Chapter Text
"Shit!" Audrey yelled as she looked at the watch on her desk. "Get up! Get up!" she told the man sleeping on the other side of her bed. "I'm sure you were great last night but you have to leave now." said Audrey.
"But I thought we had a real connection last night?" said the man.
"Uh huh, no. Get up and leave, will you?" said Audrey.
"I didn't even get your name." said the man.
"Let's keep it that way. Now off to the door because I'm getting paged at the hospital." said Audrey.
"You're a nurse?" asked the man.
"I'm a doctor at St. Bonaventure. That's all I'll tell you" said Audrey, leading him to the door.
"See you around then."
"Nope." said Audrey, closing the door on him before noticing that her phone had been ringing.
"Where are you?" said the other person on the line.
"I'm almost there." said Audrey, trying to wear the clothes she found on her floor.
"Glassman's looking for you. He sounds pissed. You better get here ASAP." said the other person.
"Tell him I'll be there in five minutes." said Audrey.
Audrey ran to the parking lot of her apartment and hurriedly drove her Ducati to St. Bonaventure. It was her second week as a first year resident at the time. She had gotten in because of high praises and recommendations she received from her former professors that the attending surgeon, Dr. Glassman had been keeping an eye on her ever since.
Audrey's apartment was quite far from the hospital that she had to drive faster than her usual speed. She had become very cautious around Glassman, having been told that he could make or break her career.
The night before this, Glassman had yelled at her for a very minor error she made while suturing a patient that she went to get drinks with her friends, eventually having meaningless sex with the stranger that had been hitting on her that entire night.
As she was driving towards the hospital, she was still shaking off the alcohol in her head. She didn't know if what she was doing was even proper as she was just focused on getting to work as early as possible. However, she eventually had to stop her Ducati after seeing a head on collision on her way.
"I'm a doctor. What happened here?" she asked.
"Truck driver was drunk. Crashed right into the CR-V." said the traffic investigator.
Audrey knelt down and checked the truck driver for a pulse. "He's dead." said Audrey before moving on to the driver of the CR-V. "He's still alive. How long til the ambulance arrives?" she asked.
"Five minutes." said the traffic investigator.
"Tell them to rush. I'll keep him alive til then." said Audrey, as she tried to examine the driver for other injuries.
Five minutes later, the ambulance arrived. Audrey rode her Ducati and followed the ambulance to St. Bonaventure.
"Where were you?" asked Nurse Petringa. "You said five minutes!"
"Sorry, I had to stop by this" Audrey explained. "Head on collision, victim is male, around his thirties. He's unconscious. I need an OR prepped for him and page Dr. Glassman."
Glassman strode through the ER without speaking to Audrey but taking in the patient that Audrey brought in.
"You take care of this and call next of kin." said Glassman, handing Audrey the bag of he patient's belongings.
"Oh that was cold." said Petringa.
"At least he talked to me." said Audrey.
"Where did you go last night? You disappeared." said Petringa.
"Made another mistake with the stranger next to me." Audrey explained.
"Whore." Petringa muttered.
"Like you're not." said Audrey.
"Who's that guy you brought in?" asked Petringa.
"I don't know, he was driving the CR-V that was hit by the truck." said Audrey.
"Aren't you supposed to call next of kin?" said Petringa.
"Oh. Yeah." Said Audrey, ruffling through the patient's things. "A wallet."
"Look for a calling card or something."
"Here you go." said Audrey.
Petringa reads the name on the calling card. "Dr. Neil Melendez. Rings a bell" said Petringa, walking to a computer.
"What are you doing in there?" asked Audrey.
"I heard that name last week." said Petringa before confirming her suspicion. "Aha! congrats, you just rescued a fellow resident." she added, showing Audrey the name on her computer.
