Japanese nicknames can be made by simply picking the first few syllables of your first or last name and adding one of these sounds to it:
Chan
Pon
Run (soft r)
Tan
Chi
Pi
The goal of the nickname is to make it sound cute.
For example:
My japanese given name is Kouya ( 倖弥 ), so a nickname for me would be Kouchi or
Koupi
. This can be used with given and surnames. There are other ways to make nicknames but this is the most common and easiest way.

The smell of food flooded my senses as I shuffled out of the hallway. Soft grumbling came from behind me followed by a hand gripping the back of my shirt. I turned my head to the tug while rubbing the sleepiness from my eyes.
The boy behind me yawned, "G'morning."
"Morning Hajichan, Mama woke you up too?"
Hajime nodded his head with a pout across his lips. It was Seven in the morning, earlier than we usually get up at so it wasn't hard to understand why he's moody. We were told yesterday that we'd had guests coming over for breakfast today, Mama had already gotten Hajime and I dressed for the day, she was now setting the table with a wide grin on her face. Her long black hair was up in a bun and she wore a simple purple floral shirt and black leggings. Mama was always pretty, I loved seeing her smile.
"Hey kiddos, the Oikawas' should be here in a few. Want to finish setting the table for me while I go get some other things done?" She crouched down to our level while she spoke. "It would be a huge help!"
I nodded as Hajime yawned out a response, "Sure thing Aunty."
Mama ruffled our hair before walking into the kitchen with a little skip. I smiled at her excitement. Truth be told, I have never been good with new people. I got really nervous and sometimes my tummy started to hurt when I talked to new people, but when I see Mama all happy I feel better about it. Hajime's mama and my mama could be heard laughing in the kitchen while I placed the wooden chopsticks on the table. I looked to my right to the clock hung up on the wall; It was eight in the morning now. I looked towards the window by the door and saw a blue car pull up to the curb near our house. I tugged on Hajime's shirt and pointed to the window.
"What do you think they'll be like Hajichan?"
Hajime turned his body around and looked outside the window with his brows scrunched as he thought for a minute before he shrugged, "Hopefully they're nice?"
"Hopefully," I kept my hand on his shirt and followed him while he finished setting his portion of the table.
Not even a few seconds after he placed the last bowl on the table the doorbell rang. Mama sped walked out of the kitchen with a bright smile, she used her right arm to wave Hajime and I to come by her to welcome our guests. I felt my tummy twist into a knot when Mama reached for the door knob. I quickly stepped behind Hajime, only letting one half of my face peek out from around his shoulder while my hands held the back of his shirt.
"Enachi! Thank you for having us, sorry for intruding," an older woman with long brown hair flung her arms around Mama, the sleeves of her blue sundress swished around.
Mama flung her head back and laughed while she hugged the woman back, "Misutan! Please, no need to be formal with me!"
The two giggle to themselves before pulling back from their hug. The woman stepped to the side revealing three children behind her. Two girls and one boy.
The tallest and oldest looking stepped forward then bowed, her deep brown hair was tied up into a braid that flowed down to the middle of her back. She wore a blue and white striped shirt and jean shorts that had heart stitching on the pockets. She stood up straight and smiled, "Thank you for having us, I'm Oikawa Takako."
Mama's eyebrows raised as she grinned, "Pleasure to meet you kiddo."
The second girl stepped next to her sister with a huge grin, she bowed quickly. Her near black hair was cut into a messy bob and bounced at her every move, her eyes were the same color too. She wore black overall shorts and a hot pink shirt underneath it. "Hi! I'm Tomomi!"
"Hello, Tomomi!" Mama ruffled the girl's hair playfully.
The last child, the only boy, stepped up hesitantly. He bowed and lifted his body up in one quick motion, his brown hair bounced around at his every move. His brown eyes glanced across the room before he smiled, "I'm Tooru, Oikawa Tooru!"
Mama ruffled his hair before Hajime's mama shouted for her from the kitchen. She grabbed the other woman's hand and led her into the kitchen, "You kids talk for a second. Hajime, [Y/N], make sure to introduce yourselves! Breakfast will be ready soon!!"
The Oikawa kids took their shoes off and placed them on the rack by the door. Hajime looked at each of them and then turned his head awkwardly to look at me. I look at him with a pleading look, exaggerating it with a small tug on his shirt. His lips formed into a pout before he rolled his eyes at me.
"I'm Iwaizumi Hajime," he stepped to the side a little to show me to the Oikawas', "This is my cousin, Sasaki [Y/N]."
Tomomi gleefully clapped her hands together, "Oh that's such a pretty name!"
"I'm Twelve. Tomomi is Nine and Tooru is Seven. How old are you two?" Takako gestured to us as she asked her question.
"I'm Seven, They're Five."
"I'm five and a half Hajichan!"
“Still Five— OW!” He stepped away from me rubbing the arm I pinched with a pout, “Why did you pinch me you jerk!”
Takako rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms while Tooru and Tomomi covered their mouths in a failed attempt to hide their snickering. Takako’s lips twitched upward hearing her siblings strained giggles, she quickly turned slightly to her right and covered her mouth with her hand too. I saw Hajime’s pout turn into a grin and I started to run to the living room.
“Get back here! I need my revenge!!”
“Nooooo! Have mercy Hajichaaaan!”
The Oikawa kids followed behind us giggling at my cousin and I’s antics. Hajime got me from behind and picked me up before spinning us both in a circle. We bursted out in giggles as he set me back down. We grabbed each other's arms as we struggled to stand up straight from dizziness. I leaned backwards and plopped down on the floor. Tomomi was jumping up and down while clapping her hands happily, Tooru and Hajime were using their hands to hide their mouths as they laughed, and Takako was smiling while shaking her head.
Tomomi was the first to recover from the giggle fit, she quickly started another conversation, “What do you guys like to do? I like running a lot!”
Hajime sat down next to me before speaking, “I like Volleyball! My papa used to play when he was younger, sometimes we go to the park and he teaches me how to play.”
“No way! I like Volleyball too!!” Tooru automatically sat down on the floor, looking at Hajime with a bright smile.
“I like singing,” Takako nodded in my direction as she pulled Tomomi down to the floor with her, “What about you?”
I blink a few times before shrugging my shoulders, “I like reading and Volleyball I guess?”
Tomomi scrunched her face up and groaned, “Reading is so gross thooough!”
“What books do you read?” Tooru tilted his head with curiosity in his eyes.
Hajime snorted, “She always steals my books. I read grade two books too.”
Takako’s smile turned into a shocked expression, “Aren’t you in kindergarten though?”
I just shrug. Hajime has taught me everything he learned ever since he started school. When he was in kindergarten and I wasn’t old enough to go to school he’d come home and tell me what he learned. Even now he still does, it’s our quality time together honestly. My favorite subject he’s shown me is Language. Sometimes when he forgets how to write something I have to help him.
Tomomi leaned forward, “Woooah!”
“That is so cool!” Tooru looked at me with a sparkle in his eyes.
I gave them a timid smile and looked down with embarrassment. I didn’t know how to handle this kind of attention so I just shrugged. Then Tooru and Hajime started talking about all the things they knew about volleyball now while Takako fixed her sister's hair. I tugged the long green sleeve of my shirt to cover my palms as I held it up to my face, I always found comfort when I did that. I looked up towards the kitchen and saw Mama and the two other mama’s talking while moving around the kitchen. I got up off the floor and went to the kitchen, I shuffled my feet at the entrance.
“Mama, can I help?”
My mama turned to me, setting a spoon down with a soft smile. She crouched down to the floor and used her hands to motion for me to come to her. I waddled towards her and she placed a hand on my shoulder and booped my nose. I giggled at her actions, her smile brightened at that.
“What do ya want to do honey?” She pointed to a big pot on the stove that Hajime’s mama was stirring and then the cutting board that the Oikawa kids mama was at. “Stir or cut?”
I look between the choices and decide to help my aunt, “Stir!”
Mama pulled up a step stool to the left of my aunt and helped me get on it and handed me the spoon she set down earlier. My aunt pinched my right cheek between two of her fingers, “Hey there stinker!”
I giggled, “Hi Auntie!”
Mama Oikawa held her hand over her heart and cooed at me, “Oh my lord! You are so sweet!”
“Yep, they're my sweet child. Aren’t ya kiddo?” Mama asked while squeezing me into a side hug.
I nod with a huge smile while stirring the miso soup. The three women giggle at my nodding while getting back to work. Mama and mama Oikawa were talking about “the old days” with my aunt pitching in from time to time. I was happy to be there, I loved seeing their smiles. Smiles mean they were happy, so if they're happy I’m happy. Mama would come to my side occasionally adding things to the soup for me to stir in. My aunt and mama Oikawa were working on other dishes, they worked fast. It took about fifteen minutes for breakfast to be ready to serve.
My aunt walked into the dining room with a pot and called out to the other kids, “Wash up!”
The three adults carried the breakfast to the table as I skittered to where the other kids were at. Everyone washed their hands and hurried to the table. Tomomi and Hajime were at the table first, when I got to the bathroom door Takako was leaving it. I look into the bathroom and see Tooru scrubbing his hands. He was smiling and nodding his head side to side, his brown hair bounced with the movement. He looks up at the mirror and sees me in the reflection and he smiles even more. He turned to the side and dried his hands before skipping out the bathroom. He stopped a few steps out the doorway and opened his mouth to say something but closed it again. He rushed into the dinning room, leaving me alone in the bathroom. I tilted my head at his weird exit and rushed to the table too. I climbed into my seat right next to Mama.
“Waaah! The food looks so good!” Tooru eagerly eyed the different dishes, Tomomi nodding in agreement.
“The food does look amazing, thank you!” Takako tilted her head in a makeshift bow as she spoke.
Hajime looked at his mama, “Thank you! It looks really good!”
The three adults look at each other and smile. My aunt ruffled Hajime’s hair, “Glad ya like it kiddo!”
Everyone cheered thanks for the food before digging in. Takako grabbed grilled salmon with her Tamago Kake Gohan. Tomomi dove straight for Natto and Miso soup. Tooru and Hajime grabbed some of everything. I just grabbed some salmon and plain rice with a bit of Tsukemono, Tooru looked at my plate with a confused face. He opened his mouth but then closed it to glare at Takako who kicked his leg under the table. He grumbled something under his breath before stuffing his face as quickly as possible. Next to him Hajime was doing the same.
My aunt shook her head, “Hajime slow down, you’re going to choke.”
“I ont oke!” He spoke with his mouth full.
Tooru’s mama said the same thing and he simply said, “O I ont!”
Then they both started coughing. Takako rolled her eyes and patted her brother on the back while Tomomi held back a laugh. My aunt pat Hajime’s back while scolding him. Mama and mama Oikawa both chuckled at the two boys but also threw in some scolding into the mix.
Today will definitely be an adventure.
