Work Text:
Tsuna wasn't sure what woke him up. It might have been a stray beam of sunlight, slipping through the drawn curtains on an errant gust of air... or the warmth of two bodies he was sandwiched between - which, while familiar, was admittedly bordering on stifling. Moving with slow, calculated precision he disentangled his left leg from the others' and (oh, so gently) tossed some of the covers aside. Ah. That was better. With the most immediate crisis resolved, he relaxed back into the mattress and attempted to take inventory.
It was very quiet. A good sign: meant no one else was up yet, which in turn meant there was still some time for him to sleep. That, or everyone had already gone down to the dining hall for breakfast. Which would be... less than good. The last thing Tsuna wanted right now was for Reborn to bust his door down and trash the bedroom in an inevitable confrontation with his guardians. Again.
But that train of thought brought him unpleasantly close to the full waking consciousness station, so Tsuna derailed it and refocused on his surroundings. There was a hand thrown over his shoulder from the front, bent at the elbow to thread gentle fingers in his hair, and another circling his waist from behind; someone breathing quietly against the nape of his neck, and someone else's cheek pressed to the top of his head. He didn't even try to make sense of which leg belonged to whom, but the general picture was easy to discern. The hard line of heat pressed along his back could only be Hibari; in contrast, the lithe, catlike form curled protectively around his front had to be Mukuro. A rare occurrence: they didn't always agree to sleep in the same bed (least of all in such close proximity) and even when they did, they were usually awake by the time Tsuna as much as batted an eyelid. He wished he could use this opportunity to at least look at them, but there was no way he could move now without waking them up. They were both such light sleepers - by nature and nurture respectively - it was a small miracle they were even able to fall asleep like this in the first place. But that was alright. He'd take what he could get.
Yet the significance of the moment only made its potential interruption more worrying, so Tsuna cracked one eye open in hopes of finding some way to tell the time. As it turned out the only thing in his immediate field of vision was Mukuro's collarbone, which by itself said little. He chanced a glance to the side, but the bedroom ceiling was dark as well; with the curtains closed, there wasn't much sunlight getting in. Sighing, he almost surrendered himself to waiting it out in uncertainty, when something fluttered softly by and sat on his ear.
"Hibird!"
"Tsuna!" chirped Hibird, somehow managing to sound conspiratorial. A sudden idea invaded Tsuna's sleepy brain at that thought.
"Can you get me Hibari's watch?" he whispered. Hibird jumped in place, seemingly considering his question... and pecking at his hair.
"Hibari?" he repeated, hopeful. Tsuna hissed under his breath.
"No, you'll wake him up... his watch, Hibird. His watch." He shifted his hands a fraction to tap a finger against his wrist. "The watch he wears on his wrist?"
Hibird seemed to chirp to himself for a moment, but just as Tsuna began to question the sanity of this idea, he spread his tiny wings and flew away. After a few tense seconds, Tsuna heard the flutter of wings again... and then Hibari's watch, dropped from a considerable height, slapped him in the face. His Hyper Intuition flaring up, he barely managed to catch the strap in his teeth before it could slide down his chin and hit Mukuro's chest. He lowered it slowly onto a sliver of empty mattress between them instead. The angle was awkward, so he had to cross his eyes and squint to gleam anything from the watch's face without moving his head, but at last, he managed to establish that the hour was just shy of 5 AM, meaning they had at least three hours to sleep before breakfast.
With that thought (and quite proud of succeeding in his crazy scheme) Tsuna finally felt like he could relax. He settled back into the warmth and yawned, attempting to do it as discreetly as possible... and failing miserably, as Mukuro's hair got into his mouth.
"ACK—”!"
"Tsunayoshi-kun?" predictably alerted by his sputtering, Mukuro shifted and stretched, his hand tightening minutely around Tsuna as though to make sure that he was present. "Is everything alright?" His voice was barely more than a mumble, relaxed in a way that always made Tsuna's heart break a little with the memory of darkness and deep, freezing water.
"Yes, everything's fine. I didn't mean to wake you," he hurried to explain in a whisper. Mukuro only buried his nose in Tsuna's hair in response and hummed with deep thoughtfulness of one barely conscious.
"It's five in the morning," he complained (wait, how did he know? He didn't even open his eyes!) "Go back to sleep."
"I was just planniHIIIIIIII-Hi—”Hibari-san, STOP IT!"
Hibari's teeth withdrew from the nape of Tsuna's neck. "Shut. Up." he enunciated, though it didn't come across quite as harsh as usual, as he soothed the bite he'd just made with a swipe of his tongue. "Or I'll bite you to death."
Tsuna shivered involuntarily when Hibari's breath swept over his wet skin. He recognized the offered opportunity to back out of trouble before it got out of hand, and fully intended to take it. Mukuro should as well, but whether he cared or not was a different matter entirely.
"Yes, how very original, Kyouya-kun," he said in a lazy (though suspiciously less sleepy) drawl. "I regret to say your repertoire of threats is getting a bit stale as of late."
Hibari, for once, did not let himself be goaded. "You cut it out as well," he merely said. "It's three hours too early for your antics." (seriously, how did they BOTH know what time it was?!)
"Oya? Have I discovered a loophole? A magical time of day when I get to do whatever I want, without you hounding me for it like a prison guard?"
"Not a chance."
"Please, you two, that's enough—”" Tsuna began, attempting to turn towards Hibari but only managing to choke on more of Mukuro's hair. "PLEH. UGH."
Hibari huffed. "I thought we agreed you'd braid this chaos before bed." He reached out over Tsuna's head to grab a fistful of the silky blue strands and yanked rather harshly. The sound Mukuro made in response could only be described as obscene, causing Hibari to immediately let go in favor of punching him in the shoulder. "Stop that, you perverted freak."
"How about you make me, Kyoya-kun?"
"Don't provoke me."
"Ah, but it's so much fun~ and you're all bark no bite, so why would I deny myself the pleasure when it comes free of consequence?"
Hibari punched again, a little harder, and Mukuro retaliated by kicking him in the shin. Tsuna had seen this scene play out enough times to know exactly where it was going and he was not looking forward to it ruining his peaceful morning. Despite sleepiness, he could feel his irritation burning hotter by the second.
"Pineapple-haired bastard."
"Stuck-up control freak."
"I could strangle you in your sleep."
"You could try; I wouldn't mind bringing you to your knees again."
"I said ENOUGH." Tsuna's voice rang out with a sudden undercut of steel, slicing through the argument like a blade. His eyes lit up with a spark of flame so brief it might have been imagined. Nevertheless, both of his guardians backed down immediately, familiar enough with the signs to respect the authority they signified.
"As you wish, cariño mío." Mukuro settled back with his cheek against the top of Tsuna's head... though not before gathering all of his long, messy hair and throwing it over his shoulder, where it could harmlessly spill over the side of the bed and onto the floor. He then reached down to tangle his fingers with Tsuna's. "I am yours to command, after all."
No similar declarations of subservience were expected of Hibari, and indeed, none were given; ever reticent, the Cloud guardian simply hummed low in his throat and returned to his previous position with his arm around Tsuna's waist. This time, however, seemingly by coincidence, his palm rested close to the center of Tsuna's chest and did not pull away when Tsuna covered it with his own.
When Tsuna woke up four hours later to the sound of the bedroom door flying off its hinges, he couldn't even find it in himself to mind.
