Chapter Text
Dot sat in the windowsill, the bright light reflecting off her face as she stared at the cold, snow swept landscape of Warnerstock. She was more than small enough to do so, being only four years old going on five. Behind her, her older brother Wakko played with blocks absentmindedly, the background bustle of the orphanage not bothering the young Warner siblings one bit. They were used to it. Yakko was out trying to find them some snacks, some food to fill their bellies besides the awful gruel they were served on a nightly basis.
The Warner sister interrupted her brooding with a sigh. She was at that age where her mind had been filled with fantastic tales of princesses, knights, and dragons. Not like there was much else to think about, anyway.
“I want a knight in shining armor!” She declared, prompting Wakko to look up at her.
“What?” He said, his tongue hanging out, and his hand still clutching his little wooden block.
“I want a knight to come save me.” Dot explained, crossing her arms. “A knight to save me from the orphanage and take me out of Warnerstock forever.”
“Well, I want to be a knight.” Wakko proclaimed, setting his block down and picking up another.
Dot glanced down at him haughtily. “You can’t be a knight.”
“Why not?” Wakko looked back at her, finally making eye contact with his little sister. He looked a little hurt.
“Because you’re my brother!” Dot said, as if that was a perfectly self-evident reason why Wakko couldn’t be a knight. Seeing that he wasn’t following, she explained further. “You’re stinky. And short. And chubby! A knight is big and strong and handsome.” She clasped her hands together, chest fluttering at the idea of her perfect knight.
“I could be a knight…” Wakko retorted, simply, placing the final block on his creation. It was a castle made of blocks. He tore it down before anyone could see.
