Work Text:

It felt like each day spent with her was another day in a fairytale
And emerald never quite believed in fairytales

“So Nora” emerald started, kicking dirt with her feet “you ever been anywhere in vacuo?”

Nora sat up from whatever makeshift skiff she was working on, a new improvement to her hammers jet propulsion system maybe? It almost reminded her of a hover board “no but I have heard stories”

Emerald rolled her eyes, hands on her hips glaring at her “let me guess - fairytales”

“Haha, no, just about team cfvy and sssn scouting the area during our travels back in Anima” Nora was still facing away with her back turned, messing with a wrench in her hands.

Emerald wished she’d turn to look at her, but it wasn’t like Nora’s back wasn’t without view. Scars and scratches dusted her rugged outline, as lightly pink against such sun-tanned skin as Nora’s vibrant aura herself.

Emerald only wished she could be as blazing - but instead she only felt as if her aura was a blade of grass in the sand to be trampled on and stamped down compared to her.

——————

It was only later on that Nora reminded her that emeralds aura wasn’t a blade of grass, nor was it a common weed. It was that of a dandelion, it grows independently- constantly even in the harshest of conditions and the toughest of weathers. It never gives up it always keeps going and holds up the other plants within its reach
“Kind of like what your always doing to me emerald” Nora grabbed her hands. A kindness showed in her eyes

Emerald blushed and turned away rubbing the back of a scruffy green head with her free arm. God there was so much dust in her hair. She needed to wash it later “nonsense, your always doing that for me”

Nora in turn held her hands tighter, “we’ll, if that’s the case, why don’t we make a promise, to keep on holding each other up no matter what”

And in that moment, emerald had never understood
Never believed in fairytales before….
But now she did
She understood perfectly
This girl
This brilliant, pink, neon hearted shining girl that stood infront of her was unlike all the heroes she read about in stories and heard about in the streets
And to emerald
That’s what makes a fairytale
Something unheard of, something unreal, something so true and valuable and loyal like the gem on her emblem
It unlocked something within the green haired girl
Maybe it wasn’t about believing in fairytales or living one
Maybe it was about making a fairytale life for yourself
Grabbing the horse by the reigns and saying “no more”
“This life is mine”
And Nora gave her the strength to do just that
She believed in her
And emerald believed in Nora

They believed in each other

And maybe that’s all you need to get through vacuos greatest storms
