Work Text:

“Are you going to be too busy this day?”

Nate paused for a minute, remembering what Adam had said before they left the Warehouse. “Maybe not that busy? If I remember correctly, there are just some meetings that Adam and I have to attend.”

The couple were walking along the street going towards the station, having just had their breakfast from the bakery. Quincy’s arm was hooked on Nate’s own, preferring this than having Nate slung his shoulder across hers. She hates that position whenever she walks with Nate. It makes her feel like an armrest or a child. Being 5’0 has a lot of disadvantages but Quincy’s not going to let that ruin the only quality time they’ve had for a month.

They decided to walk instead of using the car, preferring to enjoy the warmth of the early summer, listening to the drone of the people around going on about their own lives. The town seems peaceful despite the kidnapping that happened at the edge of the town. The threat of imminent danger not yet settling over Wayhaven.

As the two rounded up the corner near the police station, Quincy turned around to face Nate. “You know, you don’t have to walk me all the way to my office, right? It’s not like those Trappers would risk it during broad daylight.”

The tall supernatural gave her a gentle smile, reaching to place his hand over her cheek. Quincy immediately leaned and pressed her face to his warmth, enjoying the feel of his soft hand on her face. “I know that, but I want to do this for you. I wish to always make the best out of our time together, be it only walking you towards your work.”

Heat immediately creeped up on the Detective’s cheeks, unable to even speak a single word in reply. She’s always like this whenever Nate says or does sweet things for her. He always manages to reduce her to a bumbling mess. She still can’t believe that someone like him chose someone like her as his partner. As she continued looking at Nate, an awestruck wonder came over her. Opening her mouth to speak, she was immediately cut-off by the most unwelcome voice she can think off.

“Ah, there you are, angel. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Bobby.

It’s all she can do to stop herself from snapping at him, the warmth on her face disappearing as Nate withdrew his hand.

Fighting off the grimace from showing on her face, she forced herself to smile as best as she could. “Bobby, how can I help you?” She asked, as genuinely as she could despite the person in front of her. The last time she saw Bobby was at the carnival when he unexpectedly thanked her for saving his life, the kiss that happened in her apartment not even mentioned. And although it was unwanted, it was still a bitter memory on her as she knows that Bobby might use it against her sooner or later.

So she took it upon herself to be honest about it as best as she could. She told Nate about the kiss, before she even accepted his proposition to start a relationship with him. She wanted to be honest to him about everything, even with things that she’s afraid to share. A perspective that she hopes he will share with her soon.

“I’m here to ask about the details about the kidnapping,” Bobby started saying, although his eyes was fixed on the supernatural behind Quincy. “Although maybe it’s best if we talk about it in the privacy of your office?” His voice filled with double meaning that the Detective chose to ignore.

Sighing deeply, she turned around to face Nate, who was locked in a stare-off with Bobby. “Hey,” she said, trying to get his attention away from the reporter. When Nate finally looked at her again, she continued. “I should go inside, and I think you should go back to the Warehouse.” Quincy stood on her tiptoes to whisper to her boyfriend. Thankfully, Nate leaned down to make it easier for her. “Go. Before he starts asking you questions about the Agency.”

The tall supernatural looked at her with questioning eyes, asking if she’s really sure, the memory of the unwanted kiss that happened both on their minds.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me. I’ll be inside the station. If he tries anything, I’ll have him thrown in jail.” The Detective joked, trying to ease Nate’s worries.

Deciding that there’s no arguing with her, Nate released a huff of breath. “If he tries anything, anything at all, just call me, okay?

“I thought you don’t like using your phone?” Quincy said with a teasing smile.

Nate pressed a light kiss on her forehead before answering. “For you, I’ll do anything.”

“Detective Miracle?” Bobby interrupted the budding moment between the couple. “Can we get this over with?”

“Go. I’ll see you later,” the Detective insisted, squeezing Nate’s arm before moving a step away from him.

Nate nodded, but before leaving, he did something that Quincy never expected from his always-gentle partner. He stood on his full height and sent a look towards Bobby that even Adam would be so proud of. Nate didn’t even say anything, just looked at Bobby with that serious face but it conveyed so much that Bobby unexpectedly took a few steps back. Apparently satisfied with the result, Nate looked at Quincy again but it’s a stark contrast to his threatening aura just a few seconds ago. All she felt is his warmth and affection when he looked at her. With that, Nate sent a gentle smile her way before walking back towards the Warehouse, leaving Quincy in equal states of comfort and confusion.

Notes:

this is suprisingly kinda canon? lmao idk but some of the dialogue here was on book 3 considering i wrote this just after the bakery scene from the demo came out ... (if i'm remembering it correctly)
