Knock knock.

“Come in.” Niles Caulder’s voice called out to whoever wanted to enter his room.

Someone came in and walked around to Niles’ back to hug him from behind. Someone Niles had not seen in months. Not in this form, at least.

Niles held their cheek as they nuzzled their head into the side of his beard. “It’s good to see you, Oscar.” He said. They didn’t respond, they just took in the warmth of their partner.

Whenever Oscar was human, it was because they were longing. Longing for something, which is what Niles figured they came right to him for. He was right, as per usual.

“Anything in particular you need, my little Kiss?” Niles wondered. He used a nickname he had made for them, one in which he associated his beloved with his favorite sweet treat: Hershey's chocolate. Oscar represented everything sweet in the world to him, and he wanted to do whatever he could for his sweet.

“...You.” They mumbled, placing a series of sluggish but sincere kisses onto his cheeks. Niles couldn’t help but smile at their affection. “I’m all yours.” He responded.

“Niles?” Oscar asked. They let go of him and slithered back to the front of him, sitting down on the ground and resting their chin on his legs in between his knees. “Yes?” He answered. Oscar hesitated to ask their question. “Do you get tired of me being sad all the time?”

“Wha- of course not, my love.” He was taken a bit aback by the question, but that didn’t show on his face. “I’ll never get tired of you or anything about you.” He pet the top of their head. “Even if I wasn’t your partner, you still deserve the world, regardless of your emotional state.”

A smile began to tug at the corner of Oscar’s lips. “Here, bunny.” Niles motioned with his hand for them to get closer to him. They obliged and rested their arms on his legs, leaning their head in closer. Niles held both of their cheeks and leaned down, placing a meaningful kiss on their forehead.

He kept a hold on their cheeks after the kiss was broken. They looked into each other’s eyes. “I love you, Oscar.” He said. Oscar grabbed one of Niles’ hands and peeled it from their face. They turned it over and placed a kiss on the back of his hand. “I love you too, Niles.” They closed their eyes and said “Thank you.” “Of course.” Niles responded, petting their partner’s cheek with his one hand that lingered on it.

They had a moment of comforting silence together, but it didn’t take long for Niles to break it. “So, what would you like?” “Hm?” Oscar was confused. “C’mon, I know there’s an idea in there somewhere of something that sounds like fun.” Niles smiled. As much as Oscar loved the kind words and the physical affection, he wanted to cheer them up even further.

“Mmmm…” Oscar thought about it. They knew that whatever they said, Niles would be on board for. Their ideas of fun were never bold or dangerous, which is why Niles always agreed with them. “I know I’ve got a coloring book with our names on it…” They finally let out a full smile.

“Bring it in!” Niles said, already beginning the search for his trusty giant box of crayons. The pair had a colorful afternoon ahead of them.
