Work Text:

"What have we done?" Fyutsuki asked, looking out the window.

Gendo's office had a view on most of the Geofront. It lay in ruins. The walls of the cave were charred, the landscape marked with craters and giant trenches - the results of the titans waging a war. The woods and green meadows which used to make the panoramic view serene were now gone. Though, even if some of them were left they wouldn't be able to survive for long, as the huge arrays of mirrors which redirected sunlight from the wells above were shattered. The dusk reigned in the Geofront, and it would stay like that in the near future.

Yet it wasn't what unsettled the old man. The true reason for it was the bloody remains lying in the center of the mayhem. Limbs and internals of the beings not meant to walk the Earth with the men were all over the place.

"We won. It is the only thing that matters, Professor."

"But at what cost?" thought Fyutsuki, yet didn't ask. They were only kids...

"Your worries are unwarranted. The report Major Katsuragi had delivered indicates that the damage to the defensive grid is within acceptable limits. Units 01 and 02 sustained minimal damage, mostly to the exterior layers. Even deploying Unit-00 held in reserve wasn't necessary."

"But what about the pilots? I don't think the conditions they are subjected to are good for their health. Doctor Akagi raised concern about signs of agitation, mild sleep deprivation, overstimulation of nervous system–"

He was interrupted.

"Their vital signs are within norms and are closely watched. The fate of mankind lies in their hands. It is a necessary price. The method produces results." Gendo smirked. "The second and third children showed all time high sync rates. Their performance in the last battle proved it to be not limited to the test environment."

"Yes, it was horrifyingly effective."

Gendo nodded.

Fyutsuki’s gaze returned to the dawned angel. The memories of how swiftly and violently it was torn apart still lingered in his mind, no matter how hard he tried to push them away.

"The projection is that it is not even the limit. I instructed Katsuragi to proceed further."

"Further? It is not safe at their age."

"The risks can be mitigated. The pilots were provided with protective measures and instructed in their use."

Fyutsuki didn't say anything. He knew there was no point arguing with the Commander when he made his mind. But the feeling that they were making a mistake, unleashing something they would not be able to control floated in his mind.

"What have we done?" Gendo repeated the question asked before.

His eyes fell down to a folder lying on his desk, a report from Section 2 on the pilots in question. A bunch of photos slided from it, the uppermost showing two teenagers engaged in a passionate kiss.

"We have weaponized the horny, professor!"
