No matter how long he’d been away, coming back to Yu-Topia always felt like coming home. From the moment he stepped off the train into Minako’s waiting hug, everything felt so… comforting. Even Minako’s teasing about insisting that he be polite and shake hands and sign autographs felt familiar and comforting to Yuuri these days.
Part of that was that he’d built up his own self-confidence enough to believe that he had earned the admiration from the people of his hometown. The Olympic and Worlds medals, both as a competitor and a coach, were hard to argue with. None of his world records were still his, but no one could take them out of the record books. He had things he could point to for why he was being treated like a champion.
A bigger part was that even with the people of Hasetsu, who didn’t much care about skating in general, he had his husbands to share the admiration. They may not remember Viktor much for his own skating achievements, but they knew him well as Yuuri’s coach and husband and inspiration. Kenjirou was even more admired. He may not be from Hasetsu, but he was from Fukuoka and had chosen to make Hasetsu his home even before falling in love properly with Yuuri. He had medals and records of his own as a competitor, and although he had chosen to go into writing instead of staying with coaching, his outgoing personality and sense of fun had kept him quite popular with the skating press with his connection to the Katsuki-Nikiforov team.
At the inn itself, his parents and sister were waiting to hear all about the exciting season and their plans for next season, and to share the local gossip that Yuuri had missed out on. There was katsudon for everyone except the dogs, and dog-safe treats for the two poodles. Watching their youngest child have his mother’s katsudon for the first time was a special treat, even when Viktor made a joke about hoping the kid didn’t take after Yuuri in the gaining-weight-easily department as well or they’d have to put restrictions on the food of the gods again. In retirement, Yuuri’s body had settled at a somewhat higher weight than was acceptable for competitive skating, but as Viktor and Kenjirou both seemed to appreciate him a great deal, Yuuri had learned to take a “who cares?” attitude about it.
As if sensing those thoughts, once the kids were in bed and the three adults had gone out to the hot springs for a soak, Viktor and Kenjirou both sat right next to him in the water, gently running their hands over Yuuri’s belly. “If Akihiro does take after you, well, we know how to handle it, and if he doesn’t or it doesn’t matter for what he wants to do with his life, then there’s nothing to handle,” Viktor said.
“We love you just as you are, and even your doctor agrees that you’re probably healthier at your current weight than you would be if you kept pushing to be in competitive weight,” Kenjirou agreed. “There’s definitely worse things our kids could pick up from us than a love of katsudon and a tendency to gain weight easily!”
“Like my depression, or Kenjirou’s trouble focusing,” Viktor agreed. “At least with weight gain, we know the appropriate treatment of stricter diet and exercise regimens.”
“Katsudon certainly seemed to help your depression,” Yuuri teased. “Getting you some proper eros in your life seems to have turned it around.”
