The little boy nodded, but something stopped him, when he looked at the screen he realized that he had no signal.
-My phone has no signal. - Said the little boy with a disappointed tone. Enid managed to see some faces on the screen, surely they were her little siblings. So she thought he could tell her about them to improve the atmosphere.
-Who are they?- She asked pointing her finger at the screen. The little boy's smile returned to his face.
-They are my siblings, I am the eldest. This is Ali, her real name is Alcina. - Damien pointed to a little blonde girl with blue eyes. Then he showed her a little boy with black hair and blue eyes, he looked a lot like him, but he was a baby. - He is Alphonse and I have 2 more siblings who are not yet born, Erzebeth and Joseph, they are twins and they are still in mommy's tummy. - The boy sounded very animated when talking about his family. It was obvious that they loved each other very much.
-Wow, that's a lot of kids, your parents must have a lot of free time. - Enid joked, after thinking about it for half a second, she retracted her words since the child was too young to understand those jokes.
-Mommy likes big families, she has many siblings too. - Said the little boy giving her a big smile. Enid responded. The girl heard calm footsteps approaching them, she quickly stood up and took the boy by the hand to help lift him off the ground.
-Wednesday! - The blonde yelled, Wednesday looked to the side trying to ignore her, but she kept getting closer to her.
-This is the child you were saying? - said the girl with a dry tone. The little boy's eyes widened, he released Enid's hand and walked over to Wednesday.
-Your name is Wednesday??- Asked the little one, Wednesday felt a little uncomfortable with the boy's proximity, Enid realized this so she brought the little boy closer to her, separating the space between him and the serious girl.
-Wednesday Addams. - He looked at the little boy from head to toe trying to remember his multiple cousins all over the world, but she couldn't recognize this one. Hearing his name, the little boy let go of Enid's grasp and rushed at the girl, trying to hug her. Wednesday was surprised and his body went rigid.
-Mother! - the little one yelled excitedly, neither of the two girls understood what was happening.
- You have a son? - Enid asked surprised, she felt a small pain in her chest at the thought that Wednesday had a child with someone else, she could feel Wednesday's murderous gaze resting on her.
-Make a joke like that again and I'll take care of causing you insomnia for as long as you stay in this academy. - Enid felt the true terror. - Of course not. - Said the girl still unable to get out of the little boy's grip.
-You know what? We better go into the room and talk quietly. There's obviously something weird here. - Enid said taking the boy's hand showing him where the room was. Wednesday followed close behind, but kept his distance.
